4 . With a new year come new opportunities, and there’s no time like the present to start learning more about parts of the world you’ve never dreamed of before. Forget the standard bucket list: Machu Picchu, Mt Everest, Galapagos Islands—these places are over-visited. And besides, why follow the beaten path when you can get off it?
Black Sands in Central America
Lush green forests, amazing surf breaks, and village ruins greet visitors to El Salvador. Compared to the popular Costa Rica, the country’s coastline is a surf-enthusiast’s dream. If you’d rather be under the water than gliding along it, then grab the chance to dive in a live volcano. Lake Ilopango sits 460 meters above sea level, near the capital of San Salvador. Freshwater sponges, along with freshwater fish, lava flows along underwater cliffs and pillow lava deposits are just some of the incredible sites. Thanks to the hot vents in the lake bed the water is a balmy 85F.
Rainbow Mountains in China
Hike the multicolor peaks in Zhangye, Gansu Province, which is also home to hidden caves, rock formation, and temples balanced precariously on cliff faces. The otherworldly colors look just like a painted rainbow and give Peru’s much-visited mountains of the same name a run for their money.
Untouched Paradise in Oceania
Made up of 10 islands, two large and eight smaller ones, there are very few tourists who make it all the way to Samoa. Packed with natural wonders: ocean trenches, epic waterfalls, and stunning beaches, it’s a must do for outdoor enthusiasts. There’s ample hiking too, from World War II heritage trails to a “cloud rainforest” hike and a trek up to the peak of Mount Alava.
Red Crabs in Australia
Technically an external territory of Australia, Christmas Island is dominated by around 50 million red crabs. Head to this remote island to witness the stunning spectacle of their annual migration, plus keep an eye out for manta rays, dolphins, and whale sharks that patrol the 80km of coastline. It’s not an easy place to get to, but the near-deserted beaches and friendly community make it worth the adventure.

Boracay is a tiny island and its main attraction is“White Beach”, a perfect postcard white sand beach surrounded by palm trees, dive shops, bars and restaurants. Our favourite seat to enjoy the sunset is“Diniwid Beach”located to the north of White Beach. After the perfect sunset, choose a bar to enjoy live music and party all night long.
Santorini,GreeceSantorini offers a unique landscape of beaches in exotic(异国的)colors of black, red, and

8 . Last year before Christmas, I had a 7-day paid leave and I decided to go on an overnight stay to a nearby fancy hotel Airbnb. I was drawn to the beautiful views and distance from the hustle and bustle (喧嚣) of the city. After I arrived, I was shocked to know that my room had no WiFi or even television! We were in a modern society, weren’t we? Then what was the matter with them?
“We learned from recent studies that people avoiding social media for one week might result in considerable improvements in their well-being, depression, and anxiety,” the staff explained with patience to me when I questioned their service. “And now, many hotels and homestays around the world have been offering visitors exactly this, sir…”
Later, I ran across some brochures about such trend in my room. Sheldon Chalet, a famous place of interest in Alaska, has gone tech-free in an attempt to provide its guests with a truly relaxing vacation without technology. Owner Marne Sheldon hopes that guests can become less dependent of technology. “Here they can spend their nights looking at shooting stars and the aurora (极光), rather than checking through smartphones, messages and posts or watching the news.” For travelers who prefer peace in the sun and sand, one tiny island in the Caribbean has no televisions, telephones or WiFi. Guests at the island’s resort have to communicate with staff using traditional methods, such as raising or lowering a flag outside their cottage!
“In today’s environment of constant information and digital connection, many people are in need of a digital detox (数码脱瘾).” Anyway, as for my case, it is actually a new luxury—peace and quiet.

9 . Overtourism happens when the number of tourists or the management of the tourism industry in a destination becomes unsustainable (不可持续的). When there are too many visitors, the quality of life for the local community can be affected, the surrounding natural environment can become worse, and the quality of the tourists’ experience can fall.
However, in most places, overtourism is not a hopeless situation. Destinations all over the world have already showed ways to overcome the obstacles presented by overcrowding and unsustainable tourism management.
East Africa, for example, has turned the gorilla (大猩猩) visiting into a once-in-a-lifetime experience by putting limits on daily permits, while maintaining conservation efforts inside native forests and offering jobs to local guides. In Antarctica, the Antarctic Treaty limits the size of ships that land there as well as the number of people they can bring ashore at one time; it also requires a minimum guide-to-tourist ratio (比率) while tourists are off the boat.
Local governments, of course, are largely responsible for keeping sustainability in the tourism industry. But approaches to reducing the negative effects of overtourism can come down to individual travelers as well. One of the best ways is to become a responsible tourist by looking outside of the mainstream travel destinations. Consider outer cities or less-visited attractions to avoid crowds altogether while experiencing the destination’s daily culture outside of the popular areas. There are countless places that want and need more tourists to explore.
If you just have to visit the popular destinations, consider visiting during their off-season. People who rely on tourism to live on need support during the off-season more than any other time of year. Besides, it will save money since accommodations and flights tend to be cheaper. Even better, off-season travel puts less pressure on the environment.

A.Local authorities. | B.Individual tourists. |
