7 . Low-cost Gifts for Mother’s Day

Gift No. 1

Offer to be your mother’s health friend. Promise to be there for all doctor’s visits whether she has a disease or needs a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say there is no need, but another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor’s visit. The best part? This one is free.

Gift No. 2

Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what time she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother’s life,” Dr. Marie Savard said.

Gift No. 3

Enough sleep is connected with general health conditions. “Buy your mother cotton sheets and comfortable pillows to encourage better sleep,” Savard said. “We know that good sleep is very important to our health.”

Gift No. 4

Some gift companies such as Presents for Purpose allow you to pay it forward this Mother’s Day by picking gifts, 10 percent of whose price you pay goes to a charity (慈善机构). 8 . Everyone wants to be a pop star. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pop star.    1    You get to sing and dance and make voices. People are willing to pay you tons of money and, of course, many fans love you. It’s a perfect life; what could be the problems?
2    And one of the biggest problems is “crazy” fans who live their idols (偶像) too much. Andy Lau, the Hong Kang superstar, experienced that last year. A fan was so crazy about Andy that she persuaded her parents to spend all their money and travel to Hong Kang to meet him. Andy is a nice man so he met the girl and talked with her for a few minutes.
That should have been the end of the story, but it wasn’t!    3    In despair (绝望), the father jumped into the sea and said it was because Andy Lau had made him poor and had made his daughter a “crazy” fan. It’s a very sad story and it shows what can happen when ordinary people become crazy pop fans.
We like famous persons, and we enjoy listening to them.    4     And some people think that, since they love the pop star, the pop star should love then back. That’s crazy!    5    They have their own families and friends. Their job is to entertain us, not to love us. So, don’t be a “crazy” fan, be a good fan, and just appreciate the joy, the happiness and the excitement that your favorite pop star bring you.
A.Well, clearly, there are lots of problems.
B.Sometimes we think we know them as well as we know our closest friends.
C.It seems like the coolest job in the world.
D.The family had spent all their money to meet Andy and they had no money to return home.
E.They hated the superstar.
F.Pop stars have their own personal lives.
G.In fact, there is no difficulty in becoming a pop star.

9 . 阅读理解。
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Dear friends,
The recent success of children’s books has made the general public aware that there’s a huge market out there.
And there’s a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of children’s books bought each year… plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers. Who are these needed writers? They’re ordinary people like you and me.
But am I good enough?
I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I didn’t know where to turn for help.
Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing ability, and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed.
The promise that paid off
The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability: you will complete at least one manuscript (手稿) suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course.
I really didn’t expect any publication(出版) before I finished the course, but that happened. I sold three stories. And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute. Since graduation, I have written 34 nationally published children’s books and over 300 stories and articles.
Free test and brochure
We offer a free ability test and will send you a copy of our brochure describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training.
Realize your writing dream today. There’s nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it disappears forever.
Sincerely,
Kristi Hill
Institute of Children’s Literature
