1 . The Nautilus expedition to the Cayman Islands
Hi! I’m Talita and this is my blog! Enjoy!
Day 1: August 15th
Wow! I can’t believe I’m actually here on Nautilus. I’m one of five very lucky students chosen to go on Nautilus’s four-day expedition (探险) to the Cayman Islands. We had a talk from the expedition leader Dr. Katy Croff Bell, about where we’re going and what we’ll be doing. Oh, and all the safety rules as well, of course!
Day 2: August 16th
What an amazing day! In the morning, we met Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the wreck (残骸) of the Titanic! After lunch, we had a tour around Nautilus. We looked at the labs, and we went up to the bridge — that’s where the captain of the ship works. I even got a chance to guide the ship! Later we learned about Hercules. This robot is sent deep into the sea to look for shipwrecks, to study the plants and animals, and to look at the rocks in an area.
Day 3: August 17th
This morning we appeared on the Nautilus Live website and talked to students around the world about our expedition. It was amazing — I feel like a real famous person now! The afternoon was NOT cool, however. There was a big storm, and we all felt very seasick!
Day 4: August 18th
This morning was beautiful, and the sea was peaceful. Perfect for a dive. Unfortunately, it was Hercules, not us, who got to go diving. In the afternoon, we arrived at Grand Cayman. Although I’m sad to leave the Nautilus team (especially Hercules), I’m excited to explore the islands and the waters!

Hudson had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. This was more than the usual excitement about end-of-year trips. And now, finally, after weeks of expectation, Hudson, Davion, Tasha, and their friends Trey and Justin were at Six Flags Great America, which was home to more roller coasters and games than any place north of Florida.
They were waiting in line for the Twisted Twister—the scariest roller coaster. In front of them, the coaster rose threateningly out of the ground. From the very beginning, the Twisted Twister lived up to its name. The black coaster tracks corkscrewed 5 almost immediately. Then, the riders in the yellow cars were given a moment to catch their breath as they were cranked (转动) slowly to the top of a hill. But the relief didn’t last long. As soon as the roller coaster cars were over the peak, the track twisted again. And again and again and again.
Glancing at it, Hudson felt his stomach was too tight to say anything at all, The Twisted Twister was the scariest roller coaster he had ever seen. But he wasn’t about to mention his fear to his friends. Because they would tell him that he was acting like a little kid, too scared to go on the park’s best ride. He felt dorky and awkward standing there. The sea of people between them and the Twisted Twister was steadily getting smaller. Hudson smiled weakly as his friends cheered when they counted just three rope barriers to go. Then two. Then one. And then they were at the stairs. Davion, Justin, and Trey were nearly jumping up and down with excitement. But Hudson could only hear people screaming, and he couldn’t even tell if the screams were because of delight or terror. And he knew, suddenly, that he could not make it.

5 . The city of Venice, Italy, has finally made a long-awaited decision. Starting on August 1, 2021,cruise ships(游轮)will no longer be allowed to enter the city’s waters.
Contrary to popular opinion, these cruise ship visitors contribute relatively little to the local tourism economy. The New York Times reported cruise ship passengers amount to 73% of visitors, but contribute a mere 18% of tourism dollars. ”The percentage is inverted for people who spend at least one night at a hotel; they represent 14%of visitors, but 48% of the business.”
Many people are overjoyed by the news, especially environmental activists. Firstly, he cruise ships would disturb the waterways and erode(侵蚀)the foundations of already weak buildings. A 2019 study published in Nature found the waves created by large ships could “redistribute industrial pollutants already present in the waters.” Others have said these same waves carve huge holes in the underwater bottoms of buildings, making them unstable. Furthermore, when canals are deepened in order to allow larger boats, it destroys coastal habitats and makes floods worse. This is part of the reason why, in recent years, Venice has experienced terrible flooding that completely flooded St. Mark’s Square and other landmarks.
The announcement came as a surprise as many did not expect the regional government to act so swiftly. In April a projected ban was issued, but it depended on finding an alternative port for the ships-a requirement that local people complained could take years to achieve. The announcement made last week, however, did away with that condition, allowing the city to move forward quickly with the ban.
Hopefully, more travelers are also realizing industrial-style tourism is a terrible way to travel for many reasons. It’s not unlike industrial agriculture and fast fashion in that its goal is to force as many sights, landmarks, and countries into as tight a schedule as possible, for as little money as possible. Its concentration on convenience erodes human connections, preservation of meaningful spots that make travel so valuable in the first place.
1. What does the underlined word “inverted” mean in Paragraph 2?A.Increased slightly. | B.Looked down upon. | C.Adjusted accordingly. | D.Turned upside down. |
A.Reasons for Venice’s terrible floods. | B.Dangers cruise ships brought about. |
C.Reaction to the long-awaited decision. | D.Damage erosion waves did to buildings. |

7 . Parisians have always been known for their courage and enthusiasm. They are very generous and trusting. The culture of communication is well developed among the local people, as they are taught to establish contact with others from early childhood. Here in Paris it is believed that a quiet and modest (谦逊的) person will never succeed even if he or she is very talented and smart.
Visitors are advised to learn at least a bit of French before their trip. If locals see a traveler who tries to communicate using the native language, they start respecting this person and are ready to help. It is worth remembering that even fluent English will cause only a sense of contempt (蔑视) among locals.
Paris is famous for its colorful celebrations and festivals. Various interesting events take place at Christmas and on New Year’s Eve here. June 21 is the day of a famous music festival in particular—this event attracts many music lovers from different countries of the world. All day long, the squares of the city are turned into concert spots, where free concerts are performed. Bastille Day is a very interesting holiday which is celebrated annually on July 14. A beautiful military parade(阅兵) is a necessary part of Bastille Day. The first mention about this celebration was made in 1789. The holiday ends up with grand fireworks.

Paris can impress anyone with its cultural richness and diversity. In this magical city, something interesting happens all the time. 9 . For many foreigners, finding new friends can ease the often overwhelming task of adjusting to a new life abroad. The following countries can definitely feel more welcoming than others.
Uganda
This East African country received the highest marks for friendliness. According to the InterNations report, 57% of foreigners in Uganda gave ‘general friendliness’ the best possible rating (the global average was 26%). Not only that, not a single respondent ranked this factor negatively. Uganda isn’t without its problems, however, including the occasional power failure, and pollution from old cars.
Costa Rica
The Central American country ranks high across all factors when it comes to how easily foreigners fit in. Almost nine out of 10 foreigners (89%) are pleased with the general friendliness of the population, and eight out of 10 (79%) feel at home, according to the survey.
“If you make an effort to understand and eagerly accept the Costa Rican culture, you are very much welcomed with open arms and considered a friend.”
Colombia
This South American hotspot feels like home fast, according to many foreigners.
“The Colombian people are eager to show their country in a positive light and are very receptive and hospitable towards newcomers,” said Anne. Colombia is one of the countries in the world with the lowest percentage of foreign-born residents.
Oman
As one of the sunniest countries in the world, Oman also has friendly residents who reflect the warm climate. A welcoming culture rooted in faith also leads to an openness with newcomers.
While the cost of living in Oman is growing more expensive, it was recently ranked by Mercer as one of the more affordable places to live in the Middle East.

10 . If you’ve been reading my reports from Australia, you’d be wondering why I haven’t mentioned the people I’m travelling with.
People often talk to you more than they would if you were with someone else. On the plane, I chatted with Lucy who was going on holiday. I quickly made friends with Rhiannon in Singapore airport. I love chatting to new people, but quite often I get the feeling that people talk to you only because they feel bad for you having no company (陪伴).
The strangest thing has been other people’s reactions. When I walk into a restaurant and ask for a table for one, the waiter looks surprised. And the surprise only increases when I tell them I’m here on business. Yes, that’s right. I’m not on holiday. It’s not only middle-aged men in suits who go on business trips, a young woman in her flowery dress can too.
Doing things on your own can be scary, but it’s also so rewarding (有益的).
A.That’s because there isn’t anyone. |
B.Travelling alone has its ups and downs. |
C.There’re oceans of advantages about travelling alone. |
D.But just because I’m alone it doesn’t mean I’m lonely! |
E.People tend to distrust you when they see you on your own. |
F.Travelling by myself has made me so much more confident. |
G.It reminds me how much we judge people by their appearance. |
