3 . Many people stereotype(对……刻板印象)the college years as four years’ worth of partying. But that’s not true! Many students use their time to create things. Here are some of their amazingly smart inventions.

A Fire Extinguisher That Uses Sound

Created by Seth Robertson and Viet Tran, engineering students at George Mason University, this sonic fire extinguisher uses low-frequency sound waves to put out fire. At just the right frequency — between 30 and 60Hz,the movement of sound waves creates a vacuum (真空), cutting off the fire’s oxygen supply.

A Marker That Tells You When to Apply Sunscreen How many of you have gone to the beach and forgotten to reapply sunscreen? Two University of Waterloo students—Rachel Pautler and Derek Jouppi—invented Suncayr, a marker that tells you when it’s time to reapply your sunscreen. The ink turns color in the presence of UV light, so when you find a purple mark on your skin, you know it’s time to reapply it.

A Device That Turns a Flat Surface into a Computer

Thanks to Pranav Mistry and Liyan Chang, students at MIT, you may be able to wear a computer in the future. They developed a device called SixthSense. You keep a smartphone in your pocket and wear a little camera/projector around your neck. The smartphone and camera/projector work as a team to sense your finger movements, process information, and project information onto a surface—be it a wall, a table, or the palm of your hand.

A Universal Tape Dispenser

Ever find yourself with a roll of tape in your teeth, using your mouth to tear a piece while attempting not to break a tooth? Cooper Union students Deanna Kovalein and Jessica Marshall created a device called Snip It that fits any tape roll and cuts any type of tape. With the push of a button, the tape gets pressed against the sharp edge, which cuts it.

1. Who developed a special invention designed to put out flames?
A.Seth Robertson and Viet Tran.
B.Rachel Pautler and Derek Jouppi.
C.Pranav Mistry and Liyan Chang.
D.Deanna Kovalcin and Jessica Marshall.
2. We can infer that people might check emails displayed on a building by means of ______.
A.The fire extinguisher.B.Suncayr.
C.SixthSense.D.Snip It.
3. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To show the fixed images of college students in people’s eyes.
B.To demonstrate inventions that college students created.
C.To motivate college students to come up with innovations.
D.To introduce inventions that make a difference to college students.

Carole Lindstrom, illustrated (加插图) by Michaela Goade

Water is life! The Water Protectors at Standing Rock and beyond have been battling to defend Mother Earth’s sacred water to honor our ancestors, to provide for our peoples and for future generations. All Because You Matter

7 . Of the many safety measures that Disney Parks had to set up to operate during the Covid-19 pandemic, requiring guests to keep a six-foot distance from the costumed characters must have been one of the hardest.

For kids or kids at heart, running into the waiting arms of Mickey Mouse and other beloved characters had been such a fascinating and essential part of the experience, which makes hanging back terribly tough.

But finally, hugs are back on the horizon at US Disney sites.

As early as April 18, “Disney will start reintroducing traditional character greetings at Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World Resorts, as well as aboard Disney Cruise Line and at Aulani Resort in Hawaii,” according to a new post on the official Disney Parks blog. Getting autographs, shooting photos close up and sharing a laugh face-to-face with characters such as Mulan, Goofy, and Donald Duck will all be back on the table.

“During the past two years, we’ve taken a very gradual, intentional approach to health and safety protocols,” wrote Shawn Slater, senior communications manager for Disney Live Entertainment, in the blog. “Recent trends and guidance have provided opportunities for us to bring back some of our most beloved magic, like character greetings and dining experiences. While not all locations will be available immediately, we anticipate reopening in stages throughout the spring and early summer.”

It’s not just character interactions that will be returning later this spring. At Disneyland in California, guests can look forward to the return of several nighttime spectaculars, including fireworks and Main Street Parade.

However, Disney still isn’t 100% back in some ways. Take face masks, for instance. Disney asks that visitors who are not fully vaccinated (接种疫苗) continue wearing face masks in all indoor locations. You can click here for their latest safety updates.

A.Taking pictures next to Donald Duck.
B.Having face-to-face conversations with Mulan.

10 . Canyoning

The sports of canyoning (蹦谷) explore the high-energy environment where water meets rock on the coast. Protected by wetsuits and helmets, people jump from cliffs and waterfalls and discover caves that would not normally be arrived at.

It was first done in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people jump from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16).

Diving

Diving is not popular with British people. The difficulties of wild waters are greater because the water is colder and not clear enough, but the coasts of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland have some of the best diving in the world.

The British Sub Aqua Club (0870 112 9133, www.bsac.com) and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (01580 819688, www.padi.com) run courses teaching the important skills.

Surfing

The best surfing places in the UK are on the southwest coast where it is warmer, especially in Cornwall. The best time of year to surf in the UK is late summer and autumn.

The British Surfing Association (01479 861256, www.britsurf.co.uk) has a list of famous surf schools around the country.

Rock climbing

The most popular natural rocks in Britain include the Peak District, the Lake District, while large areas of Scotland are a climber’s ideal place. Climbing courses and climbing walls can be found on the website of the British Mountaineering Council (0870 010 4878, www.thebmc.co.uk).
