COMO POINT YAMU
This is a light-filled design heaven. Sharp lines frame views of Phuket’s east coast and a swimming pool overlooks the Bay. The restaurants are equally stylish - Nahmyaa was given a Michelin Plate for its southern Thai dishes, and there’s also a private beach club on a nearby island, which more than makes up for the hotel’s own lack of golden sands.
ROOMS: Villas from£208, B&B. www. comohotels. com
OUR JUNGLE CAMP
Set on the mainland around a three-hour drive north of Phuket lies an old rainforest. Our Jungle Camp’s bamboo huts and treehouses are minimalist and cool enough in the evening. There’s a great restaurant on site and the camp can arrange a variety of activities, including nature hikes and rafting along lazy rivers.
ROOMS: From £15, room only. www. khaosokecoresort. com
THANYAPURA
Go for gold at this fitness resort in the island’s jungly heart. Top athletes come here to take advantage of the excellent facilities, including two swimming pools, tennis courts and boxing rings. Rooms are simple but have everything you need, including comfy beds and power showers.
ROOMS: Villas from £70, B&B. www. thanyapura. com
SALA PHUKET MAI KHAO BEACH

3 . If you were to rate the most walkable cities in the world, what would you look for? Would it be how shaded the sidewalks are? How many benches there are along the way to your destination? Or maybe how close you are to shops or local attractions?
Well, the researchers at the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), located in New York. US, wanted to know which of the world’s cities were the best for pedestrians (行人). So, they did just that.
To determine which cities were the most walkable, they rated cities based on factors such as how close citizens were to car-free areas like public parks, how close citizens lived in relation to schools and hospitals, and how short their journeys were overall.
According to the study, they found that the most walkable cities in the world are London, Paris, Bogota and Hong Kong. Overall, London was at the top of the list, outranking (超过) nearly 1, 000 cities around the world on these key factors.
“In order to provide safety and inviting walking conditions for all city residents, it is essential to shift the balance of space in our cities away from cars, providing more travel options for people,” CEO of ITDP Heather Thompson told the magazine Cities Today. She continued, “We have so much to gain-from cleaner air to better health to stronger local economies and deeper bonds within communities, and we all need that now more than ever. ”
Unfortunately, it seems that very few cities make pedestrians a priority, though.
“Our city streets across the planet are already full of cars. If you really want to see the worst for walkability, it is the really sprawling (杂乱无序伸展的) cities of the US, ” commented Taylor Reich, a research associate at ITDP and the primary author of the guide to making cities more walkable.
So, what can cities do to make their streets friendlier for pedestrians?
“There’s no one secret sauce; there’s no one thing you can do to make a city walkable, ” Reich said. “It’s many decisions that are made at all levels from individual streets all the way up to the city design.”

C.Limiting the number of cars. | D.Connecting local communities. |
A.Cars are major contributors to reduced walkability. |
B.US cities are designed to give priority to pedestrians. |

10 . I come from a family of travelers. My mom started a travel agency when she was younger than I am now, and growing up they never left me behind when they went on their adventures.
I graduated early and got a degree from a community college by the time I turned 18. At that time, I had traveled to around 70 countries. This was the point in my life where people began to ask me the question that a young person will never want to be asked: “What are you going to do next?”
In an attempt to answer that question, I began by asking myself what I was most passionate about, which has always been traveling. That’s when it dawned on me — the very first time I thought about breaking the world record.
In 2016, I got serious and started working on my mission to travel to every single one of the world’s 196 sovereign nations without any official sponsorship. I spent countless hours crammed on planes, trains, chicken buses, tuk-tuks and junk boats traveling with nothing but a backpack. I have encountered health issues, spanning from malaria in West Africa to hospital-worthy food poisoning in Pakistan. I learned how to cope with public anxiety attacks by myself in foreign countries, and I endured the brain-sizzling frustration of dealing with officials from every country that requires a visa.
Believe it or not, beyond a record breaker, these memories are treasurable as they were the most defining moments of my life, spent far, far away from my comfort zone, I’m currently writing a book about my experiences in every country and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. After finally completing this massive life goal, I’ll be taking the next few months to nourish my physical and mental health as I make plans for the future.
1. Why are the young unwilling to be asked the question?A.They are uncertain about their future. |
B.They are unemployed after graduation. |
C.They don’t know which country to go next. |
D.They don’t have good communication skills. |

C.Invaluable. | D.Ordinary. |
