4 . Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites, we need to save them in 3-D digital libraries. Across 163 different countries, 1,000 natural and cultural historic places make up our most precious human heritage, which UNESCO calls World Heritage Sites.

We lose a little of that heritage every day. War, climate change and pollution have a bad effect, as do wind and rain. The $4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered at approaching risk of being lost forever. Now there’s a better choice. New digital-conservation technologies let us hold on to them, at least virtually(虚拟的), through 3-D scanning, modeling and digital storage. Such projects can be accomplished through cooperation between governments, universities, industry and non-profit organizations.

To make a 3-D model, a laser(激光) scanner bounces light off an object and records the results. To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping(重叠的) images from all possible angles. A computer then sews them together into one large surface image and draws lines from one point to another to create a wire-frame model. High-resolution digital cameras add color and texture. When fully put together, the models can be viewed, printed or operated.

These scans do more than preserve a memory in a database. With highly accurate measurements, archaeologists(考古学家) can find hidden passages or reveal ancient engineering tricks. School kids can explore places they might otherwise never see. And when a site is destroyed, the scans can even be used to reconstruct what was there. That has already happened for one World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda. Built of wood in 1882, they were destroyed by fire in 2010 and rebuilt in 2014, based in large part on 3-D models made in 2009. More than 100 World Heritage Sites have been already preserved as 3-D models, and conservationists are racing to record as many more as possible.

1. How does the author show the necessity for 3-D digital libraries in the first two paragraphs?
A.By listing the threats to our human heritage.
B.By introducing some damaged historical sites.
C.By quoting some experts’ views on heritage protection.
D.By explaining UNESCO’s research on World Heritage Sites.
2. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The function of a laser scanner.B.The reflection of light off an object.
C.The process of making a 3-D model.D.The development of 3-D digital technology.
3. What do we know about the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda?
A.It is metal-framed.B.It is still in its original condition.
C.It was once destroyed in an earthquake.D.It was reconstructed thanks to 3-D models.
4. What does the author intend to say through this text?
A.Never ignore the destructive power of war.
B.Take action to reduce pollution in historic places.
C.Take advantage of 3-D technology to keep history.
D.Invest more money to preserve World Heritage Sites.

6 . Examples of effective conservation of places matter to the world. They range from the 1960s Nubian campaign to safeguard Ancient Egyptian monuments from the waters of the Aswan Dam to the removal in 2018 of the Belize Barrier Reef from the List of World Heritage in Danger. Conservation is the core purpose of the World Heritage Convention and it may also be its biggest challenge.

The following example shows how successes at specific sites now serve as models for conservation and sustainable (可持续性) development. A year after Vienna was included on the World Heritage List in 2001, the World Heritage Committee (WHC) expressed concerns about the architectural solutions and height of four planned towers of the Wien-Mitte project. This development project, close to the Historic Centre of Vienna in the site’s buffer zone, the one that lies between two or more other areas, affected the urban scale (规模) and visual effects in and around the property (地产). As a result of the Committee’s concerns, Vienna changed its building codes and launched a new design competition for the Wien-Mitte project to work out architectural plans with reduced size in keeping with World Heritage protection.

The successful practice inspired the government of the city to invite over 600 experts and professionals from 55 countries to an international conference on World Heritage and contemporary architecture, held in Vienna in May 2005. The global discussion that followed, detailing an approach to managing conservation and development, was recorded in the UNESCO Recommendation in 2011.

The Recommendation put forwards an all-rounded and combined approach to balancing urban heritage (遗产) conservation and economic development, arguing that active protection and management of urban heritage supports the goal of sustainable development.

The Recommendation supports the harmonious combination of contemporary involvement into the historic urban framework while holding on to values linked to history, memory and the environment.

1. Why does the author mention the Belize Barrier Reef in Paragraph 1?
A.To explain the goal of the organization.
B.To encourage the public to protect the world.
C.To show the positive effect of conservation.
D.To remind people of the environmental problems.
2. Why was WHC worried about the Wien-Mitte project?
A.It took up too much public land of the city.
B.It had a bad effect on the Historic Centre of Vienna.
C.Its original designs were not environmentally friendly.
D.Its architectural solutions couldn’t meet safety standards.
3. What did the global discussion focus on?
A.The ways to combine conservation and development.
B.The creation of the new UNESCO Recommendation.
C.The international urban management and development.
D.The styles of the contemporary architecture of Vienna.
4. What is the authors purpose in writing the text?
A.To examine the challenges faced by global urban planners.
B.To introduce alternative ways of protecting the environment.
C.To stress the importance of the value of history and memory.
D.To promote active conservation and sustainable development.

It is Mother’s Day today. Though it’s a western festival, it’s popular in China now.

Mom has a full-time job, so she has to do most of the houseworks. She is a great mother. Both Dad or I planned to do something on Mother’s Day. We get up early in the morning. Dad cleaned the house, and then went on shopping. When he came back, I found a bunch of flowers in her hand. I asked Mom to stay in the sitting room and I cooked in kitchen. The dishes what I cooked were Mom’s favoritest. At dinner, we said to her, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mom was grateful and moving.

9 . In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. However, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world.

The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman from Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.

“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”

“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.”

His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.

1. Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana?
A.They seldom   follow the French law.
B.They often ignore the Cuianese   law.
C.They are separated   the modern world.
D.They are both Cuianese and French citizens.
2. Gin introduced the special world of the indigenous Guiana     as       .
A.a tour guideB.a geographer
C.a film directorD.a photographer
3. What is Gin's attitude towards the lives of indigenous Guianese?
A.Cautious.B.Doubtful.
C.UninterestedD.Apprecitive.
4. What       does the underlined        word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The modera Frrnch       lifestyle.B.The self-supporting hunting.
C.The uncivilized world.D.The French Republic.
