文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。作者主要讲述了自己为什么要进行冒险旅行的原因以及进行冒险旅行和意义。

2 . Friends always ask why I, a middle-aged woman with no athletic (运动) talent (天赋), travel to perilous places — the jungles (丛林) of Thailand or Borneo, for example, where the water is often unsafe and the food risky; places with infectious diseases, poisonous snakes and the wildest animals.

I never know how to answer. Nine years ago I suffered a stroke (中风). To prevent another stroke, my doctors told me, I’d have to take dangerously high levels of blood thinner (血液稀释剂) for the rest of my life and any travel would be risky (冒险的).

I had to think about what was important to me: family, of course, and friends. But then what? No matter how many times I thought about it, I could not be happy without travel. Then I had to decide how I might manage the risk.

The first real test of my travel courage came nine months after my stroke when I joined my husband, Jack, on a business trip to China. After we’d toured the remains of a Tang dynasty temple on a high mountain, Jack wanted to ride down on a toboggan (长雪橇).

Before the stroke it would’ve seemed like fun. But now? I hesitated. My mental klaxon (高音喇叭) screamed warnings about the consequences of a cut, a fall, and a crash. Then, gaining confidence from who knew where, I lowered myself carefully into the toboggan, which marked my adventure (冒险) travel come back.

In the years since then, I’ve traveled about twenty-five percent of the time. Through it all, my lucks held out — no deadly falls, no car accidents or serious infections. For me, adventure travel is a risk worth taking. Travel broadens my world and keeps me connected to nature. What’s more, saying “yes” to travel keeps me connected to myself.

1. What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Energetic.B.Dangerous.C.RomanticD.Famous.
2. What did the doctors advise the author to do?
A.Do proper exercise.B.Enjoy the rest of her life.

3. Why did the author mention her travel to China?
A.It was her last adventure.B.She recovered (恢复) her courage (勇气) through it.
C.She liked the beautiful scenery in China.D.It was the most dangerous experience in her life.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.A business trip to ChinaB.Stroke, a dangerous disease
C.How I overcame the fear of diseaseD.Why I still travel to the wild

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。很多人认为城市生活充满压力,但是作者认为城市为人们提供了很多便利和乐趣,其优点大于其缺点。

4 . Some people say that city living in the 21st century is stressful and offers no advantages, but I don’t agree with them completely.

With the development of high-tech and the improvement of living qualities, more and more people crowd into the city, which leads to the uncontrollable urbanization(城市化). Because of this, some of the largest cities must be fairly oppressive(压抑的)places to live in if you are short of money or unemployed. However, for those with much income, a city provides colorful environment which enables people to enjoy their modern life. In that case, I believe the advantages of urban living far outweigh its shortcomings.

Regarding shopping, as for me, rather than click on the Internet to get what I want, I prefer to window shop. All kinds of shopping malls and supermarkets located in the city centre really content me. What’s more, a large city’s service even covers numbers of the surrounding towns and benefits many people.

In terms of entertainment, city residents are usually spoiled for choice, from amusement parks to sport stadiums; whoever you are will find exactly what you need. Maybe go to a concert tonight and visit museums tomorrow. City always contains various activities and is full of energy.

City also provides better opportunities with so many choices and challenges. Cities with universities offer high-standard education so that graduates from these places always get ideal jobs with considerable salary. Every day in the business district, you can see a fierce competition among those large companies, while there are exactly places that may give birth to talents.

Many people may complain about the traffic jam or pollution in the city, but I think with some useful measures to take, our city will be more habitable rather than stressful.

1. What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?
A.City living in the 21st century is stressful.
B.City provides more conveniences and pleasures.
C.City living brings great trouble to the youth.
D.City is gradually dying out as a matter of fact
2. The advantages of urban living are        .
A.disposable income and colorful environment
B.quantities of population and shopping centers
C.great entertainments and better education
D.strong measures and fresh air
3. City residents are usually spoiled for choice         .
A.because there are no more choices for amusements
B.because they can hardly find what they like to do
C.because there are so many kinds of entertainments
D.because they will spend more money in a way

5 . You want to have fun and adventure and so you decide to travel somewhere to do it. Sounds like a simple enough thing. And basically it is. But what is adventure? That is the key here and the answer can be different for different people.

For those who love sports, adventure travel can have a whole different meaning than for those who like history. The physical travel types that you can find include such adventure travel as white water rafting ( 白 浪 漂 流 ), kayaking or climbing and hiking to some mountains somewhere. To the hiker, backpacking across Ireland might be their adventure. For this type of person, adventure travel almost always includes something physical. Often the goal is to push their body’s limits and test their individual endurance (耐力).

For those who less want to climb mountains, adventure travel might mean traveling to Nepal and taking in the local festivals. Wine tasting in Italy is also vacation adventure for the more relaxed traveler who enjoys peace and comfort. Anything that is opposite to the normal scope (范围) of the traveler’s lifestyle defines (定义) adventure.

Adventure travel is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all type of vacation. Adventure depends on the person’s physical limits, how much money the person has and what the person enjoys doing. Going beyond the normal is adventurous for many. If your life is quite busy, then sitting on a beach in the moonlight with your family might be adventure for you. The point is not what you do but that you have a good time and that it is an adventure for YOU — not for the person next to you.

Do not sit home this year when vacation time rolls around. Go beyond your normal routine and try something new. If you usually spend your vacation sunbathing on a beach, try hiking, instead, through the mountains. Look around you, think beyond your comfort zone and head out on an adventure vacation.

1. For a quiet traveler, he is most likely to choose        .
A.backpacking across a country
B.wine tasting in a bar
C.hiking to some mountains
D.white water rafting
2. To have an adventure travel, the most important is        .
A.whether you enjoy yourself
B.whether you try something dangerous
C.where you go for the traveling
D.what you do in the traveling
3. From the passage, we can make a conclusion that        .
A.adventure travel always includes something dangerous
B.adventure travel will cost you a large sum of money
C.anything that goes beyond the normal is adventure travel
D.adventure travelers like to do things to the limits of their body
4. The main idea of the passage is        .
A.tips on adventure travel
B.who is interested in adventure travel
C.what is adventure travel
D.popular places for adventure travel

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。人类一直对时间旅行很感兴趣,从理论上来说,时间旅行是可行的,但时间旅行未必是好事。作者认为我们最好还是活在当下。

9 . If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.

The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is the science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.

But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking said you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship—going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.

Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveller were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveller wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?

And would you really like to visit the future? In H. G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles (触角). If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.

1. The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show .
A.people’s interest in time travel
B.the special features of the book
C.the long history of time travel
D.the contribution of H. G. Wells
2. Einstein’s and Hawking’s theories .
A.have similarities in many ways
B.push the invention of the first spaceship
C.have proved wrong by some time travellers
D.suggest the possibility to invent the time machine
3. In Paragraph 4, “grandfather paradox” probably refers to the idea that .
A.the traveller is prevented from meeting his grandfather
B.the traveller goes back in time to seek for his grandfather
C.the grandfather’s death makes the traveller’s birth impossible
D.The reunion of the traveller and his grandfather brings happiness
4. What is probably the author’s attitude towards time travel?
A.Unclear. B.Skeptical.
C.Supportive. D.Unconcerned.
