文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。 文章讲述一个美国人对中国山水和人文的依恋。

2 . Having grown up in northern Arizona with the immortal Grand Canyon and the iron red plateaus of Sedona in my backyard, I believed that the southwestern state is home to the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. Towering mountain titans, a cozy valley and an infinite blue sky promised fantastic potential for exploration. For me, no newly discovered sights or foreign landscapes can compare with its beauty.

That is, until I was invited to explore Guizhou province by the China Storyteller Partnerships Tour. Had someone vividly described how beautiful Guizhou can be in poetic detail, they would not have done it exactly. There is no substitute for seeing with one’s own eyes. I will attempt to do so.

During my trip around the city of Xingyi, in Guizhou, I saw the artwork of the Bouyei ethnic group. They use dyes produced from local plants to make clothing of striking blues and greens. Local elders still practice weaving with artful wooden machines and pass that tradition on to their grandchildren.

My father used to drag my brothers and me on yearly fishing trips around Arizona. We would compete to catch the largest fish, and in the mornings, Dad would cook us a basic breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast. I sat in a small boat in the middle of the lake, with fishing pole moving slowly in my impatient hands, and held my bored tongue while my father attempted to share with me the whispers of the wind, a fish dancing on the surface of the lake or the majesty of a hawk hunting for prey overhead. On my trip to Guizhou I had the opportunity to paddle on Wanfeng lake. At one point I rested, floating at the center of the lake, listening to the spaces between silence and taking in the surrounding karst (喀斯特) mountains. I thought about my childhood, and wished I had listened more closely to my father while fishing.

I’ve lived away from Arizona for 10 long years, carving my own destiny in China. I’ve managed to build myself a family, a career, a livelihood, and various projects. I feel as though I have everything that I need. For a moment, in Guizhou, I felt home.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述白噪音对睡眠有积极影响,但还有待进一步研究证明。

3 . Have you ever found that you were able to sleep better with an air conditioner or fan running or perhaps with the sound of rain falling outside? If so, then you’re already familiar with white noise.

White noise refers to a noise that has a mixture of all the audible (听得见的) frequencies that the human ear can detect. It is a combination of all the frequencies of sound played at once. It can cover the sounds of other noises because of its various frequencies, leading many people to experience its calming effects.

Researchers have studied the effect of white noise on humans for many years, finding evidence it can reduce crying in infants and improve work performance. Many studies have also examined how white noise may affect human sleep. They found that listening to white noise positively affects sleep. For example, people living in a high-noise area of New York City fell asleep faster and spent more of their time in bed asleep while listening to white noise. In another study, listening to white noise through headphones improved sleep quality for seriously ill patients in a loud hospital room.

However, a recent analysis of multiple studies looking at white noise’s effect on sleep has produced mixed results. The researchers are doubtful about the quality of existing evidence and conclude that further research is necessary in order to widely recommend white noise as a sleep aid. They also note that in some instances, white noise can perturb a person and may affect their hearing.

Despite that, researchers are still optimistic that the steady white noise might reduce a sleeper’s sensitivity to unpredictable noises from the environment, such as transportation sounds like cars and planes, which are considered a major contributor to poor sleep.

1. Why does white noise have calming effects?
A.Because it can absorb other noises.B.Because it can help people sleep better.
C.Because it can be detected by human ears.D.Because it can cover the sounds of other noises.
2. How does the author explain the benefits of white noise?
A.By giving examples.B.By telling stories.
C.By asking questions.D.By making comparisons.
3. What does the underlined word “perturb” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Amuse.B.Calm.C.Disturb.D.Warn.
4. Which statement may researchers agree with according to the last two paragraphs?
A.White noise should be strongly recommended as a sleep aid.
B.Harmful effects of white noise have become a major concern.
C.Poor sleep will make people sensitive to the unpredictable noises.
D.More researches are needed to confirm the effect of white noise on sleep.

7 . Two baby zebra sharks were released in the Raja Ampat Regency of Indonesia earlier this year as the first step in a massive re-wilding project. The new organization, called ReShark, has joined 15 countries and 44 aquariums (水族馆) in an effort to raise zebra sharks, then release them back into the wild. ReShark aims to release 500 zebra sharks in Indonesia n waters within the next five to ten years.

Dr. Erin Meyer, Seattle Aquarium vice president of conservation programs and partnerships, told in an interview that this is just the beginning of creating a shark rebirth. “We’re just getting started in re-wilding the oceans, so we can ensure that we have a flexible, healthy, global ocean for today and for future generations,” she said.

The international organization, which today has 70 partners, aims to restore threatened and endangered sharks around the world. There are currently almost 400 species of sharks worldwide that are badly threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, according to Meyer.

The main cause of this decline is overfishing, said Meyer. “We hear a lot about people in-volving in shark fishing for their fins, but they’re also fished for their meat,” she said of sharks. Meyer added that sharks are keystone species within their ecosystems, which means their environments can break down without their keeping other species in check.

ReShark first launched in 2020, beginning with the endangered zebra shark. In parts of the world such as Indonesia, Meyer noted, zebra sharks are nearly extinct. In Raja Ampat, researchers were able to count only three zebra sharks in 15,000 hours of searching between the years 2001 and 2021, according to National Geographic. “They are also a species that aquariums have been learning about and researching while in our care for decades,” Meyer said, explaining why the species was at the top of ReShark’s preference list.

1. Why does ReShark raise zebra sharks?
A.To attract visitors to aquariums.B.To return them to the wild.
C.To get their meat.D.To get their fins.
2. How many species of sharks are endangered now?
A.About 15,000.B.Above 500.C.About 400.D.Only 3.
3. What mainly leads to the decrease of sharks?
A.Fewer conservation programs.B.A small number of aquariums.
C.The threatened ecosystem.D.Overfishing.
4. How does Meyer find their efforts?
A.Worthwhile.B.Time-consuming.C.Dangerous.D.Unpredictable.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了研究人员发现了玻璃蛙身体透明的原因以及玻璃蛙体内独特的生物学机制。

9 . Native to forests of Central and South America, glass frogs in the Centrolenidae family get their name from their skin and muscles that help them be perfectly suitable to live in their forest environment. Turn the frogs over, where the effect is the most impressive, and you’ll easily notice their hearts, livers (肝), and other body parts inside through their hyaline bellies (肚子).

And in a study published in the journal Science, researchers have discovered an amazing mechanism (机制) the animals use to become so clear.

When glass frogs go to sleep, they take in 89 percent of their brightly colored red blood cells (细胞) into sacs (液囊) in their livers, which reflect incoming light and make the frogs appear nearly unseen. With their red blood cells out of view, the frogs become twice to three times more clear — a trick scientists believe helps the animals avoid being killed and eaten by their natural enemies.

“The trick is really hard to do, because their body is full of things that take in and spread light. While many creatures in water are often found to try to become clearer to hide themselves, not many are on land,” says study co-author Jesse Delia. “Red blood cells also take in a lot of light, and we found that the frogs can actually hide themselves by packing them into the liver.”

Not only are the findings interesting, but the researchers attach great importance to them. That’s because many red blood cells in one place usually form a clot (血块), which can make the blood hard to move around and lead to a potentially life-threatening condition. But the frogs can seemingly clot and expand their red blood cells as they wish — without any negative effects. This may mean the animals already have what medical researchers have been looking for years: a biological mechanism which prevents too much bleeding while also preventing too much clotting.

1. What does the underlined word “hyaline” mean in paragraph 1?
A.See-through.B.Powerful.C.Narrow.D.Good-looking.
2. What is the new discovery about glass frogs?
A.The frogs fit in their environment better.
B.Sacs filled with red blood cells make the frogs clear.
C.Red blood cells in the frogs’ liver reflect light.
D.The frogs are able to take in a lot of bright colors.
3. What does Jesse Delia think of glass frogs’ trick?
A.Interesting.B.Unusual.C.Optimistic.D.Annoying.
4. Why do the researchers consider the findings important?
A.They help cure serious diseases.
B.They are a blessing for wild animals.
C.They can lead to advances in medicine.
D.They will prevent all clotting and bleeding.
