1 . It was a busy morning and I had several things to do before the day became too hot to be outside the house. As I was walking by the side of a busy road, I saw an old lady, maybe in her 80s, standing dangerously close to the traffic. Although my mind was preoccupied, I thought to myself that I should warn her not to stand so close to the busy traffic rushing by. When I reached the spot where the old lady was standing, I noticed that she was trying to get attention of passers-by who of course were too busy to take note of her.
She kept pointing to the middle of the road. When I tried to gently move her back further away from the edge of the busy road, she said that she was standing there because she dropped her house key in the middle of the road and was unable to enter her house without the key. I looked around and no one seemed to be interested in the two of us. I knew I was getting delayed but decided to help.
The traffic was busy on the road with people on two-wheelers or in cars as well as school buses rushing with school children. It was the worst time of the day to cross a busy road without a traffic light. I asked the old lady to stay at a safe distance, took a deep breath, and carefully stepped onto the road waving my hands crazily, fearing to be hit by an oncoming vehicle. At first one lane (车道) stopped and then I moved further on to the middle of the road continuing to wave my hands.
I quickly picked up the key and ran back to the old lady waiting by the side of the road and returned the key to her. As I turned to continue my hurried walk, the old lady pulled me by my hand and gave me a big warm hug. I felt so happy to have helped this old lady.

4 . On 17 September 2023, Senior 1 student Charlie Robson was enjoying his dinner at the stand when there came a sudden scream from the boy next to his table, who accidentally swallowed the plastic wrapper stuck to the bottom of his food.
Seeing him unable to cough it up, the boy’s mother was immediately filled with fear as she stood there, patting his son’s back anxiously. “Somebody help! My son is going to choke with the wrapper in his throat.”
Charlie noticed that the boy’s face had turned complete purple. He knew he must take action immediately. Otherwise, the boy’s life was in great danger. Charlie quickly ran behind the boy and started doing the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) whose theory is to push air through the airway to force whatever is in there out. Minutes later, the plastic wrapper was eventually forced out and the boy began to breathe again.
Seeing the boy was safe, Charlie rushed to the school without knowing his act of kindness went viral after someone in the scene posted the video on Tik Tok. Charlie’s father said, “I’m so proud of my son. He is a brave boy with great responsibility. He didn’t tell me what had happened until I saw the video on Tik Tok.”
Plus, the boy’s mother wrote to the headmaster, saying “The student who saved my son’s life the other day is really a hero. We’re so grateful that he stepped in to help when my son was faced with such a dangerous situation. Thanks so much for educating such well-rounded students with good moral virtues.” In response to the letter, Jimmy Mehwish, the headmaster of the school, said, “At the very beginning of the semester, Charlie has set a great example for all the students. 5 . What is China? China is very diverse. It not only has skyscrapers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, but also has vast rural fields and the rural society. In September 2017, we started a social enterprise, Beyond the City, which connects urban and rural areas: hoping to help urban children expand their rural horizons and help rural children learn more about career possibilities.
We created the Rural Filed Study Project and brought 1000 children from more than 30 cities to the Tibetan area of Ganzi plateau, the terraces of the Red River in Yunnan, as well as the ancient hunting tribe of Aoluguya. Instead of traveling of teaching as volunteers, we lived in the locals’ homes and took courses in social research, opera performances, architectural design, etc.
Also, we initiated the City Career Planning Project and brought more than 100 rural children from deep within the mountains of Liangshan to Shanghai to study courses about career planning and development. so as to help them to understand all walks of life and get to know a real city life. We try our best to help them avoid the fate of dropping out when they still have the chance to choose.
Additionally, we established the Career Connection Workshop, attempting to bring quality education and career courses in first-tier cities to children in towns and small cities, connecting textbook knowledge with future careers and offline classes with online resources. Evolving from this platform, we are now embarking on the path to launch the Digital Skills Exchange Workshops within the next two years.
Beyond the City is committed to build mutual trust and connection between urban and rural areas, addressing inequalities and laying the foundations for a more equal world.
