文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述英国著名的规划专家埃比尼泽·霍华德于1898年提出了“花园城市”的理论。该理论可视作现代城市规划的开端,并极大地影响了现代城市规划体系和理论。

2 . The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850-1928). After an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed “the Garden City”, almost certainly the source of Howard’s name for his later building plan of towns. Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on ideas popular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs.

The nineteenth-century poor city was a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: Though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression (萧条) and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard’s idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside; far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.

Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit; then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide range of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.

D.Each one would contain a certain type of business.
4. What could be the best title for the passage?

C.A New City in Chicago.D.A Famous Garden City in England.

7 . A new study in the journal of Tourism Analysis shows frequent travelers are happier with their lives than people who don’t travel at all.

Chun-Chu Chen, an assistant professor at Washington State University, conducted a survey to find out why some individuals travel more frequently than others and whether or not travel and tourism experiences have a lasting effect on happiness and wellness.

Additionally, participants in the survey who reported regularly traveling at least 75 miles away from home also reported being about 7% happier when asked about their overall well-being than those who reported traveling very rarely or not at all. The results of his analysis show individuals who pay more attention to tourism-related information and frequently discuss their travel plans with friends are more likely to go on regular vacations than those who aren’t constantly thinking about their next trip.

“While things like work, family life and friends play a bigger role in overall reports of well-being, the accumulation (积累) of travel experiences does appear to have a small yet noticeable effect on self-reported life satisfaction,” Chen said.

Participants in the study were asked about the importance of travel in their lives, how much time they spent looking into and planning future vacations, and how many trips they went on over a year. They were also asked about their life satisfaction. Out of the 500 survey participants, a little over half reported going on more than four pleasure trips a year. Only 7% of respondents did not take any vacations.

As travel restriction (限制) due to COVID-19 pandemic begin to relax in the future, the research could have important effects on both tourists and the tourism industry. Based on the results of the study, Chen said travel companies, resorts and even airlines, could launch social media campaigns, such as creating signs about the scientific benefits of vacation, to spark people’s interest in discussing their opinions about travel.

1. What is the benefit of frequent travelling according to the study?
A.Getting more tourism information.B.Making more friends.
C.Bettering tourism industry.D.Improving one’s well-being.
2. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.Why the professor carried out the study.
B.How the participants felt about the survey.

A.Tourism industry should improve their service.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文,讲述了珍妮和她的家人创建的密苏里明星被子公司让汉密尔顿焕发了生机的事迹。

8 . “I love small-town life,” says Jenny Doan from Hamilton, Missouri. “Sometimes I feel as if I were in a Norman Rockwell’s painting.” One hour northeast of Kansas City, this town has about 1,700 people. Though it may be small and unusual, thanks to Jenny, it’s no longer sleepy.

In November 2008, Jenny and her family started the Missouri Star Quilt (被子) Company on a small budget. Now up to 8,000 visitors go to Hamilton each month to shop at one of the company’s 13 stores, take a quilting class and communicate with other quilt lovers. “I try to go out to the shops every day to talk with our customers,” Jenny says.

Each shop has its own focus. There is one for girls, one for kids, and the popular Man’s Land, a comfortable hangout where anyone can relax on the sofa, watch TV or play ball games. Several homey restaurants, including a breakfast place, serve hungry shoppers.

Jenny, who became famous because of her weekly quilting YouTube videos, is still amazed to see lots of quilt lovers coming downtown. She says, “It feels like a little miracle (奇迹). When we moved here in 1995, everything was underdeveloped. If we hadn’t been led to do something, the town would be gone. What started off as a family business has now grown to include an entire community.”

Quilt-crazy visitors will want to stop by the Missouri Quilt Museum, in the town’ s historic high school building. It exhibits (展出) hundreds of quilts from local and international designers; it’s also home to the world’s largest toy sewing machine collection on public display.
