文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了杭州西溪国家湿地公园的相关内容。

1 . The Hangzhou Xixi National Wetland Park in East China’s Zhejiang Province, founded in 2005, is the country’s first national wetland park. Situated in the western part of Hangzhou, Xixi is only 5 kilometers away from the West Lake, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site in the city.

Water is the soul of Xixi. With an area of 11.5 square kilometers, the park is mostly covered by streams, ponds, lakes and swamps, with six long rivers forming a tangled network of waterways. Nearly 70 percent of the park is water and the length of waterways inside the park surpasses 100 kilometers.

Additionally, about 85 percent of the land in Xixi is covered by plants such as reeds(芦苇), willows and persimmon (柿子) trees and a variety of wildlife living among them, making Xixi a great platform for animal and bird watching, scientific research and education.

Because of its abundant water resources and species, Xixi Wetland is an important part of Hangzhou’s ecosystem and helps purify water, relieve flooding, regulate the climate and maintain biodiversity. Nestled in an urban area of the city, it is called “the natural purifier of Hangzhou”.

As well as providing a place for people to enjoy the region’s natural charm, Xixi Wetland is also a cultural treasure which has been described and extolled by scholars throughout history.

Xixi was a land of beauty and a place of seclusion(隐居) in the eyes of ancient people. Inspired by the elegance of Xixi, many literati(文人)—including Su Dongpo, Tang Bohu, Dong Qichang and Yu Dafu —created numerous literary works about the place. Some of them are showcased on the inscribed boards and tablets dotted throughout the wetland park.

The Xixi Wetland was not quite so well-known to people until the famous Chinese film director Feng Xiaogang used it as a backdrop for part of his 2008 film If You Are the One, adding the wetland to the list of must-visit tourist attractions in Hangzhou.

Today, the pristine(未开发的) scenery, the rustic (淳朴的) charm of a country lifestyle and the ancient traditions of Xixi attract tourists from around the world.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,介绍了格陵兰岛的一个主要冰川曾经是地球上萎缩最快的冰川之一,现在又在增长,这种现象只是暂时的。

3 . New research has found that a major Greenland glacier (冰川) that was once one of the fastest shrinking (缩小) glaciers on earth is now growing again.

Scientists from the American space agency NASA recently reported their findings about the Jakobshavn glacier. Because over the past 20 years, it has been the single largest source of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet, researchers have been observing Jakobshavn for many years to help forecast world sea level rise.

NASA says that the water temperatures in areas around the glacier are currently colder than at any time since the mid-1980s. “At first we didn’t believe it,” said Ala Khazendar, a glacier scientist, helped lead the study. “We figured that the temperature would just keep going on as it had over the last 20 years.”

Jason Box is an ice and climate scientist. He told the Associated Press the new discovery about Jakobshavn was surprising because it had been moving in the other direction for so long. Box said, “The good news is that it’s a reminder that it’s not necessarily going that fast.” “But it is going,” he added.

A statement by NASA confirmed that, even with Jakobshavn’s new growth, it is still adding to global sea level rise. Scientists said this is because the glacier continues to lose more ice to the ocean than it gains from snowfall. The sea level rise is just happening at a slower rate.

Researchers involved in the study as well as other scientists believe Jakobshavn is experiencing only short-term changes. They mainly believe this because the cold water affecting the glacier was set in motion by a climate system called the North Atlantic Oscillation, which causes a natural temporary cooling and warming of different parts of the ocean.

The latest research clearly shows that Jakobshavn “is getting a temporary break” from a long-held climate pattern, where the world’s oceans are increasingly warming.

1. Why have scientists been observing Jakobshavn glacier during the past 20 years?
A.Because it is the only glacier in Greenland.
B.Because it is the single largest source of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet.
C.Because the temperature of water around it is colder than that of other areas.
D.Because it makes sea levels around the world rise faster.
2. What does the discovery mean, according to Jason Box?
A.The global sea level is very likely to stop rising.
B.The shrinking of the glacier will slow down a bit.
C.The glacier loss will keep going at the same speed.
D.The change happening to this glacier will last for a long time.
3. Which of the following is NOT indicated in Paragraphs 5-6?
A.The glacier doesn’t gain as much ice as it has lost.
B.The temperature of the ocean is going down.
C.The situation regarding the world’s sea level is still not positive.
D.The growth of the glacier is due to a climate system.
4. What is this passage mainly about?
A.A glacier was found growing temporarily.B.The sea level is increasingly rising.
C.A new climate system was found.D.The world’s oceans are possibly getting cooler.

5 . Liverpool, my hometown, is a unique city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage Site.

I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist, Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of seabirds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid sigs of Liverpool’s history.

As if to stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has the best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No. 1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, making the city a place of wonder.

As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub. It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.

Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of “outstanding universal value”. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.

1. Which part of Liverpool would deeply impress first-time visitors?
A.Its charming river banks.B.Its famous museums.
C.Its attractive buildings.D.Its wonderful palaces.
2. How is the third paragraph developed?

C.By making comparisons.D.By stressing its importance.
3. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the Philharmonic pub?
A.To indicate the end of his trip.B.To expect perfect service.
C.To show more attraction.D.To recommend a break from the trip.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The universal value of the world heritage in Liverpool.
B.The special cultural atmosphere of Liverpool.
C.The exciting change of the author’s hometown.
D.The promising tourism in the author’s hometown.

7 . If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places associated with ancient art and culture and historical buildings. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL). These include remains of ancient cultures like Cuzco in Peru or the rock city of Petra in Jordan as well as old city centers such as Rome in Italy. Also common are places of artistic or cultural significance, like the Stonehenge stone circle in England. But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let’s look at a few of the more unusual sites on the WHL and why it is important to preserve them.

Citadel of Haiti

These monuments were built at the end of the 19th century when Haiti became independent and the many thousands of black slaves in Haiti were free for the first time. These ex-slaves built the monuments, which the WHL describes as “a universal symbol of liberty”.

Borders of France and Spain

This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations.

But it is also an area of small farms. The WHL has listed the site because it shows us about past European society through its landscape of villages, farms, fields, up land pastures and mountain roads.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

This railway in India was opened in 1881 and is still operating today. It crosses a difficult area of mountain landscape and it is a great example of railway engineering. The WHL says that it is “the first, and still the most outstanding, example of a hill passenger railway.”

The city of Brasilia

Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it “a land mark in the history of town planning”. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time so that they would harmonize with each other.

1. What’s the function of the examples of World Heritage Sites in paragraph 1?
A.To highlight the importance of WHL.
B.To exemplify sites of artistic and cultural value.

9 . Scientists have searched for many years for a method to tell whether a volcano(火山)explosion will be small or large. Now, four scientists say they have discovered something in lava(熔岩)that will help do this. They did the research on Mount Unzen on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.

Mount Unzen exploded in November, 1990. Since then, more explosions have killed 43 people and destroyed the homes of more than 2,000 others. The volcano is still active today.

The scientists say the lava of the volcano contains high level of an element(成份),which is a sign of the presence of the lava from deep in the earth, not from the surface. They say it shows that the lava coming directly from inside the earth is connected with huge explosions instead of smaller ones.

The scientists examined the lava from 18 explosions of Mount Unzen that took place during many thousands of years. They also studied the lava from other volcanoes in the area that are older than Mount Unzen. The lava studied came from both large and small explosions.
