3 . I first met Charlie in the community soon after buying my apartment. He was a relatively short man around his mid-70s. At first, Charlie was very friendly and got along with people in a rather relaxing way.
But a few weeks later, the first time I joined the community meeting, things became difficult. The hot topic was to take control of the community gardens from Charlie and employ a professional gardener to do the job instead. All but Charlie agreed with the suggestion. Charlie had been doing the gardens as if they were his personal belongings. The problem was that his efforts weren’t what the rest of the owners seemed to want, and this led to a debate. As the meeting developed into a slanging match (互相谩骂), I decided to say something.
“Look! As a new owner, I have no interest in what happened in the past. I’m interested in how to solve the present situation. The problem is that I can’t even open my garage door properly because there’s a tree planted too close to it. Finding a professional gardener to solve the problem sounds like a great solution to me.”
Most of the other owners appeared relieved, but Charlie was annoyed. Finally, at the request of everyone, except Charlie, a professional gardener was hired to manage the community gardens.
From that day on, I became Charlie’s enemy. Later, I learned that he always lived in his own world. He was lonely because he had no friends, and he managed to alienate everyone in his life.
Suddenly one day, Charlie fell down the stairs, breaking his leg. Out of pity, I went to the hospital to care for him. During the three months we spent together, I gradually accepted this stubborn old man. After Charlie left the hospital, he became kind not just to me, but to the rest of the community. Since then, the friend lines s of the whole community has raised a lot.

4 . A loving wife saved her husband’s life after she insisted on a second opinion for his sudden illness. The man, who was suffering from bacterial meningitis (细菌性脑膜炎) but was initially misdiagnosed (误诊) with an ear infection, might not have survived had they waited any longer.
Jason and Aleck Lang, from Ogden, Utah, have been married for nine years. They have made their home in Phoenix, Arizona, and are raising three young children together.
On the evening of March 17, 2021, Aleck received a text from Jason, who was at work, complaining of head and ear pain. The mother of three began to look for sitters for their kids in case Jason’s condition got worse or even remained the same.
Around 6:30 in the morning, Jason — who had no history of headaches — began begging his wife to take him to the emergency room. Close friends “dropped everything” to sit for the children, and Aleck drove Jason to the nearest ER and dropped him off.
“They had given him a couple of different medications (药) for his headache and the doctor diagnosed him with an ear infection,” Aleck said. The doctor dismissed Aleck’s concerns and Jason was discharged (出院) shortly before midday. Back at home, Jason’s condition got worse. Aleck’s instinct (直觉) guided her to drive him to a different hospital, where he received a second, accurate diagnosis: bacterial meningitis.
Jason stayed in the hospital for five days. “The doctor said Jason most likely wouldn’t be alive if we waited even a couple of hours more,” Aleck explained. “Jason was fighting for his life.” She was also busy and distracted caring for her three kids, who gave her joy while she missed Jason greatly. “It gave me a chance to see how strong they can be, and how strong I can be for them,” she said.

With only a week before New Year knocked on their door, Faith sat at her old sewing machine—a special gift from her late mother apart from her sewing skills—secretly sewing new clothes for her father and three younger siblings (兄弟姐妹) and preparing them for Easter.
Faith was the eldest daughter in the family and responsible enough to shoulder her disabled father’s responsibilities. Faith’s father, George, lost his arm in an accident. Despite his disability, George did his best to raise his children, but money was tight, and there were a lot of mouths to feed.
When George couldn’t afford new beds for his children as they grew taller and older, he made new furniture with one hand. It took him several restless nights to arrange the supplies and complete the work. Out of gratitude, Faith decided to do something for him a week before Easter.
“Let’s have a festive dinner, Dad!” she told George. “We haven’t celebrated anything since Mom’s death. Let’s make a change this New Year! Please!”
“Honey,” George said helplessly, “I barely have any money left, and I’d hate to see my children go to bed starving.”
But then George looked at the sadness in his children s eyes and realized he shouldn’t have said that.
“But,” he added, “I guess I can try, can’t I? I can get some eggs and flour, and let’s get your mother’s cookbook from the attic (阁楼). She had these inexpensive and delicious recipes in there. How about that?”
“Oh, perfect!” Faith cheered. “You’re the best, Dad! We’ll finally have a proper dinner!” she shouted to her younger siblings, and the joy on his kids’cheeks made George realize that nothing was more important to him than the happiness of his children.
The next day, George could take his kids to shop. The single father rolled his shopping cart through the aisles (过道), picking up a large bag of flour, a dozen eggs, and cheap sliced ham. After they finished shopping, George and his children decided to walk home because the grocery store was only a few blocks away.

Every Saturday afternoon, Jimmy and his dad would go to the park to play baseball. They always walked past a homeless man who always sat at the same street corner. Jimmy’s dad always gave the man some money. “Someday, I’ll pay you back, John!” the man said. “Sure, Wayne,” Jimmy’s dad replied.
One day, Jimmy held his dad’s hand, asking, “Dad, how does that man know your name?” John answered, “Oh, when I was in college, I knew Wayne. He was on the brink (边缘) of a big discovery that could bring him a patent. Anyway, things didn’t go well for him. So whenever I see him, I give him some money. And he tells me he’s using it for lab supplies. I don’t think it’s true, but I pretend I do. And when he tells me he’ll share the profits of his discovery, I tell him I believe it, too.”
Jimmy didn’t understand anything his dad was saying, but he felt the compassion(同情) in his voice. So he stopped his dad and gave him a big hug. Jimmy didn’t know it was his last hug. That night, while Jimmy’s dad was out for his evening run, his heart stopped beating.
The only person Jimmy was living with was his grandmother, Wendy. And they ended up living in an old small house. Life got very tough for them. Although Wendy was old, she found a cleaning job. But her health started to fail and Jimmy was very worried about her.
Jimmy became very quiet. To cheer him up, one Saturday, Wendy went to the park and threw the ball around with Jimmy. After that, they came out. And there at the corner, Jimmy saw his dad’s homeless friend, Wayne.
“Wait, Grandma!” Jimmy cried. “There’s something I have to do!” Jimmy walked up to Wayne and turned his pockets inside out. He said to Wayne, “Sorry, but I only have twenty cents.” “That’s okay. Every cent helps!” Wayne said. “How’s your dad? I haven’t seen him for a while.”

10 . Anna Chojnicka was quarantined (隔离) last year in her house because of COVID-19. She was so bored that she absent-mindedly picked up a banana on her kitchen table and started running her fork along the outside of the skin. The dark lines that appeared on the skin looked interesting to her, and she watched as the marks gradually got darker. She continued doodling and was soon interested.
Chojnicka started making pictures that were more and more complex (复杂的) using the same way—only pressure, no paint—until she drew an Ethiopian coffee pot and cup. Her new hobby was born. Since that first day she knew what she could do by drawing on a banana skin, Chojnicka has been posting her daily paintings online, where she has thousands of fans. “I haven’t missed a day, but I know I can’t keep that up forever,” she says, adding that she finishes her daily picture, takes a photo and then eats the banana because she doesn’t like waste.
Her art comes to life by oxidization (氧化). Just like apples, bananas oxidize or turn brown as their cells interact with oxygen in the air. Cells that are damaged brown faster. By varying the time when she applied the marks, Chojnicka discovered that she could create complex pictures.
While her banana drawings began as a way to overcome boredom, they have become something bigger. “I saw a chance to put it to something good,” says Chojnicka. With the help of her social media fans, she has collected about $1,600 for FareShare, an organization in the United Kingdom that provides food for people in need.
