文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了在农场动物中大量使用抗生素的负面影响。

4 . A new study has found the amount of antibiotics (抗生素) given to farm animals is expected to increase by two-thirds over the next 15 years. Researchers are linking the growing dependence on the drugs to the increasing need for meat, milk and eggs. However, the drugs could quicken the development of antibiotic-resistant infections (感染). Such infections are already a major public health concern in the United States.

The World Health Organization notes that when people stop living in poverty (贫困), the first thing they want to do is eat better, rather than earn more money. For most people, that means their diet should contain more meat. With the rapid development of Asia, people there are eating nearly four times as much meat, milk and other milk products as they did 50 years ago.

To meet the need, farmers have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, the easiest way to deal with some of the problems of crowding is to give them antibiotics. It’s clear that antibiotics help animals stay healthy in a crowded environment and grow faster. But bacteria can develop resistance to the drugs gradually.

Nowadays, doctors find antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer work. The bacteria have learned ways to fight against the drugs. The heavy use of antibiotics in animals is responsible for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. In the United States, at least two million people get drug-resistant infections each year and at least 23,000 die from an infection.

Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.

1. What accounts for the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals?
A.The desire for new drugs.B.The less effective antibiotics.
C.The outdated farm technology.D.The need for more various foods.
2. What do most people want to do first when they get rid of poverty according to WHO?
A.Make a lot of money.B.Focus more on health.
C.Have more meat in their diet.D.Live in a better environment.
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Antibiotics do harm to animals.
B.Antibiotics make animals more nutritious.
C.Antibiotics are used heavily in Europe.
D.Antibiotic-resistant infections spread to people.
4. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.A new way of raising farm animals.
B.The advantages of using antibiotics.
C.The reason for banning the use of antibiotics.
D.The negative effects of the heavy use of antibiotics in farm animals.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了耶鲁大学公共卫生学院的研究人员领导的一项新研究发现,空气污染可能会对标准化考试成绩产生负面影响。文章介绍了研究的具体发现以及相应的应对建议。

6 . A new study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health finds air pollution may negatively impact standardized test scores. Using data from the North Carolina Education Research Data Center, the researchers tracked 2.8 million public school students in North Carolina from 2001 to 2018 and measured their exposure to PM2.5 found in polluted air. While previous research has shown negative effects on academic performance, it has relied on relatively small or less representative samples. “The biggest strength of this study is that we tracked every student in North Carolina in those years, for the whole time period that they were in the public schools,” said Emma Zang, coauthor of the study.

The study also finds that test scores of ethnic minorities and girls are disproportionately (不成比例地) impacted by PM2.5 levels. “Females and ethnic minorities face sexism and racism,” said Zang. “There are a lot of policies that are not friendly towards them. So, when they’re exposed to the same level of air pollution, they don’t have the resources to lessen the negative influences.” More privileged populations, however, might have more resources that allow them to live in a better environment, such as in houses with air purifiers.

“The level of PM2.5 pollution in the US is relatively low, but students living in areas below the current air quality standard of annual PM2.5 concentration are still negatively impacted by air pollution when it comes to their test scores,” said Zang. “We should aim to strengthen the annual PM2.5 standard to better protect our children.”

Air pollution is known to contribute to disease and death, and it also negatively affects students’ academic performance even at low levels of pollution. The subsequent studies, the researchers said, would involve looking at whether the findings hold true in different areas, and also the reasons behind the ethnic and sexual differences.

1. What’s the greatest advantage of the study?
A.Tracking each student for 18 years.B.Collecting more comprehensive data.
C.Measuring students’ PM2.5 exposure precisely.D.Building links between air pollution and test scores.
2. According to Zang, ethnic minorities and girls ________.
A.benefit from current policies on PM2.5 pollution
B.have the lowest test scores due to their identities
C.lack resources to reduce the impact of air pollution
D.suffer from educational inequalities owing to their background
3. What’s Zang doing in paragraph 3?
A.Offering a suggestion.B.Raising a doubt.
C.Making a comparison.D.Giving a prediction.
4. What might be the focus of the follow-up studies?
A.Applicability of the findings to other regions.B.Ways to address racial and sexual differences.
C.Long-term impacts of air pollution on children.D.Establishment of PM2.5 standard fit for children.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。来自伦敦的艺术家Josh Gluckstein,用现成的材料制作动物雕塑。文章主要介绍了他这样做的原因和意义。

8 . Since childhood, London-based artist Josh Gluckstein has been fascinated by the incredible diversity of our planet’s wildlife and inspired to make sculptures of animals from found materials. He often uses abandoned or recycled materials like clothing from junk shops or wood from old furniture. An important aspect of his practice is concern for the environment. “I have traveled through Asia, Latin America and East Africa, and have been fortunate enough to have some incredible wildlife encounters,” he says. “However, on my travels, even in the most remote locations, I was shocked by the huge amounts of plastic waste.”

Mach of the garbage that washes up on shorelines around the world is due to an unregulated (未受监管的) system in which richer countries export waste to developing countries because it is often cheaper than developing better infrastructures (基础设施) to handle it. Many of the thousands of shipping containers exported each year are often dumped illegally.

“I remember going to the Galapagos Islands and visiting a beach famous for a large population of sea lions. It was indeed incredible to see them in the wild, but on every inch of sand not covered by sea lions, there were plastic bottles and cans. It was a heartbreaking sight. I knew I wanted to create artworks that didn’t create waste or harm our planet,” Gluckstein says.

Gluckstein hopes his works will raise people’s awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species. His new series called “Gold” focuses on illegally hunted animals by applying gold leaves to their bodies. He plans to donate some of the sales of his sculptures to the world Wide Fund for Nature.

1. What do Gluckstein’s sculptures focus on?
A.Fashion.B.Animals.C.Sports.D.Travel.
2. What does the underlined word “dumped” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Poured,B.Protected.C.Sold.D.Used.
3. What does Gluckstein mainly want to say in paragraph 3?
A.Where he has toured.B.How sad he was.
C.How he found sea lions.D.Why he created eco-friendly sculptures.
4. What does Gluckstein expect of his works?
A.They can bring him financial benefits.
B.They can make him famous as an artist.
C.They can help protect endangered animals.
D.They can improve people’s ability to appreciate art.

Second, many pigeons were     7     (illegal) shot and eaten because they were good to eat. At that time, the authorities didn’t make hunting laws to protect     8     (endanger) species, so the extinction was happening     9     (fast) than ever before.

Later, people realized the problem. Up to now, many measures     10     (take) by government to protect wildlife from extinction.
