TUESDAY AND THURSDAY
6.00—8.00 p.m.
WEAVER HOUSE GYM
FIRST LESSON FREE
Hardly any of us have experienced real violence, but, over the last few years, attacks on innocent people have increased. Each of us has some ability to defend ourselves, and by learning a form of self-defence, we are not only increasing that ability, but also doing something to build our own sense of respect. Karate will show you a lot of simple and effective techniques to protect yourself, giving you increase self-confidence.
Far too many people think martial arts (武术) are about violence. Martial arts training is based on a lot of respect, self-discipline, self-control and non-violence. We learn basic etiquette, courtesy and tolerance. Good manners and consideration for others are expected at all times.
Karate is the practice of blocking and striking techniques for the purpose of self-defence, health and self-development. Karate exercises the entire body. Techniques are practised on both sides of the body, therefore muscle imbalances do not occur and the strength, coordination, flexibility and agility of both sides of the body are improved. Regular training in Karate improves the body’s physical endurance and flexibility. It also helps concentration and produces the mental calm and assurance that come from knowing we can defend ourselves.
Karate has many benefits but they do not come easily or overnight. Training requires ongoing commitment and hard work. Some of you will give up, but a few of you will get your black belt.

3 . With its subtle(微妙的)rules on tipping and not-so-subtle rules about carrying ID,Las Vegas is better enjoyed after a little research. This smart booklet will save you the bother.
Tipping Las Vegas runs on tips. You should hand a dollar bill to the waiting staff who get you a drink, and the doorman who whistles you up a taxi.Taxi drivers and restaurant waiting staff should get 15%-20%(most bills do not include service charge);tour guides $5-$10;and you're oven expected to leave S2-S5 a day at the end of your hotel stay for the housekeeping staff you may never actually meet. On the plus side, the customer service in Las Vegas is second to none:if you tip well for a round of drinks in a club, for instance, a good waiter will later pick you out of the crowd and pour your drinks while you're still sitting in the fourth row. | Getting around The airport is close to the centre. You can catch a shuttle to the major hotels for$11-$15,or get a quicker taxi for about $25.(Walking on the Strip is fun for people-watching, with elevated pedestrian walkways.A monorail runs from the MGM Grand to SLS with stops at: Bally's and Paris;the Flamingo; Harrah's and The LINQ;Las Vegas Convention Center and Westgate Vegas. A double-decker bus called the Deuce also runs all the way up the Strip to Fremont Street in the Downtown area. |
Areas When you think of Las Vegas, you're thinking of the Strip:a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard, about four miles long, packed with hotels and casinos(娱乐场所)that extends from the Mandalay Bay hotel in the south to the SLS hotel in the north. There are two skyscraper hotels a little to the east,Palms and the Rio,and some smaller.cheaper ones to the west. The other great area for the visitor is Downtown.four miles north of the central Strip.Don't think you've seen Las Vegas without visiting it. | Health Especially in summer, make sure you stay well hydrated(含水的).All casinos and hotels are air-conditioned,sometimes heavily:consider carrying a jumper or jacket even during the summer. In the case of a medical emergency, call 911 or ask your hotel doorman for assistance. |
Other essentials Carry ID with proof of age (passport or driving licence) if you are going to a club;it will be checked no matter how old you! appear. |

Cultural Breaks by Brian Aldiss Reviewed by Paul Kincaid Brian Aldiss is an amazing and frustrating writer. When he is on song, his style is forceful, disturbing and delectable. But he is a restless writer. He came into his own in the enthusiastic and experimental atmosphere of the New Wave, and he has been driven to try the new and the different ever since. That he is still experimenting now, 50years after his first appearance, is a measure of a man who has never been prepared to settle back on his laurels. | ![]() |
The Secrets of Jin-Shei by Alma Alexander Reviewed by Donna McMahon With so many fantasy novels using European-derived settings and mythology, ancient China makes a refreshing change. The landscape is tempting and yet familiar enough to feel very real, and the author uses magic sparingly, in ways appropriate to her society. This and the complex detail put into the backdrop makes the novel feel very much like historical fiction. | ![]() |

Something Different with Franklin Cox, What’s On Around the City Looking for something a bit “different” this week, visit Phyllis Radelifme’s new exhibit - My Environment - at the Century Arts Center. Ms. Radcliffe has a unique way of viewing the things around her! I must admit that I didn’t really understand some of her works. For example, “Flowers” didn’t really seem to have any flowers in it, and I didn’t see any cars in her “Traffic Jam.” But her use of color is truly amazing. If you’re looking for a way to expand your horzons, go take a look.
Weekend Hopping with Gillian Madsen, Northeastern News Last Sunday I went to see a new modem art exhibit by a young woman named Phyllis Radcliffe at the Century Arts Center. The whole gallery was filled with bizarre paintings and sculptures with names like “Flowers” and “Houses”, but I didn’t see anything that resembled any of those objects at all Instead. I saw a bunch of things that looked like my 8-year-old granddaughter brings home from art class at school! I don’t know anything about modern art, but I do know that staying at home and watching an old movie on video would have been a lot easier on my brain.
![]() | New Discoveries with Sylvia Whitcombe, Modern Art Lowers’ Digest I am delighted to recommend Phyllis Radcliffe’s new exhibit My Environment, now showing at the Century Arts Center. Ms. Radcliffe has evolved as an artist since her first show three years ago. Her use of color and form is breathtaking and her style shows a real passion for everyday thing in her life. While this exhibit may not be for everyone, I’m certain that many of you will find it both interesting and inspiring. |

9 . Want to explore new cultures, meet new people and do something worthwhile at the same time? You can do all the three with Global Development Association(GDA). Whatever stage of life you’re at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you’ll create positive changes in a poor and remote community(社区).
We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17-24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25-75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programmes. We have such roles as project managers, mountain leaders, and communication officers.
Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community’s access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.
Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you’ll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who’ll become your lifelong friends.
This summer we have both 4-week and 7-week programmes:
Country | Schedule | |
4-week programmes | 7-week programmes
Algeria | 5 Jul. — 1 Aug. | 20 Jun. — 7 Aug. |

Kenya | 20 Jul. — 16 Aug. | 18 Jun. — 5 Aug. |

There is no other chance like a GDA programme. Join us as a volunteer manager to develop your own skills while bringing benefits to the communities.
