文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了随着青少年上网时间的增加,网络欺凌等网络安全问题日益严重,为使互联网成为一个更安全的地方而设置了国际互联网安全日,并就应对网络欺凌提出一些建议。

1 . Young people are spending more time in digital spaces. The Internet allows us to connect with people, share ideas, be creative, have fun and discover new things. Unfortunately, young people also face risks online. Common problems include cyberbullying (网络欺凌), receiving unwanted messages, seeing images and content you don’t want to see, or having your private information or photos shared without your permission.

Safer Internet Day (SID) is organized in the second week of February every year, and over 180 countries take part. The aim is to raise awareness of online issues and make the Internet a safer place. SID invites everyone to be part of a big conversation about online issues. This is particularly important for teenagers because they often experience unpleasant situations online, but they don’t always feel they can talk about them.

Cyberbullying is when someone uses the Internet to embarrass, threaten or hurt another person. If you experience cyberbullying, talk to an adult you trust as soon as possible. Don’t reply to any messages but save the evidence.

Going online often means spending time alone. When you feel down, social media can make you feel lonelier. Using social media might be related to higher levels of depression. So you need healthy social media use.

Whatever app you use, make sure you know who sees your posts and personal information. Limit what people can see, decide who can comment on your content and thwart other users’ comment. It may be illegal to share a photo or video of someone without their permission. The SID’s website has advice about what to do if someone shares pictures of you that you feel embarrassed about.

There is still a lot we don’t know about how time spent online affects people’s well-being. But talking about all the issues helps everyone understand common problems and know how to deal with them.

1. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A.The Internet has both good and bad sides.
B.The Internet is a safe place to share photos.
C.Young people should avoid going online.
D.Young people face more risks than adults.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.What we can do on SID.B.How to take part in SID.
C.The time of organizing SID.D.Some information about SID.
3. What should you do if you experience cyberbullying according to the text?
A.Use other social media.B.Turn to adults for help.
C.Reply to the messages.D.Deal with it with classmates.
4. What does the underlined word “thwart” in paragraph 5 mean?

According to various research studies in the field of online social networks it has been revealed that these sites are impacting the lives of the youth greatly. When using these sites such as Twitter, Facebook or Myspace, there are both positive and negative effects on the youth.

Firstly, social media helps the youth and any other user updated with what is happening around the world, and helps the teenagers stay connected and interact with each other even if they are many miles apart. This strengthens their relationship. Even if they finished school and moved to different locations, they stay connected and update one another.

In addition, social media sites have provided a platform whereby the youth can create groups and pages based on their Common discipline and end up building connections and opportunities for their respective careers by updating different topics to discuss. “The more social media we have, the more we think were connecting, yet we are really disconnecting from each other.” One researcher said.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍互联网的一些负面影响。

5 . As we know, the Internet can help develop friendships in many ways. It makes communication much more convenient.     1     Nowadays, your friends are just a click away.

Whenever someone needs help, friends from all over the world can immediately provide useful suggestions or information. Online communication can actually bring people closer to each other. In spite of this, some people believe that the Internet has many negative aspects.

2     Images really cannot replace a real-life smile or hug. According to a parenting expert, Denise Daniels, communicating through a screen makes it more difficult for children to concentrate or show kindness to others. Important social skills are developed through direct contact. It is these skills that enable us to develop lifelong friendships.

The Internet can make people self-centred.     3     For example, instead of having proper conversations with friends, some people are only concerned with their online popularity — How many “likes” did I get? How many followers do I have? — though we know that the number of “likes” or followers cannot compare to having long-term and rewarding friendships.     4     Posts about funny cat images do not necessarily help form meaningful relationship.

Online relationships may not be what they appear to be. Friendships are built on the basis of trust. With online communication you can never be 100 percent sure that the people you are chatting to are being honest about who they are.     5

In my opinion, friends should focus more on face-to-face communication, and less on online communication. This is the best way to maintain healthy relationships.

A.The Internet has completely changed people’s lives.
B.They never think of anyone or anything but themselves.
C.Talking online is no replacement for face-to-face contact.
D.You can stay in touch with friends no matter where you are.
E.It’s impolite to post embarrassing information of other people.
F.In addition, a lot of the content posted on social media is of little value.
G.Going online can be dangerous if you are easily influenced or too trusting.

6 . When you get in a car, you expect it will have functioning brakes. When you pick up medicine at the drugstore, you expect it won’t be polluted. But it wasn’t always like this. The safety of these products was terrible when they first came to market. It took much research and regulation to figure out how users can enjoy the benefits of these products without getting harmed.     1

Social media risks are everywhere. The dangers that algorithms designed to maximize attention represent to teens have become impossible to ignore. Other product design elements, often called “dark patterns,” designed to keep people using for longer, also appear to tip young users into social media overuse.     2     They say it’s their users’ fault for engaging with harmful content in the first place, even if those users are children or the content is financial trickery. They also claim to be defending free speech.

3     Under the Digital Services Act, which came into effect in Europe this year, platforms are required to take action to stop the spread of illegal content and can be fined up to 6 percent of their global incomes if they don’t do so. If this law is enforced, maintaining the safety of their algorithms and networks will be the most financially sound decision for platforms to make.

Despite these efforts, two things are clear. First, online safety problems are leading to real, offline suffering. Second, social media companies can’t, or won’t, solve these safety problems on their own.     4       Even safety issues like cyberbullying that we thought were solved can pop right back up. As our society moves online to an ever-greater degree, the idea that anyone, even teens, can just “stay off social media” becomes less and less realistic.     5

A.And those problems aren’t going away.
B.The current issues aren’t really about offline suffering.
C.Platforms already have systems to remove violent or harmful content.
D.Similarly, social media needs product safety standards to keep users safe.
E.It’s time we should require social media to take safety seriously, for everyone’s sake.
F.Internet platforms, however, have shifted blame on the consumers whenever criticized.
G.Some authorities are taking steps to hold social media platforms accountable for the content.

7 . Recent research demonstrates the harmful mental health effects caused by social media use, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal tendency and self-harm. Adolescents (青少年) who spend more than three hours per day on social media face twice the risk of poor mental health outcomes.

Addictive feeds — designed to make use of personal data to intensify (增强) users’ content that will keep them on the platform for as long as possible — have dramatically heightened the risk to young users’ well-being and made our children addicted to these social media outlets.

In the first seven years after addictive feeds were introduced, suicide rates for 10- to 14-year-old girls doubled and hospitalizations for suicidal tendency and attempts increased nearly twice for all adolescents.

Instead of responding to the problem, social media empires have made great efforts to keep and capture user engagement, and the consequences have been catastrophic.

Beyond the direct harm of social media addiction, the collection of children’s data by these giant companies puts our kids at huge risk, leaving them vulnerable (易受伤的) to having their location and other personal data tracked, shared and sold online. As a consequence, that data is at greater risk of falling into the wrong hands-including human traffickers, identity thieves and others who might prey (欺凌) on young people.

We will not stand by and watch an arms race among social media mega-corporations (大型企业) over who can best profit from our children’s pain and addiction. That is why we should use and are using every tool at our disposal to fight back against these damaging practices: from the courthouse to the statehouse.

1. What can we learn about addictive feeds?
A.They are food that can easily satisfy people.
B.They are internet content that can get people addicted.
C.They are kept on the platform just for a short period of time.
D.They are personal data stored on the internet for convenience.
2. Which word can best replace the underlined word in paragraph 4?
A.destructiveB.strikingC.uniqueD.effective
3. Why has the author written the article?
A.To introduce a research finding.
B.To explain the harms caused by addictive feeds.
C.To blame irresponsible social media mega-corporations.
D.To call on people to protect children against social media harms.
4. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Mental Health Is Safe for Children
B.Teens Should Be kept Away from Internet
C.Addictive Feeds Heighten Great Risks to Teens
D.Social Media Empires Are to Blame for Children’s Safety

Today I thought I’d blog about a question that has been asked many times — how do you stay safe online and avoid bad experiences on the Internet? I’m not an expert, but many years as a blogger have taught me a thing or two.

First of all, there’s the golden rule of the Internet: If you see or read something that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the site immediately. Don’t post comments or click on anything. Second, protect your privacy. Don’t give out your address or phone number. Someone might use the information to steal your identity. Identity theft is a common and serious problem. Third, be polite. Being online is no excuse for being rude, and you don’t want to become a target for a troll or cyberbully. A troll is a person who posts comments or questions in order to stir up trouble online. Trolls often use several false names so that they can stay on a site. A cyberbully uses the Internet to be mean to others. Like a troll, a cyberbully will also write something mean but it is usually directed at particular people. He or she may also post embarrassing photos and information about those people. However, the more polite you are, the less likely it is you will be attacked.

Have you had any bad experiences online, or do you have some good advice for staying safe? Post your comments below!

Boy579

Last year, we were having problems in our chat room. Mean comments were being posted by someone we didn’t know. I think he or she was only trying to make trouble.

Amy
A girl at my school had a very bad experience online. A photo of her had been posted online and she was being made fun of. It seemed like a joke at first, but the girl was very upset.

9 . Stop Spam!

When I first got an e-mail account over ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.    1    and we need specific laws that make spamming (发送垃圾邮件) a crime.

2    , the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly.    3     so individual e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails. Would people continue to use e- mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?

This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well.    4    . Companies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communication networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks.

For these reasons,    5    . Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

A.We want e-mail to continue to be useful
B.If people have to deal with an annoying spam
C.I believe that lawmakers need to legislate against spam
D.If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam
E.More and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products
F.Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company
G.These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are passed on to the consumer
