A Christmas Goose Kept Them Warm

This late in December, my younger brother, Buddy Earl, and I were on an important mission: Go to Uncle Tommie’s place and get a goose. The hike over Little Mountain and back to get there would be worth it. Uncle Tommie raised the best geese around, and he’d offered to give us one for Christmas dinner.

Dark clouds were gathering in the sky above and a cold wind came in from the north. The snow would be falling soon enough. Uncle Tommie met us at the door with a worried expression. “I’m not rushing you boys off, ” he said, “but the way the wind is picking up, you better get the goose and head for home. ”

I didn’t argue. Having scooped(迅速抱住)up a goose in the yard and held him tightly under my arm, I said a quick thank you and goodbye. Buddy and I had what we came for: the best Christmas dinner ever. A light snow started as we began climbing up Little Mountain. We didn’t talk for a while. The snow came down harder and the wind seemed to blow straight through my coat. I stroked(轻抚)the goose’s head and said , “I wish we had feathers to keep us warm like you, or heavier coats.”

The goose hid his head closer to his feathered body. By the time we reached the top of the mountain, both Buddy Earl and I were in horror. We could barely see through the snow spinning (旋转)around us. Thunder crashed and flashes of lightning made the trees appear as giant monsters reaching out with fingers.

“Doug, I'm freezing,” Buddy Earl said. “I think we should go back.” But we were closer to home than to Uncle Tommie’s house. We had to push on. I was so cold, my legs getting so stiff, I honestly wondered if we would make it.

I grasped Uncle Tommie’ s goose closer to my chest. That bird was the only thing warm about me.

5 . Sometimes it takes a crisis (危机) to bring friends together. When Hurricane (飓风) Maria went through the island of Cayo Santiago in 2017, the monkeys living there became kinder toward each other, according to a study published in the journal Current Biology.

The findings show the monkeys made more friends and became more patient to one another. Although the hurricane destroyed two-thirds of the plants on the “Monkey Island”, the increased competition for resources caused the monkeys to become more amicable, which helped them widen their friendship circles.

“We expected the monkeys would use their closest partners to deal with the destruction of the hurricane and so would strengthen their existing relationships,” said lead author Testard.

But that was not what happened. Instead, the monkeys built new relationships, rather than strengthening their old ones, which surprised the researchers. Monkeys that were the most lonely before the storm increased social connections the most afterward. The study showed that monkeys often befriended the friends of their friends. This “easy” way to making friends is often mirrored in human society.

The findings could also indicate how people might deal with the increasing threat of climate change. The monkeys are close evolutionary relatives to humans and share many features of their biology and behavior with human beings. The climate crisis has increased the likelihood of extreme weather events and natural disasters. Humans can learn a thing or two from studying how the monkeys cope with the unpleasant effects of climate change.

The main takeaway the study offers humans: go beyond your close-knit circle of friends and form a broader social network to survive tough times. “Our best friends can give us many things. But sometimes, what we need is a social network where everyone is just friendly enough,” Testard says.

1. What does the underlined word “amicable” probably mean?
A.Attacking.B.Frightening.C.Friendly.D.Energetic.
2. What shocked researchers about the monkeys in crisis?
A.They shared the limited resources.B.They took advantage of old bonds.
C.They established new relationships.D.Isolated monkeys were most popular.
3. What does the last paragraph focus on about the study?
A.Its process.B.Its result.C.Its purpose.D.Its significance.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Ups and Downs of the Monkey Island
B.Connection between Humans and Monkeys
C.A Crisis Leads to New Monkey Friendships
D.Learn from Monkeys for Broader Social Network

A Midnight Rescue

It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers. Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight. It was urgent so there was no time to hesitate. They headed into the forest.

The forest was black and silent. A little way into it they reached a fork in the earth path. Harry and David took the left path. They walked in silence, their eyes on the ground, watching out for the traps like big pits(坑)set by the illegal hunters. Every now and then a ray of moonlight through the branches above lit a spot of scarlet(猩红的)blood on the fallen leaves.

David saw that Harry looked very worried, asking, "Could Unicorn be hurt that badly?" Harry answered, "If we can't find it as soon as possible, it doesn't stand much chance to survive." Of course, Unicorn was not the animal in fairy tales but the nickname of a 3-year-old elephant, the last wild elephant in this forest. The nickname was given by the biodiversity rescuers who were protecting every member in this forest. They knew Unicorn was obedient and not afraid of human beings and that sometimes put it in danger. "Without it, the forest was not complete. Those illegal hunters should be thrown into prison." Harry thought, carrying his first aid kit(急救箱)on his back and walking forward with his flashlight.

It seemed that thick fog would come at any time, which would increase the danger. Harry hurried into the heart of the forest with David. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper. There were blood splashes(血迹)on the roots of a tree, as though the poor creature had been struggling around in pain close by. "We must hurry up", said Harry.

7 . Phil Wise’s heart raced as he opened one of the transport tubes. He and a team of scientists stepped back as a young Tasmanian devil(袋獾) named Oddity came out. Oddity took a cautious look around and then ran into the forest on Maria Island.

Wise is a wildlife biologist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, monitor their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Because a rare disease is reducing the number of devils, Oddity and 14 others were raised on a preserve and then brought to Maria Island to be released into the wild.

Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They are important to the ecosystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, endangering the species. The goal of the scientists who released Oddity and the others was to create a population of disease-free Tasmanian devils on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife preserves.

The scientists chose Maria Island for the release because there is no DFTD there. It is separated from mainland Tasmania by the ocean. Devils from the rest of Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease from spreading.

Wise and his fellow scientists monitored Oddity and the 14 other Tasmanian devils. The animals did so well that 13 more devils were released. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. Scientists are now figuring out their next move. According to Wise, the focus will soon shift to moving some of the healthy devils back to mainland Tasmania.

Wise says he is “extremely happy to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD. It is the ultimate aim of all who work to conserve threatened species.”

1. Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils like Oddity?
A.To prevent DFTD killing them out.B.To find out a treatment for DFTD.
C.To control the DFTD spread in zoos.D.To protect Maria Island from DFTD.
2. What probably made Maria Island chosen for the release?
A.Its wildlife diversity.B.Its geographic location.
C.Its natural resources.D.Its improved ecosystem.
3. How was the released Tasmanian devils’ life?
A.Their safety was uncertain.B.Their number was going up.
C.They hardly enjoyed freedom.D.They recovered from DFTD.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.A program studying Tasmanian devils.B.A disease threatening Tasmanian devils.
C.A measure to save Tasmanian devils.D.A habitat of wild Tasmanian devils.

It had been a few years since I had last volunteered in an old people's home, and this time I was looking for a new assignment. I decided to go to my local animal shelter because I love animals, especially dogs. After printing off the application, I remembered clearly ticking off (勾选) the "dog" box before I posted it.

A few weeks later, a lady called to ask if I was still interested. Then she told me they had an opening (空缺) for a cat reader. My mind started to race. What did she say? A cat reader? Did I hear her correctly? "There has been a mistake," I explained. "I checked the dog box."

I was familiar with children reading to dogs to improve their reading skills—but why would I read to a cat? The woman explained that the cats had been rescued from abusive situations, and they needed socializing before they could be adopted. Having a person read to them allowed them to share a space with someone who was non-threatening. They were free to walk in the room and do what they liked while I was reading. I had had some reading experiences as a volunteer before. So I decided to take on the task.

The first four weeks were uneventful. Most weeks, there was just one cat in the room. On one occasion, there were three, and another time two, but that was because they were found together. I did my thing, and the cats did theirs. Beyond saying "Hi" when I entered, I made no effort to touch them. If they wanted my attention, I assumed that they would let me know.

Then I met a cat named Selena. The first time I entered the room, she rushed towards me. She sat next to me. And when I read, she acted like she wanted to put her head on my lap. I thought she liked me and both of us enjoyed the time.

9 . For the first time in 100 years, the endangered California condor (秃鹰) will return to the Pacific Northwest. As the largest lying land bird, the California condor was once in a difficult situation of extinction, but now has made noticeable steps towards recovery.

California condors prehistorically lived from California to Florida. By the mid-20th century, condor population had decreased due to illegal hunting. In 1967, the California condor was listed as endangered with a population of 50 to 60. Fifteen years later, only 23 condors survived worldwide. By 1987, all remaining wild condors had been placed into a breeding program. Thus, a recovery program began. As a result of excellent reintroduction efforts, there are now over 300 California condors in the wild in America.

The return of condors to the skies is a key step towards the recovery of the beautiful scenery. These creatures are essential members of their ecosystems and play a very important role in the cultural beliefs of the Yurok Tribe. Because condors have an irreplaceable place in their culture, the Yurok Tribe has led this reintroduction effort and completed a great deal of work over the past twelve years.

Recently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Park Service, and the Yurok Tribe came together to announce a final rule. This rule will help to facilitate the creation of a new California condor release place for the reintroduction of condors to Yurok Ancestral Territory and Redwood National and State Parks. Considering the date of the completion of the condor release place may be ahead of schedule, the actual release of condors would be spring of 2022.

Steve Mietz, head of Redwood National and State Parks said, "We will continue to work with our partners in condor recovery. Tourists can visit the tallest trees in our parks while watching the largest birds in the world fly overhead."

1. What happened to California condors in the 20th century?
A.Their population decreased.
B.They were listed as rare animals.
C.They changed their habitats.
D.There were only 23 condors in California.
2. Why does the Yurok Tribe make efforts to recover condors?
A.Condors are a key part of beautiful scenery.
B.Condors play an essential role in their culture.
C.They rely on condors to study the ecosystem.
D.Condors are the tribe's main income source.
3. What does the underlined word "facilitate" mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Protect.B.Build.C.Design.D.Speed.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Saving the endangered California condors.
B.California is working to protect condors' habitat.
C.Condors are returning to Northern California skies.
D.Seeing condors back again after a hundred years.

It was a pleasant Sunday as John wandered the garden of his uncle’s house. His parents had gone to Delhi.

“Your final examination is just a few months away.” John’s father had said. “We want you to stay with Uncle Tim, complete your exams and join us in Delhi.” Uncle Tim was John’s father’s cousin. He had a little dog called Oliver.

From the first day John realized that Oliver was unhappy in the house. He was not given his meals on time, nor was he taken for a walk. Oliver was shouted at and abused all day. “Your uncle bought Oliver so that the dog could protect his house from thieves but actually he doesn’t love him”, the gardener told John one day.

John felt sad. At night he could hear Oliver whimpering in the cold. “Why don’t you make a coat for your pet?” John paused and said, “He feels cold”. His uncle answered, “I have much better things to do”.

One day John went out for a walk with Oliver, when a fierce storm started. John ran to take shelter in a sweet shop. It was only after a few minutes that he realized that Oliver was not with him. “The storm separated us”, John was sad, telling his uncle. “I searched the entire place with the help of the sweet shop owner but I couldn’t find him.” John’s uncle posted an advertisement in the paper. After all he had spent a lot of money buying Oliver and did not want to lose him.

It was a half-hour ride by bus. The middle aged lady who greeted Oliver was a motherly sort of a woman. She and her husband had answered John’s uncle’s advertisement in the paper. Since John’s uncle was out on an official tour, John had been sent to check on the dog. “He is asleep,” the lady said. “Come and have a look, we love him so much that he is just like our dead dog, Sheela.”
