6 . Today, we visit one of the most famous parks — Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. This huge park in the southeastern part of the state covers more than 10 thousand square kilometers of the Alaskan wilderness. It includes mountains, glaciers, fjords (峡湾), and even rain forests. Glacier Bay supports hundreds of kinds of animals, including many species of birds, fish, bears, whales and sea lions.
As its name suggests much of Glacier Bay is covered by glaciers. A glacier is a large area of ice that moves slowly down a slope or valley, or over a wide area of land. Glaciers cover a large area of the park.
The glaciers found in the park today are what remain from an ice development known as the Little Ice Age. That period began about 4,000 years ago. During the Little Ice Age, the cold weather caused the ice to grow and develop. That growth continued until the 1700s, when the climate began to warm. The hotter temperatures caused the ice to start melting (融化). That melting led the huge glacier to divide into more than 1,000 different glaciers.
The extremely tall mountains seen in Glacier Bay were formed by the ice developing and then melting over time. The melting of the ice also created water that filled in and created the many fjords within the park. Fjords are narrow parts of the ocean that sit between cliffs or mountains.
Glacier Bay is a popular place for people searching for adventure. Some visitors choose to explore the park by kayak. The small, narrow boats offer visitors a chance to experience the park’s many fjords and its hundreds of kilometers of coastline.

8 . A couple of weeks ago my parents came to visit me in the southwest of France during my break. As a little surprise for them I planned a trip to a small village in the Pyrenees Mountains called Niaux to seethe famous “Grotte de Niaux”. My dad told me so many stories about the famous “grottes” of Southern France: Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume and the Cave of Niaux. These caves contain paintings drawn between17,000 and 11,000 years ago! Advances in science and technology have enabled scientists and historians to date the paintings accurately by carbon dating (碳定年法)and discover the tools with which people used to draw the paintings, as well as the materials they used. My dad studied these caves when he was a college student, but he didn't have the chance to see one personally. Therefore, I decided to change it!
Many caves that contain prehistoric paintings are no longer accessible to the public. The carbon dioxide that we breathe out and the harsh artificial lights quickly degrade the quality of the paintings, and for many caves, now visitors can only see reconstructions of the original paintings. However, Niaux is an exception. By limiting the number of people allowed in the cave at a time and limiting the artificial lights used to light the paintings, the paintings in Niaux have been well protected so that visitors can see the originals. They were unbelievable! We saw paintings of bison(北美野牛),mountain goats and deer carved on the walls as though they had been done yesterday. They were actually drawn around14,000 years ago!
Many people believe that these paintings were drawn as part of an almost religious ritual(仪式),while others believe they represent the life experiences of the men and women who lived in these caves many years ago. Maybe we will never know for sure why the paintings were drawn, but one thing is for certain - those cavemen were far better at drawing than I am!
1. Why did the author's father tell him many stories about the “grottes”?A.The author asked him to do so. |
B.It was his father's duty. |
C.His father was interested in them. |
D.They weren't known to the author. |
A.Shadows. | B.Copies. |
C.Models. | D.Introductions. |
A.Good protection. | B.Great skill. |
C.Good quality. | D.Dark light. |
A.this was the second time that the author' s father had visited Niaux. |
B.visitors don't know the material used to draw the pictures in Niaux. |
C.only the carbon dioxide people breathe out degraded the quality of the paintings. |
D.visitors don't know clearly why the paintings were drawn. |
9 . No one can believe that the over 6 300-kilometer long Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.
The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2 000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty(221 BC~206 BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.
Few local people knew the 3-meter-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human.
The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corral(畜栏) and pigsties(猪圈). Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people’s names are put away as remembrance. Rubbish is spread over the battlements(城垛). The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Great Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but dug out the entire base.
It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation’s great civilization(文明)and learn to love it.
1. The main reason for which the Great Wall can be called “great” is_________.A.it is made by brick | B.it is very wide |
C.it is very long | D.it has a long |
A.It is useless from now on. |
B.It will be replaced by a new one. |
C.Some parts of it are being destroyed. |
D.It’s too old to be used again. |
A.that are too difficult to understand |
B.nobody can watch |
C.that are too far to been seen |
D.that are not well known to the public |
A.The local people are short of culture knowledge. |
B.The local people need bricks and stones to build houses. |
C.The local people think that the Great Wall is not important. |
D.The local people are against the government. |
