1 . Teaching Your Dog Tricks
Dogs are social animals who enjoy spending time with us, and training is a wonderful way to create quality moments together. Teaching tricks provides a great mental workout for your dog.
Start the moment you bring your puppy home. Most puppies are very enthusiastic and eager to learn, and you will be amazed at what you can achieve together if you commit to regular training.
Train when you are in a good mood. Training should be a positive experience for your dog, so only train when you are not tired or distracted (分心). Put your mobile phone away so you can focus without distractions.

2 . It is a tough time to be a tree. Earth has lost a third of its forests over the past 10, 000 years — half of that just since 1900. We logged them for wood. We cut them to make way for farms and cattle. We cleared land to build homes and roads. Although deforestation has decreased globally from its peak in the 1980s, trends vary by region. In Indonesia, which had been cutting down forests for oil palm plantations (棕榈种植园), primary forest loss has declined since 2016. From August 2020 to July 2021, the Brazilian Amazon lost 5,000 square miles of rainforest, a 22 percent increase over the previous year. Since 1990, we’ve cut down more forest globally than there is forest in the United States.
Trees are growing faster as they absorb extra CO2. That “greening” of the planet has so far helped slow climate change. But climate change is killing trees. And what has made forest scientists increasingly uneasy is the quickening pace of extreme events — fire, more powerful storms, and, most notably, severe heat and drought, which can worsen the effects of all the rest, shifting forests that have been around since the last ice age to entirely new states.
Climate change still poses less of a threat to forests than logging and land clearing, but the threat is growing fast. Satellite data show that Earth’s tree-covered area actually expanded from 1982 to 2016 by 7 percent, an area larger than Mexico. But that doesn’t mean forests are doing fine. The data don’t distinguish between natural forests and industrial tree farms, such as the millions of palm, eucalyptus (桉树), and pine trees planted as crops while rainforest is cleared. Also, the data don’t show which forests were lost to chain saws and which were killed by climate-related events.

4 . How to Start Gardening
If you are feeling the itch(渴望) to get a green thumb and start gardening, we cannot blame you.
The first step is to come up with an idea of what you want to grow. If you are going to grow a crop, make sure it is something you will eat. You also need to make sure your area has the right climate, and that you are planting at the right time. Most plants will require planting in spring, but sometime planting in the fall,so make sure you know the life cycle of a plant and when you should plant it.
After you have chosen what you want to grow, picture your garden or even draw up a plan. Look at what will go where depending on how much sun it needs.
Testing your soil is necessary.
A.Choose the right seeds and then plant them. |
B.It has so many benefits and it is hard to resist. |
C.You should also look up a seeding calendar as well. |
D.Consider the sun in the sky above your garden as well. |
E.And keep the kids’ play area away from the planting areas. |
F.Many green hands to the gardening scene do not know this. |
G.It is also worth looking into what grows well in your local area and what doesn’t. |
“I just couldn’t stop thinking about her.” That’s what a nine-year-old cat lover Sutter Rowse said after he saw a story about a stray cat (流浪猫) in his community of Williams Lake, British Columbia, which was in need of surgery (外科手术). He decided to do something about it and raise funds to help the cat. Now, that cat is much better and has a brand new owner, all thanks to Sutter’s hard work and clever thinking.
Online, Sutter came across a story posted by his local animal shelter. The BC SPCA explained that the cat — which was named Hazel by shelter staff — had been found at the transfer station in Anahim Lake, about fourhours west of Sutter’s home. A transfer station is a place where garbage and other waste are sorted. Shelter staff said Hazel was looking for food there.
They later discovered that the back part of it was injured. The head of her femur (股骨) was broken and died — meaning the death of cells in some part of the body — had set in, so Hazel would need surgery to get better. SPCA staff put out a call to the community to raise funds for it, and that’s when Sutter got to work. Sutter thought up a good idea: making use of the power of cinnamon buns (肉桂面包). He knew if there was anything that could get community members to empty their pockets, it would be this sweet treat: cinnamon buns.
He and his mum, Leslie Rowse, got to workbaking, and his mum posted about Sutter’s efforts on a social media page for his local community. Around 15 dozen (or 180) cinnamon buns later, Sutter had raised $850. His mum dropped off the money at the shelter, and Hazel was able to start her surgeries.
Following Hazel’s surgeries and several days of recovery, Sutter’s mum was ready to share some good news. Sutter’s mum told Sutter that Hazel had a new owner. She asked him to guess who that owner was. “I guessed us! And I was right,” said Sutter.

The Dog Who Saved Our Family
We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines five years ago. He was a standard poodle(狮子狗)born on Valentine’s Day in 2017, and came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from an out-of-state raiser who posted the news on the social network. Our only request was that he have a calm behavior, able to bear the pushing and hugging of our eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.
We were a sweet little family:me,my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I’d felt as if we wouldn’t really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband worked in a business company and had to travel some 200 days a year for his job, and I knew I’d feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.
When we opened the box, the last piece of our puzzle fell into place. With his black hair and intelligent eyes,Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm of my hand, his big paws lapping over the sides. He was also a little bit scared. As I pulled him close,I felt his heart pound and wondered if we’d done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next and who should have the right to take a bath for him.
Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his Kong toy or roll around the living room floor. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.

As is known to us all, cats are difficult to track. On nearly a weekly basis, my owe cats disappear somewhere in the house, hiding while I fruitlessly tear the place apart and ignore the sinking fear that they may have gotten outside. After some period of time, they just... reappear.
Thanks to a new study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, we now know that our cats likely never have the same worries about us. Cats, the study suggests, are able to track their owners’ whereabouts, using only the sound of the human voice.
While researchers have long known that cats possess object permanence, or the ability to recognize the existence of an object even when it is no longer immediately seen, the real-time “tracking” capabilities shown in this study open up new ways to study cats’ minds.
“Fewer research reports have been made about cats’ mental and behavioral mechanisms (机能)than those about dogs’?, Saho Takagi, a doctoral student at Kyoto University and the lead author of the study, wrote in an email to Inside Science.
In a series of three experiments, Takagi’s team observed how cats placed in a familiar room responded to a series of sounds played from speakers located both inside and outside of the room. The first experiment used human voices, the second used the sounds of other cats, and the third used electronic sounds. Takagi found that while the cats had no strong reaction to the electronic or cat sounds, hearing an owner’s voice without the owner present in the room left the cats noticeably confused. The sound of an unfamiliar human’s voice also caused confusion, though not as much as a cat’s owner did.
