It’s one of the longest train journeys in the world -2,910 miles across China. And when photographer Matthieu Paley was looking for ways     1    (get)his wife and two sons from Hong Kong to the northwest China it looked like the perfect choice.

“I thought it’d be     2    (amaze),” he says. “We will get to see China!” Even better the train’s 52-hour journey from Guangdong, near Hong Kong, to Xinjiang was much simpler and far less expensive     3     flying.

Paley and his family saw China change with every mile. The train’s last stop is a city     4    (call)Urumqi. The comfort of the train and the beauty of the landscapes attracted the Paleys. Paley remembers, “We were all looking at each other the last day     5    (wish)it would last another 24 hours!”

After a few    6    (day)in Urumgithe Paleys set out for Pakistan. They     7    (take)a bus southwest to the city of Hotan and then boarded another train going northwest to the city of Kashgar. Most of the passengers on this train were Uygur, a Chinese minority who live mostly in the west. Uygurs speak a language     8     is similar to Turkish. And since Paley is fluent in Turkish, he could talk with these passengers and get a sense of their lives.

“It was     9     short trip, just six hours, Paley says. “The journey let     10    (I)see the vastness and beauty of China.

The China Tourism Academy released a report on Monday     1    (say) that education tourism has become popular among people of all ages.

More than 6 million people joined study tours last year,    2    (high) even than the pre-pandemic (新冠前) number of 4.8 million in 2019.

“The key    3    (different) between study travel and other tourism products is that study travel focuses on learning knowledge while traveling,” Luo Shugang, director of the committee, said at a meeting on Monday. He said that study travel can date back to the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties,    4    many poets wrote of their experiences on study travels.

I packed my luggage and headed for the airport.     1    (fortune), it was raining hard when I arrived in Yangshuo just before dawn. But I didn’t care. A few hours before, I’d been at home in Hong Kong,     2     its choking smog crowding the city. Here, the air was clean and fresh, even with the rain.

Last year, my brother and I went to Miami for a vacation. Some of my friends who had been there before said     1     was a wonderful holiday destination. Before we went, we had planned for     2     (month). When the day came, we were ready.

After our plane landed, we went to the hotel. We had made our reservation six months     3     (early), but the man at the front desk said there had been a mistake. We     4     (tell) that our rooms had not been reserved for that week, but for the week after. I didn’t understand     5     this would happen and my credit card had already been charged     6     the booking. What’s worse, the hotel had been fully booked. When we were wondering what to do, the manager came out. She was     7     (surprise) helpful. She apologized for the mistake and gave us a spare VIP room on     8     top floor. We had never stayed in such an amazing room, and we weren’t charged extra.

The next day, my brother and I went to the beach     9     we watched some people play volleyball. We got a little     10     (sunburn), but the day had been so relaxing that we didn’t mind.

As everyone knows, it is Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province where the local porcelain (瓷器) is highly desirable that is the center of world porcelain. Last year, my school held a two-day research activity,     1     (guide) by the slogan, “Exploring ceramic (陶瓷的) culture, traveling through ancient and modern times”. The aim was to build students’     2    (aware) of traditional culture.

On our way to Jingdezhen, our guide introduced     3     (we) to the basics of porcelain production. Our first stop was the Museum of Chinese Ceramics, which has     4     unique and exquisite collection of porcelain made from materials such as clay (陶土) and stone.

The guide told us the great achievements in ceramics from ancient times until today. I listened carefully to everything.     5     (date) back to Neolithic (新石器时代) period, clay was used to make pottery (陶器),     6     was used to carry water and food. Today, we still use porcelain but our pottery is really far more beautiful than the products of those times.

    7     the second day, the team leader took us to a small DIY porcelain factory. Under the guidance of the teacher, we     8     (give) some clay and the chance to design a piece of pottery. Although our efforts were not as beautiful as the articles in the museum, they were our own work. The two-day activity was enjoyable and     9    (meaning). I learned a lot about porcelain and     10     (make) an item on my own. It meant a lot to me.
