文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者和Charlie之间的故事,作者直言Charlie的园艺工作做的不好,但是也同情孤独的Charlie,在他受伤以后去医院照顾他。

2 . I first met Charlie in the community soon after buying my apartment. He was a relatively short man around his mid-70s. At first, Charlie was very friendly and got along with people in a rather relaxing way.

But a few weeks later, the first time I joined the community meeting, things became difficult. The hot topic was to take control of the community gardens from Charlie and employ a professional gardener to do the job instead. All but Charlie agreed with the suggestion. Charlie had been doing the gardens as if they were his personal belongings. The problem was that his efforts weren’t what the rest of the owners seemed to want, and this led to a debate. As the meeting developed into a slanging match (互相谩骂), I decided to say something.

“Look! As a new owner, I have no interest in what happened in the past. I’m interested in how to solve the present situation. The problem is that I can’t even open my garage door properly because there’s a tree planted too close to it. Finding a professional gardener to solve the problem sounds like a great solution to me.”

Most of the other owners appeared relieved, but Charlie was annoyed. Finally, at the request of everyone, except Charlie, a professional gardener was hired to manage the community gardens.

From that day on, I became Charlie’s enemy. Later, I learned that he always lived in his own world. He was lonely because he had no friends, and he managed to alienate everyone in his life.

Suddenly one day, Charlie fell down the stairs, breaking his leg. Out of pity, I went to the hospital to care for him. During the three months we spent together, I gradually accepted this stubborn old man. After Charlie left the hospital, he became kind not just to me, but to the rest of the community. Since then, the friend lines s of the whole community has raised a lot.

1. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Charlie lived in harmony with all the neighbors.
B.The gardens in the community belong to Charlie.
C.Charlie’s efforts weren’t recognized by the rest of the owners.
D.All the owners agreed to find a suitable gardener to do the job.
2. Why did the author mention the tree?
A.To say something.B.To show his anger.
C.To make new friends.D.To support the proposal.
3. What does the underlined word “alienate” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Give way toB.Stay away fromC.Keep track ofD.Be concerned about
4. Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Fair and kindB.Helpful and creativeC.Brave and curiousD.Lonely and stubborn

Once upon a time, there lived a poor but cheerful shoemaker. He was so happy that he sang all day long. The children loved to stand around his window to listen to him.

Next door to the shoemaker lived a rich man. He used to sit up all night to count his gold. In the morning, he went to bed, but he could not sleep because of the sound of the shoemaker’s singing. One day, he thought of a way to stop the singing. He wrote a letter to the shoemaker inviting him over for a cup of tea.

The shoemaker came at once, and to his great surprise, the rich man gave him a bag of gold as a gift. The shoemaker took the bag and thanked the rich man. When he returned home, the shoemaker couldn’t wait to open the bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life! He sat down at his bench and began, carefully, to count it. The children watched through the window.

There was so much there that the shoemaker was afraid to let it out of his sight. So he took it to bed with him. But he could not sleep for worrying about it. So he got out of bed and went to hide it in the attic (阁楼), but he was not sure if that was a good place.

Very early in the morning, he got up and brought his gold down from the attic. He had decided to hide it up the chimney (烟囱) instead. But after breakfast, he thought it would be safer in the chicken house. So he hid it there. But he was still uneasy, and in a little while he dug a hole in the garden and buried his bag of gold in it.

Ella loved her new life in Skagway, Alaska, except for one thing-Grandmother wasn’t happy.

In Kansas, Ella went to Grandmother’s house every day after school, and they baked or gardened or sewed(缝纫). Then Papa announced he’d gotten a job in Alaska. She protested for weeks but finally decided to go too. Ella was overjoyed. She couldn’t imagine living any where without Grandmother.

By autumn, they were in Skagway. Ella had never known so much excitement. Grandmother, however, didn’t share Ella’s enthusiasm. As winter had set in, Grandmother mostly stayed inside and complained about the cold.

“I wish you were happy,” Ella whispered. “I wish I had a garden of sunflowers peeking through my window right now,” Grandmother said.

Ella worried that if Grandmother didn’t cheer up soon, she might return to Kansas. So she went to her friend Sara who had lived in Skagway with her Aunt Grace for three years. Ella asked her if sunflowers could grow here. “Maybe,” Sara said. “Let’s ask my aunt.” Ella liked Aunt Grace. She reminded her of how Grandmother used to be in Kansas.

Ella explained her problem and Aunt Grace told her sunflowers could grow here only in summer. “Maybe there’s another way,” Aunt Grace said. “We can make your grandmother some sunflower quilt blocks(几何拼布)that will be cheery and warm.”

Ella chose the brightest fabrics in Grandmother’s scrap bag and brought them to Sara’s house. Every afternoon Ella, Sara, and Aunt Grace sewed sunflower quilt blocks. It was slow going but enjoyable. The finished blocks reminded her of Grandmother’s garden in Kansas. It was fun to talk with Sara while they sewed, and Aunt Grace told them stories about when she was young. They always took a break for tea and cookies, too.

Lately Ella hadn’t spent much time with Grandmother. She worried that the quilt wouldn’t be finished soon enough. Meanwhile, Grandmother seemed sadder and sadder, always talking about her home and friends in Kansas. Ella wished she could tell Grandmother about the quilt, but she wanted to surprise her.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了作者在父亲的熏陶下,对音乐的热爱,以及音乐也成了作者的慰藉。

5 . The input Dad has on my career is incomparable. My earliest memories are of Dad sitting in the kitchen playing the guitar, listening to his favourite song by his favourite singer, and encouraging his little girl to poke (戳) keys randomly on the piano. Even watching Top of the Pops, he would get so passionate about music in it. We weren’t a religious family, but there was something spiritual about Dad’s connection with music.

Music also became a source of comfort for me. I failed to do well academically at school and had no friends. Being at school consumed so much of my emotional energy. Instead of going to school to learn stuff, I felt as though I was simply trying to get people to like me. Things were better, but the only time I truly felt happy was when I was at home listening to music with Mum and Dad or writing songs on the piano —and the older I got, the more powerful music felt.

Dad was always my biggest supporter. When I started giving live performances at the local bar, he was the one who drove me there and back. Freeing up that time wasn’t easy for an actor. His job might mean three weeks in the Czech Republic or working with George Lucas on The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones in Hollywood.

Dad has been involved with some amazing stuff, but Daddy Pig is the one that’s had the biggest impact all over the world. When I was flying to Australia for my first tour, I was trying to find something to watch on the little screen and I noticed they had Peppa Pig. If I’m missing home and family, I always put it on. Daddy Pig is a fairly real version of my dad —he loves chocolate cake, he’s funny and usually breaks things when he’s trying to mend them. Mum and Dad were friends with one of the producers of the show and I often wonder if he looked at my dad and thought, “That’s him …that’s Daddy Pig.”

1. What can we learn about the author’s father?
A.He was good at writing songs.
B.He was attached to music in his soul.
C.He encouraged her to play the guitar.
D.He was passionate about watching TV series.
2. How did the author’s father support her career?
A.By picking her up in a tight schedule.
B.By doing a demanding job as an actor.
C.By watching her musical performances.
D.By giving live performances at the local bar.
3. Why did the author mention Peppa Pig?
A.It’s her favourite childhood cartoon.
B.She saw her father through Daddy Pig.
C.She took pride in this world famous cartoon.
D.It’s a cartoon about her hometown and motherland.
4. Which of the following can best describe the author’s Dad?
A.Funny and honest.B.Strict and hardworking.
C.Famous and patient.D.Supportive and influential.
6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A lot of people look forward to retirement after decades of working. But on the other hand, there are others who are still so passionate about their field——it’s difficult for them to hang up their hats.

Depending on the career, it could be possible to continue working if one really wants to. That is unless health issues arise and leave the person no choice but to walk away.

Sadly, this is what happened to a man named Harold. Unfortunately, he found himself no longer able to work as a crane (起重机) operator because of his health. He felt lonely because his children didn’t visit him much.

Thanks to the kindness of a stranger, Harold was able to relive his days of working on the job site.

It all started when crane operator Shawn Beveridge of Ohio kept noticing a man in a wheelchair sitting outside of a nursing home. Day after day, the man would sit there watching the job site and the cranes move about for hours.

Shawn was confused why the elderly gentleman showed up every day, and finally became curious enough to introduce himself.

“Since day one when I arrived on this job site, I’ve noticed him sitting there every morning from 7 am, he takes lunch when we do and doesn’t leave until I shut the crane down and head out.” Shawn wrote in his blog. “I originally had thought to myself, ‘He’s just a curious old man and wanting to enjoy his days outside VS being cooped up in his room.’Well after a couple of days. I myself got curious, so I walked over and introduced myself to him.”

Shawn learned that the man’s name was Harold and the two ended up conversing for about two and a half hours.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。两位80岁的好朋友在80天的时间里周游世界,她们的经历证明了冒险没有年龄限制。

7 . Ellie Hamby, a documentary photographer, and Sandy Hazelip, a physician and lecturer, toured the world in 80 days, adventuring from the beaches of Bali to the deserts of Egypt.

Their first stop was Antarctica. They got to the southernmost continent after crossing the Drake Passage, the rough waters between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands. Since that first adventure, the pair have visited 18 countries across all seven continents.

Hazelip said she came across Hamby after her husband died in 1999. Before his death, he “planted the seed in my heart that we should start taking our grandsons on trips in the summer,” she said. This led her to the Zambia Medical Mission, a project run by Hamby and her husband in southern Africa.

The two bonded because both of them loved travelling and were committed to prioritizing unique experiences over comfort while abroad. Both became closer after Hamby’s husband died in 2005.

Hazelip said the idea for their trip originated a few years before they were each set to turn 80. “I just got the idea because we’d traveled previously together internationally,” she said. “And so about four years before we were going to turn 80, I mentioned to her one day, ‘Ellie, wouldn’t it be fun to go around the world in 80 days at age 80?’”

Over the past eighty days, the pair have ridden camels in Egypt, met elephants in Bali, danced in Nepal, and observed the Northern Lights in Finland. And despite the challenges international travel presents, the best friends said they finished their trip without any arguments.

Although Hamby and Hazelip have finished their worldly adventure and returned home to Texas, the two are already planning for their next trip. And they encouraged other older travelers not to let age hold them back. Aside from some small things—like deciding not to ride a motorbike in Bali because of concerns about falling—they said their age didn’t affect their travel abroad.

1. Why did Hazelip go to Zambia?
A.To meet Hamby.B.To run a project.
C.To live out a wish.D.To train herself.
2. What made Hamby and Hazelip become friends?
A.Their shared interest.B.Their loss of a loved one.
C.Their unique experiences.D.Their commitment to help.
3. What do we know about the two’s trip around the world?
A.It took them four years to finish it.
B.They met with some troubles on the trip.
C.It made them not like traveling any longer.
D.They joined in motorcycle races along the way.
4. What does Hamby and Hazelip’s trip suggest?
A.One is never too old to make friends.B.Life is a journey full of adventures.
C.Getting old helps experience adventure.D.Adventure doesn’t have an age limit.

A Hearty Welcome

Chase counted his new year gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two.”

“Do you have one for everyone in your class?” Mom asked.

“Yep!” Chase said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”

When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Robins and looked around shyly.

“This is Eva,” said Ms. Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today? “Chase raised his hand since he liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.

“Thanks, Chase, “Ms. Robins said. “Now let’s get down to our work.”

That’s when Chase realized he didn’t have a new year gift for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad about that.

At a break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Eva had brought a packed lunch. so Chase showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table.

While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the new year gifts they exchanged. This won’t be a New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts. But as he sat down at his table, an idea flooded into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering.

When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms. Robins about their plan. Ms. Robins smiled. “That’s very thoughtful, “she said. “Let’s go for it.”

It was math time, so Chase invited Eva to study with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back to the room so she wouldn’t notice.

Lucky

Teresa, a gentle, soft-spoken woman of seventy, had always managed to view the world with a child’s sense of wonderment. She greeted the dawn of each new day with the brightness of the sun itself and found joy in the smallest of things.

One day while out crossing the road in front of her home, Teresa had been injured in a hit-and-run. The driver left the woman in severe pain, When the mailman found her unconscious nearly an hour later, her injured leg had been bleeding heavily. She’d made it to the hospital just in time and later, the doctor had told Teresa she was lucky to be alive.

Returning home, Teresa didn't feel so lucky. Before the accident, the elderly woman had always been grateful that she was healthy for her age. Now just getting the daily mail required a huge effort. An old woman with nothing to do and nowhere to go, Teresa felt frightened, alone and defeated for the first time in her life.

When Teresa’s friend Vera came to pick her up for her checkup at the medical center, she hardly recognized her old friend. Teresa’s soft brown eyes held a deep sadness.

They were a little early for Teresa’s appointment, so to try to cheer up Teresa, Vera took a longer, more scenic route. They were stopped at a red light when Teresa suddenly shouted in terror. “Look at that cat! It’s trying to run across the street!”

Vera looked up to see a small black-and-white cat bounding(跳) out into the middle of traffic. Both women screamed as they saw one car, then another, and finally a third, hit the cat,The cat lay without moving, its small body flung(猛扔) into the grass. Cars slowed, but no one stopped to help.
