1 . The winter migration (迁徙) season has arrived. With the cold wave heading down south, migratory birds from faraway places such as Siberia have begun to arrive at Dongting Lake, central China for the winter.

Dongting Lake in central China’s Hunan Province is the country’s second-largest freshwater lake. When the temperature rises after a short cold time, locals call the 10th lunar month “Indian summer.” During this time, the lake’s water level drops and sedges (莎草) grow, allowing wintering birds to plentiful food.

Song Yucheng, deputy chief engineer of East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve, is proud of their protection work. According to him, the Eurasian spoonbills are the first to arrive at the heart of East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve. They line up and use sideways sweeps of their beaks to filter (过滤) out tiny fish and shrimp. When they fly to another spot looking for food, people can only see the vast expanse of a white sky.

“Now the weather is also very good, the sky is very clear, with green grass, clear water and white spoonbills wandering for hunting. It’s a beautiful picture of nature,” said Song.

For the villagers living in the East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve, their farm fields are still full of busy and active fellows after harvest because there are about 100 swans settled down there. To provide these birds with an quiet and safe environment, the local government has stopped the vehicles and visitors from entering the area.

“Firecrackers are not allowed, and loud noises are also not allowed in the surrounding area,” said Long Yong, a villager from the Hehua Village, citing the local government.

1. The birds migrate to Dongting Lake not because _____.
A.Siberia is cold at winter.
B.It is the nearest to Siberia.
C.The protection work there goes great.
D.The warm temperature and plentiful food.
2. The underlined words in paragraph 3 is a name of ___.
A.an engineerB.a kind of bird
C.migration destinationD.birds food
3. From what Song said, we can infer_____.
A.Weather is always good here.
B.More birds are coming here.
C.The environment is beautiful here.
D.It’s good to draw pictures here.
4. The last two paragraphs tell about____.
A.government measures
B.fields harvest

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At the cafeteria table, I overheard my new colleague say, “I hate going home tonight, because we have to get rid of our dog.” I said, “Oh, no! Is your dog ill?” She replied, “No, she’s fine, just not a fit for our family. No one wants her, so it’s best we give it away.”

Coming from a family whose home could be a petting zoo, I was shocked to think that people could be so heartless. Worried by this dog’s fate, I asked my new co-worker a few questions. She shared that the dog’s name was Lady. She was a German Shepherd and had been trained for a year and a half as a guide dog for the blind. Unfortunately, Lady failed her final test because she demanded too many hugs after completing her tasks. I begged the woman to give me a little time to reach out to my mom as we would consider taking her. With my talent for dramatic storytelling and my mom’s compassionate heart, I knew Lady would have a home with us.

After work, I drove to pick up Lady. An old woman greeted me at the door, leading me to the kitchen. There sat the beautiful but very thin dog, sitting in the corner licking and scratching her right paw. “She did that to herself,” the woman said as she pointed to the injured paw. She continued, “That dog is hopeless!” The woman then took a broom and pushed the dog to stand. Lady had tears in her eyes when I led her outside.

There were no goodbyes from this family, just a sense of relief that Lady was no longer their problem. I sat on the sidewalk with her and introduced myself. For me, it was love at first sight. She had perfect markings, a delicate, beautiful face, but the saddest eyes. “Lady,” I said, “I’m taking you to your new home with my family who will always love you. Please give us a chance.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一种新开发出来的墙纸式供暖系统,包括其运行原理、使用优势和发展方向等信息。

4 . Homes are usually warmed with radiators (暖气片). Some homes are warmed by floor heating. Now, a new way of heating is being developed by using the “wallpaper” on your walls. This wallpaper is not decorative. It actually goes under and not over the wall — electrically heats a room. And this type of heating technology heats objects, even people, instead of the air and this helps you feel warmer.

The electric heating panels which are hidden in the wall are connected to the main electrical panels of your home. Each room can be used independently through an app so you do not have to heat unused rooms. It takes around 20 minutes to heat a room.

With rising prices for home heating, the panels seemed like the right way to go. “It makes me happy that I don’t rely on gas.” Kris Bilski, an early user, said. An estimated 23 million homes in the UK are connected to the gas grid (网) but the government wants to phase out gas-fired boilers by 2035. Home heating is responsible for 17 percent of greenhouse gas emissions so removing fossil fuel-based heating will help the environment.

The new electric heating systems are available for private homes and the company is currently testing the new technology in public housing in some cities. The versions being tested can be installed (安装) while people are still living in the apartment so it makes installation a lot easier.

Heating your home with this type of technology does not heat your water so an additional heating system is required but an energy efficient heater can be used.

While the wallpaper is greener, electricity in the UK is very costly so it is not an economic way to heat homes unless there is a renewable energy source like solar panels used. Still, reducing the dependance on fossil fuels will go a long way to green the UK and help the country meet its climate targets.

1. What is special about the wallpaper compared with radiators?
A.It is decorative.B.It is traditional.
C.It is unseen.D.It is more efficient.
2. What does the underlined phrase “phase out” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Stop using.B.Improve greatly.
C.Restore gradually.D.Finish developing.
3. What is one of the advantages of wallpaper heating system?
A.It looks beautiful.B.It’s easy to be fitted.
C.It heats up instantly.D.It fits all buildings.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of this wallpaper heating system in the UK?
A.Skeptical.B.Optimistic.
C.Enthusiastic.D.Disapproving.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了在人们当今的生活中污染是最严重的问题,以及为了减少污染,我们该如何做。

6 . Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines.

Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.

Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.

Many countries are making rules to fight against pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, and they mustn't let dirty smoke go into the air.

We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and do not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.

Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight against pollution.

9 . Water conservation (保护) means using limited water supply wisely and caring for it properly. Since each of us depends on water to support life, it is our responsibility to learn more about water conservation and how we can help keep our sources pure and safe for generations to come. Below are some of the main reasons why it's important to conserve water.

It diminishes the effects of drought and water shortages. Even though our need for fresh water is always increasing because of population and industry growth, the supply we have stays the same. Even though water eventually returns to the Earth through the water cycle, it's not always returned to the same spot, or with the same quantity and quality. By reducing the amount of water we use, we can better protect against future drought years.

It guards against a series of social problems. Failing to conserve water, can eventually lead to a lack of water supply, which can have bad results. These include rising costs, reduced food supplies, health dangers, and even political conflict. Many fears have been expressed that water wars will occur in the future as water is becoming scarcer and scarcer (更稀缺的).

It helps to protect our environment. Reducing our water usage reduces the energy required to process water and deliver it to businesses, farms, and communities, which, in turn, helps to reduce pollution and conserve energy.

It builds safe and beautiful communities. Hospitals, gas stations, health clubs, gyms, and restaurants all require large amounts of water to provide services for communities. Reducing our usage of water means that these services can continue to be provided. Much of our fresh water can also be used for beautifying our surroundings — trees, flowers, vegetable gardens, as well as filling public fountains.

Water conservation requires effort, and every little bit helps. Don't think that what you do does not matter. We can all make changes in our lifestyles to reduce our water usage. The trick is making water conservation a way of life — not just something we think about once in a while.

1. What does Paragraph 1 mainly show?
A.Conserving water is very difficult.
B.Everyone should learn to conserve water.
C.Many people don't care about water waste.
D.Water shortage will influence the later generations.

A.Proves.B.Reduces.

C.Why Should We Conserve Water in Our Daily Life?

10 . The great avenues are quiet, and the shops are closed. There’s the smell of fresh bread from a bakery somewhere. It would be hard to say which time of the day in Paris I prefer but this is probably it. Soon the streets will be full of people and traffic. As with most other cities, you see the real Paris when the city wakes up.

There is, however, another part of Paris which is silent and free from people 24 hours a day. Under the city are hundreds of kilometers of abandoned tunnels. During the 19th century, Paris needed more stones for buildings above the ground, so people dug tunnels beneath the city. After that, many farmers grew mushrooms in them. During World War II, the French soldiers also used them. Since the 1970s, many young people have started spending days and nights below the city in these tunnels. It’s now a place for parties, theatre performances, art galleries – anything goes!A “normal” tourist can visit some parts of Paris’s tunnel system, such as the underground cemetery, where you can see the bones of about six million Parisians. The bodies came from cemeteries above the ground two centuries ago when the city needed more space.

However, people are not allowed to enter other parts of the tunnel system. It’s very dangerous because some tunnels might collapse and people will be trapped below. Nevertheless, there are people who will take you to visit them. I have found two “unofficial” tour guides who take me through many tunnels. After a couple of hours we arrive at a room which isn’t on any map. The room is comfortable and clean with a table and chairs and a bed. The guide tells me there are many other places like this. “Many people come down here to party, some people to paint.... We do what we want here.”

1. What is the writer’s favourite time of the day in Paris?
A.Early morning.B.Midday.
C.Early evening.D.Late night.
2. Why did French people first start digging tunnels?
A.For many housing.B.For building stones.
C.For entertainment.D.For growing mushrooms.
3. The underlined word “collapse” in the last paragraph in closest in meaning to         .
A.disappearB.closeC.fall downD.blow up
4. Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage?
A.Tunnels under ParisB.Travel around Paris
C.The history of ParisD.The best-known tourist attraction in Paris
