3 . Coach your favourite sports to poor children in schools. Help these children to get a structured sporting education and see their joy as they pick up new skills. If that's not enough sport for you, you can even get involved in playing with local teams in your evenings and weekends.
Description
As a volunteer sports coach, you and your group will head to 3 schools each day to coach your chosen sport or a variety of them. Sports coaching volunteering involves not just teaching the kids, but also acting as a good role model. Children are aged about 10-13 and are often new to playing sport in a structured environment. You don't need to be a top player to take part (though any champions are welcome!) —it's your advanced personality and drive that will make the biggest effects.
Which sports can I coach?
Sports coaching volunteers can choose to specialize in coaching just one sport, but often we find that it is best to combine several sports for more variety. The freedom to choose between different sports makes the weeks even more diverse. Follow the links to find out about each sport.
Accommodation
•The accommodation is located in a leafy suburb 10 minutes' drive from the city centre and sea front.
•Sports volunteers share accommodation with childcare and teaching volunteers.
Food
All dietary requirements can be catered for, as long as we know about them in advance. Coaching children in sport will make you hungry—many volunteers choose to supplement their meals with snacks bought in the local shops, just 10 minutes' walk away. There is a volunteer kitchen where participants can do any cooking they wish outside of mealtimes.

Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He ’d hiked the park near his home in Southern California many times. But after exploring along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.
As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. The place was remote and rough. With no flashlight, only a liter of water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone,
Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour hike he ’d planned. Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The picture showed his legs surrounded by an endless landscape of rocks and plants.
All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the wind was blowing violently. Not wearing too much, the hiker was shaking with cold. He hugged himself into a tight ball, using his backpack to protect his legs from the cold wind. But he wouldn’t sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a bear, he spent the night awake, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.
The rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they posted the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location.
Ben, a worker in a tech industry, who has an unusual hobby of exploring where photos are ta ken, happened to see the photo. So he immediately pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. Based on the information that Compean’s car was parked near Buckhorn Campground, he narrowed his search to the surrounding area.

9 . If you’ve ever travelled with other people, the chances are you’ve had to make compromises. When you want to get up early to watch the sunrise, for example, your friends may argue that getting enough sleep is more important. And when you want to try the different food, your friends might say it looks strange and push you to a Chinese restaurant instead.
This is probably why more people these days are choosing to travel alone.According to reports on holiday habits from the Association of British Travel Agents, the percentage of people in the UK who take trips alone has been increasing, from 6 percent in 2011, to 12 percent in 2017, and to 15 percent in 2018.Most of these people said they choose to travel alone because this allows them to “do what they want”.
In fact, travelling alone is only a part of a recent trend(趋势) of people wanting to take more time alone — or what’s called “me time”.“Imagine yourself as a full pot of water and everything else that asks for your attention is an empty glass. When you provide what is needed for them you are using up your own water supply,” editor Nicole Lyons wrote for the mental health social network Psych Central.“But how are you refilling your pot? This is where your ‘me time’ comes in.”
However, it’s still quite a common belief that those who do things alone are losers and they’re alone simply because they don’t have anybody to be with. But why can’t people just be enough for themselves?
The now Duchess of Sussex “Rachel Meghan Markle” once wrote on her blog in 2016 about how she enjoyed taking herself out to dinner and travelling alone.“It’s not easy. But it’s important, ”she wrote. You should face everything and encourage yourself to move forward when the feeling of loneliness and boredom sweeps through your body and mind, according to Markle.
1. What does the underlined phrase “make compromises” mean?A.Turn up. | B.Work hard. | C.Give in. | D.Take care. |
A.To save more money. | B.To enjoy their freedom. |
C.To calm themselves down. | D.To avoid troubling someone. |
A.To show the way of challenging yourself. |
B.To tell the importance of travelling alone. |
C.To prove the necessity of the sense of loneliness. |
D.To introduce the advantage of travelling. |
A.Me time:enjoy yourself alone | B.A new way of travelling abroad |
C.Travelling alone: a better way to relax | D.A standard of finding a partner in trips |
An Unforgettable Thanksgiving Day
“Mom, is it okay if I invite a few of the classmates for Thanksgiving?” asked my son Evan. Evan had been senior high school students for two years. The school he attends is a challenging school and is strict with students but Evan did well and he had changed a lot. We were very grateful that our son had learned not only to tidy up, but to shine everything. Most importantly, he became more outgoing.
But with all the strict rules and hard work, the students there were also forming lifelong friendships. It was a practice that those unable to go home for the holidays would find a welcoming place at the table in the home of any of their friends. We’d hosted Evan’s roommates last year and looked forward to meeting new guests this Thanksgiving.
“Oh, one thing, Mom,” Evan continued. “These guys are exchange students. They would be Tim from Thailand, Kanok and Patrick from Mexico and Costel from Canada. They couldn’t eat their traditional dishes at school. So you’d better cook some special dishes for them. I know you are good at cuisine(烹饪). ”
Indeed, I did delicious dishes and I was very excited about the international dishes we’d have at our dinner table. What dishes would I cook for these special visitors? They’d probably love a traditional turkey. But ... what are their traditional dishes? I love to cook, so this was an excuse to take out my wide variety of cook books, to do a little research on the favorite foods of these three faraway lands.
I decided to roast a turkey, and found several traditional dishes of Mexico and Canada. The only traditional dish of Thailand I thought I could have a try was something called foufou. I told Evan about it, who checked in with his friend Tim. “Tim is crazy about foufou, Mom! You have to make it! Tim also said he could help you if you needed. ”
So Turkey Day morning found me busy in the kitchen. The last dish I cooked was foufou. I followed the steps to prepare foufou and finally placed it on the stove(火炉)to cook for ten minutes.

At this time, I heard Evan’s excited voice, so I went out of the kitchen.
