1 . Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form   of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
A New Hero is Here to Save the Day

It’s thought that when a hero like Batman is blessed with great power, he or she must endure loneliness and suffering as a result. The Flash(闪电侠), however, makes a fun, lightning-quick and optimistic superhero. After the wild success of TV series Arrow, a TV network launched The Flash,     1     (show) the image of this Superhero, who was only a supporting character in Arrow.

Like Spiderman, who gained the ability to make webs and climb walls after he     2     (bite)     by     a     spider, Barry Allen in The Flash was shocked into superhero-status by accident. A strike from a lightning put Allen into a nine-month unconscious state, and when he emerged, he found himself     3     (equip) with super speed.

Naturally,   Allen   slips   on   a colorful   suit   and   becomes   the   Flash,   a hero     4     extreme speed to fight super-powered bad guys. But the Flash also has other purposes, namely finding out the truth behind his mother’s death and his father’s unjust imprisonment.

In line with superhero series standards, The Flash features action and eye-popping special effects. There’s nothing terribly innovative here, but     5     we do get is a unique superhero   with   a   more   unusual personality.     6     Allen has gone through unpleasant childhood experience, in this show he grows into a superhero     7     powers include optimism. He’s got a group of scientists that not only save his life, but also provide him with emotional support and the tools necessary     8     (fight) crime.

A big surprise for me was that The Flash cast Prison Break star Wentworth Miller as a bad character, who uses a gun that     9     turn anything into ice. US shows began their entrance into the Chinese market with Friends, but Prison Break pushed interest in US TV series to a new height largely thanks to Miller’s wonderful acting. Now Miller’s back to act in The Flash.     10     is a nice surprise that this new show serves as a platform for Prison Break fans to revisit their old favorite, although this time around he’s an antagonist(反派角色).

5 . After walking miles of expo hall carpeting, watching countless live demos, and sitting through God knows how many press announcements, we’re ready to declare these ten products to be the best things we saw at CES (国际消费电子展) 2017. Of all the amazing and beautiful gadgets on display here in Las Vegas, these are the products which exhibit the strong sense of innovation and vision within their categories. They achieve this through exquisite industrial design, innovative engineering, and simply seeing the future and realizing it in a product you can touch and hold. The following are three of the ten.

CES is full of toys that promise to turn your kid into a coding wiz (编码奇才). The issue? Not all of them are fun to play with. This week Lego introduced Boost, a new kit that lets kids bring their existing bricks to life with three different modules. You can program Lego to walk, roll, flash, and make noise via an app that uses drag and drop code. Kids probably won’t notice they’re building logic skills when they program their hot (自动程序;网上机器人) to shoot a dart at their sister when she walks by, and that’s the point. It’s a sneaky way to get kids to learn, which is exactly why they’ll love it.

The Hub robot is adorable, but LG’s animated voice assistant also provides a clear peak at the future of in-home interfaces. These devices run Alexa, but they do more than your average Echo. A screen on the front doesn’t just surface visual info like weather forecast, it provides personality: blinking eyes patiently await your commands. Ask for your favorite tunes, and the little robot busts a move as it plays them. You can customize the wake word to anything you’d like, and the big and mini versions of the robots have the exact same features. The only difference is the size of the screen and the power of their built-in speakers.

Good speakers are furniture. They add to a room’s decor, and they begged to be touched. The cylindrical Beoplay M5 is a wireless speaker that fits those criteria—its wool covering is soft and gorgeous, and it’s topped by an aluminum disc that functions as a satisfyingly tactile volume knob. The sound is excellent, with impressive volume and gobs of bass. Audio streams in over Bluetooth. AirPlay, or Spotify, and it has Chromecast built in, so you can command the jams by talking to your Google Home. It’s not a portable speaker (it plugs into the wall and has no battery) but is made for multi-room setups—-group a few M5s together, or pair them with other Beoplay multi-room speakers like the A6 and A9.

1. Which of the following describes the common traits of these products?
A.They represent the edge-cutting industrial design.
B.They are all for entertainment and recreation.
C.They are targeted at young people.
D.They are available on the market now.
2. What does the writer mean by saying “Good speakers are furniture”?
A.Because they fit well in criteria.
B.Because they plug into the wall without battery and make up for multi-room setups.
C.Because they fit in with the decoration of the room and feel comfortable.
D.Because they have excellent sound, impressive volume and gobs of bass.
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.It is painstaking to select the top ten gadgets among so many ingenious inventions.
B.Beoplay M5 features wonderful looking, excellent sound quality and portability.
C.The screen on the Hub robot provides visible information and personality.
D.The new Lego kit Boost motivates kids to learn programming without their realization.

6 . University Shotokan Karate Club

Learn Karate—self-defense and fitness

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY

Hardly any of us have experienced real violence, but, over the last few years, attacks on innocent people have increased. Each of us has some ability to defend ourselves, and by learning a form of self-defence, we are not only increasing that ability, but also doing something to build our own sense of respect. Karate will show you a lot of simple and effective techniques to protect yourself, giving you increase self-confidence.

Far too many people think martial arts (武术) are about violence. Martial arts training is based on a lot of respect, self-discipline, self-control and non-violence. We learn basic etiquette, courtesy and tolerance. Good manners and consideration for others are expected at all times.

Karate is the practice of blocking and striking techniques for the purpose of self-defence, health and self-development. Karate exercises the entire body. Techniques are practised on both sides of the body, therefore muscle imbalances do not occur and the strength, coordination, flexibility and agility of both sides of the body are improved. Regular training in Karate improves the body’s physical endurance and flexibility. It also helps concentration and produces the mental calm and assurance that come from knowing we can defend ourselves.

Karate has many benefits but they do not come easily or overnight. Training requires ongoing commitment and hard work. Some of you will give up, but a few of you will get your black belt.

A.tell readers the benefits of Karate

A.More men than women have been its members.

7 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

For many well-educated travelers, buying a copy of Lonely Planet is the first task before taking a vacation abroad. Founded in 1973, Lonely Planet is the biggest guidebook series in many countries. It’s published in 11 languages including Chinese.

But when the BBC confirmed on March 19 that it had sold the entire Lonely Planet series to a US billionaire at a significant deficit(赤字), many commented that the deal sang the swan song for the printed guidebook.

The rise of the Internet and the prevalence of smartphones have become a burden on the print media. Why would travelers bring a heavy guidebook when they can download the apps to their smartphone in an instant? Furthermore, alternative and free travel content is readily available on the Internet, from Wikivoyage to TripAdvisor which provide excellent guidance on your trips.

But the Internet is not the only reason that guidebooks are in decline. It is also widely accepted that the physical guidebook has such complete content that can kill any sense of personal exploration. With the guide books, all those backpacker feet ended up following routine trade routes, and in those routes was little room for initiative.

It’s also pointed out that the guidebook is not exactly good for tourism. Often the shops and restaurants that thrived on a recommendation in the guidebook relaxed and discovered that it didn’t matter: the legions of eager travelers keep on coming anyway.   They gradually become uncompetitive.

And yet, despite the rise of new media, it’s believed there is still a place for printed guidebooks, at least for the time being as books still offer readers the kind of feeling that virtual tools can’t provide, more of a compelling, touchable interaction.

8 . Once again DC Comics and Warner Bros. have divided fans and critics over their latest superhero film.

There had been worrying news about Justice League in the months before its release, with a lot of reshoots of scenes, a new director being brought in to finish the film after original director Zack Snyder’s tragic loss of his daughter and, of course, a lot of talk about Ben Affleck’s future in the role of Batman.

Some people are saying that Justice League is another big disappointment, that it could have been incredible and instead fails to really entertain. Others say that Warner Bros. have finally got it right and that the future for the League looks bright.

My opinion lies somewhere in the middle. The film was by no means a disappointment: it was exciting, funny and a lot of fun to watch. There’s something special about watching the heroes from your childhood brought to life on the big screen and maybe that is affecting my opinion.

However, I will say that a lot of work needs to be done if the producer wants to make a great success. Although the film was good, it was obvious which scenes had been reshot and how the characters had been changed. I also have to mention the several scenes in which the special effects were very badly done; these are the kinds of problems that you don’t expect to see in a film with such a big budget.

Another point to add is that it is good to see the producer making Superman slightly a brighter character and adding some jokes to the plot to keep things fun. But the producer must be careful not to make the mistake that another film producer—here, not mentioning the name—is coming very close to doing: turning all of the films into bright and colorful shows and losing a lot of seriously good stories.

In the end, Justice League is not a perfect film but it is definitely not a terrible one. A lot of work is still to be done but I hope that DC does not completely lose its darker side.

1. Before the release of Justice League, many people showed their ______.
A.pity for the director, Zack SnyderB.concern about the film’s quality
C.higher expectation of the new directorD.support for the actor, Ben Affleck
2. According to the author, what’s special about Justice League?
A.It advocates social justice.B.It brings lots of fun to the audience.
C.It has some brave heroes.D.It brings back childhood memories.
3. In Paragraph 5 the author mainly wants to express his ______.
A.views on the film’s weaknessB.advice to the film’s director
C.love for the filmD.expectation of the film’s sequels
4. The author mentioned another film producer to ______.
A.stress the importance of fun in a film
B.show Justice League’s lack of a serious plot
C.serve as a warning to the producer of Justice League
D.set an example for the producer of Justice League

9 . When considering housing options at the University of Waterloo in Canada, Nigerian undergraduate student Ayooluwa Solaja chose a Living Learning Community, a residential house focused on a theme or academic interest area. Solaja lived on campus with 10 to 1s other students in the Arts and Business LLC.

Three reasons may account for the prospective international stadents willingness

to consider LLCS.

1. Connect with like-minded students: Prospective international students can choose an LLC to fully experience college life in a new country and find immediate support among residents: Unlike other housing arrangements, LLCS can provide a built-in community of like-minded individuals

Solaja says a highlight of her experience in the LLC was"forming relationships with upper-year students in my program. This peer leader provided her with everything from academic support to guidance on how to survive Canadian winters. Many LLCS have upper-division students who serve as peer leaders.

Australian Natasha Fitzpatrick says she's happy to share her love for travel and cultural exploration. "A group of us hired a car and traveled down to North Carolina sightseeing.”

2. Participate in community activities: For those worried about being on the outside as a new international student, LLCS encourage participation through various on-and off-campus activities. For example, students in a fashion LLC have attended Toronto Fashion week

Through LLCS, international students will have more opportunities to interact with domestic students, faculty and staff members outside classrooms,"says Shijuan Laurel Liu, assistant professor of Chinese and a partner with the Global Awareness LLC. In a Chinese New Year celebration associated with the LLC, for instance, students from her language and culture courses worked with Chinese students to introduce Chinese culture to the community

Solaja says coming from a different education system in Nigeria with sometimes unapproachable professors, she enjoyed LLC on-campus events like when she played board games with Waterloo professors and academic advisers.

3. Network for job opportunities: International students who plan to gain work experience in the country they study in can benefit from LLCS that are associated with campus departments and staff. This can provide them with chances to network and inquire about work opportunities.

Liu says when Chinese tutoring positions and graduate assistantships became available, she thought of international students from the Global Awareness LLC who previously helped her organize events. She also wrote reference letters for those students when they applied to graduate school.

Robert C. Demezzo, director of residence life at Southern Connecticut State University, says LLCS "help many international students secure employment on campus.

Solaja says her year living in Waterloo's Arts and Business LLC was one of her best decisions." You get what you put into the program," she says.

1. What impressed Solaja most in the LLC?
A.A group of students in the LLC rented a car to travel together
B.She got a reference letter when she applied to graduate school.
C.The peer leaders shared their experience both in study and daily life
D.They celebrate the Chinese New Year together with an assistant professor
2. Who are more likely to get Job opportunities?
A.Students who have participated in more on-campus events.
B.Students with better language skills especially in Chinese.
C.Students who have global awareness and interest in network.
D.Students with more working experience through LLCs.
3. Which of the following statements is FALSE?
A.Various activities help international students get oriented to the new life
B.Individuals with similar minds will have the same career prospect.
C.Each LLC focuses on a particular theme or academic interest area,
D.LLCS Provide opportunities of communicating with domestic students
4. Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the passage?
A.The teachers in Nigeria seldom participate in off-campus activities
B.Many overseas students are not accustomed to the winter in Canada
C.The campus staff offer international students some academic support.
D.LLCS help many international students find jobs after graduation

The world might seem focused on urbanization, but over the past five years of our Housing Futures research, we have seen the emergence of a new trend in housing the desire to move back to rural locations.

With advancements in technology, villages are now more connected than ever. Our Housing Futures research, focusing on The Village Revival, identified that 21% of respondents expressed a desire to move to a village, making it probably the most popular location for buyers.
