1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Erika and the Necklace

Erika and her little sister Beth sneaked into their mommy’s room. “I’m just going to try on some jewelry,” said Erika. She took a necklace and tried to put it on her neck. “Oh, no,” said Beth. “Mommy doesn’t like us playing with her stuff.” “Okay, you be the lookout,” instructed Erika. “Stand by the door and let me know if Mommy comes up the stairs.”

Before Beth got to the door, Bouncer, the family’s Bernedoodle dog, bounded into the room and almost knocked Erika down. The necklace went flying. It had barely hit the floor when Bouncer bit it and raced off.

“Bouncer! Bouncer!” yelled Erika. “Beth, help me get the necklace back.” The girls were hot on Bouncer’s tail. “Stop!” they yelled. Bouncer dashed down the stairs and into the living room. He stopped just long enough for the girls to get close to him. Then of he went. “Stop!” yelled Erika. “Beth, you go the other way. We’ll corner him in the dining room.”

Erika met Beth in the dining room. Sure enough, Bouncer was there waiting for them. He was down low on his front legs with his tail in the air, ready to play. “Grab him!” screamed Erika.

Just as Beth was about to grab him, Bouncer took off. He whizzed (嗖地移动) by Beth and Erika. “Stop, you troublemaker!” yelled Erika as she raced after him. The girls were getting close again, but Bouncer zoomed down the basement stairs. The girls raced after him. “I don’t see him,” said Beth. Erika scratched her head. “He’s got to be down here. He’s hiding.”

Just then Mom called to the girls. “Erika, what’s all the noise? What’s wrong? I heard you from the yard.” “Uh, oh,” whispered Erika. “Uh.. nothing’s wrong,” she shouted.

Beth dashed up the stairs. Erika heard her telling Mom everything. “That blabber mouth (多嘴的人),” said Erika under her breath.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

ALEX pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the cattails that grew around Johnson’s Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex loved it. The pond was always so alive with activity. Frogs croaked along the shore, dragonflies hunted among the cattails, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) basking(晒太阳) on sunny rocks.

Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. One week, when it was too rainy to go canoeing, he and his dad went to the library to check out books on turtles. Alex learned that turtles don’t have warm blood like people do. That’s why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.

Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be.

And then, as Alex watched, the rock started to move.

When he rode his bike up to get a closer look, he saw that it wasn’t a rock at all. It was a large turtle crawled its way across the road. It had a bony, beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail. Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.

He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a snapping turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn’t have teeth. It could even bite off someone’s finger. He stood at a distance and watched the turtle move slowly over the road.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do?

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完蔡的故事,

With two bags of cat food in her arms, Manuela couldn’t stop smiling as she walked toward the familiar shop on the corner. She was making her weekly visit to see Hussein the barber. He spotted her through the picture window of his quiet shop and burst through the door and into the sunlight. The two hurried over to the tiny food dishes lined up in the alley. Soon the sound of cat food clinked (叮当声) against the bowls and several stiff tailed cats began to appear.

Here in Turkey, there was a cultural aversion (厌恶) to cats and dogs, those who fed the animals were often scorned (轻蔑). But Hussein paid no mind to those who glared at him. He took his time in the alley, kneeling for the longest while, stroking each cat and speaking softly. Hussein was simply a man who loved with his whole heart, and in this moment, he was lost in the comfort of his family.

As the two finished up and made their way back inside the shop, Hussein’s smile faded and Manuela couldn’t help but notice that he was beginning to look rather thin. Manuela, a native of Germany, has led a volunteer animal rescue program in Turkey for the last three years, but the language came slowly. Only by chance, when a multilingual (懂多国语) friend arrived, did the room begin to darken as Hussein explained that he was about to lose his barber shop.

After decades in the same tiny room, Hussein had been told that he must leave. His little barbershop simply didn’t pay enough rent and with so few customers calling for his “old-fashioned” services, the landlord had invited in another tenant (租客)...one who wouldn’t be feeding animals outside.

Manuela’s eyes began to flood as Hussein expressed his worry for the cats he cared for. There were only seven days before Hussein would move out and Manuela feared for this very survival and for that of the animals who depended on him.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old tan-and-white rescue cat, is a homebody—and for good reason. The one time he got out his yard in Washington, DC, he managed to get stuck in a 12-metre-tall tree for two days with no food or water.

Hank’s big adventure started last November 6. Delores Bushong, his 75-year-old owner, had just returned from a farmer’s market when she realized Hank hadn’t come in for his midday snack. She called his name in alleys and streets around her home. As it got dark, she began to worry. Then she heard mewing, looked up, and spotted Hank, perched on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.

Busbong believes Hank got under a fence and then became scared by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed.

“Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but actually they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan D’Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).

Bushong now worried about getting Hank down, asked the HRA to take the lead, but it was no easy task HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help, citing safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding (脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was on a family vacation and our hotel was right beside the sea. I was reading my book by the beach one afternoon when I heard some noise nearby. Curiously, I put aside the book and joined the group of people near the edge of the sea.

I was struck by what I saw. There was a giant turtle (海龟) which was upside down! Four of its huge feet were waving crazily in the air, and its long wrinkled neck was stretching far out of its shell. A thick rope was tied around the turtle and the fisherman held onto the end of it.

Obviously, the turtle was trying to escape. Some standers-by were clicking their cameras enthusiastically, filming the exciting moment. The crowd was thrilled by the scene before them. One strongly-built man found a piece of wood on the sand, carried it towards the turtle and started pushing the turtle’s head with it. When the end of the wood touched the turtle’s head, the turtle took it into its mouth and chewed it up in an instant.

“Wow!” the crowd shouted. “Did you see that? I’m glad it wasn’t my arm!” a person from the crowd exclaimed. “Wait till it gets sold and becomes turtle meat!” another joked and the crowd laughed.

Suddenly, I heard a boy’s screaming, “Cease torturing (折磨) it! Get away from the turtle!” We all turned and saw a boy and his father running toward where we were. “All of you are cruel for just standing there and doing nothing to save the turtle! Would you like it if you were forcefully taken away from your homes to be sold and tortured? Animals deserve to be treated with kindness too!” the boy shouted at the group of adults standing on the beach. I sensed a slight change of mood in the crowd-a mixture of unease and anger.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As an enthusiastic climber, I would make an annual trip to the peak of Mount of the Holy Cross. This year, my new running partner, Merle—a young and athletic dog—would climb with me. I hadn’t thought twice about taking Merle; actually, I’d expected him to beat me to the peak.

Before setting off, I filled my pack with water bottles, dry food, and a can of fish. Having put the collar—with his name and my phone numbers—on Merle, I started my big adventure with him. Several hours later, when we were rushing towards the peak, Merle still seemed energetic and I also felt energized by the clear mountain air.

When reaching the peak, I heard a short bark but thought Merle would be seconds behind me. He was always incredibly bonded to me. I shot a photo of the view, called out to the dog and headed back down the trail. However, Merle was nowhere to be seen.

“Merle! Merle!” I called. “Where are you?” I felt a tickle of panic in my throat as I still saw no signs of him.

Then I saw something moving in the basin below. It was Merle! After nearly an hour, I made it to the basin and saw Merle standing on a large rock. Relief washed over me. Soon, I was close enough to see that he looked oddly swollen and was badly injured. When I got within a few feet of him, he dived into a crack at the edge of a field of rocks.

I immediately struggled to clear snow and rocks, but could only stick my head in the crack. Peering into the darkness, I just heard the rings of Merle’s collar. I yelled. No response. Then I went to the scene of the fall and saw the path Merle had taken: He’d slid some 700 feet down the upper snowfield, fallen off a 40-foot cliff, and then rolled down another 100-foot cliff to the lower snowfield.

“It’s typical of a dog in great pain to hide, who is on the edge of dying.” My vet’s words flashed across my mind.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I live with my husband in San Luis Obispo, California, about three miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales come into the bay for a few days while they’re migrating. November 2020 was one of those times, so we took out our yellow double kayak(皮艇)to watch the wildlife. We paddled out the length of the pier(码头)and saw seals, dolphins, and about 20 whales feeding on silverfish. We were in awe watching these graceful giants—each one about 50 feet long—breach and spray through their blowholes. We laughed when they turned their side fins so that it looked as if they were waving at us.

At the time, my friend Liz was staying with us. The next day, I asked her if she wanted to go out on the water to see them.

“No way,” said Liz, now 65. She was not an experienced kayaker and was terrified that the kayak would overturn while we were surrounded by hungry whales. “There’s nothing to worry about,” I assured her. “The craft is stable, and we can turn back anytime. I’ve learned somewhere that whales have enormous mouths but tiny throats. Anything they can`t swallow they spit right out.” After some cajoling(劝诱), she finally agreed to join me. I didn’t want her to miss this magnificent experience and regret it later.

Liz and I got out on the water at 8:30 the following morning. There were already about 15 other kayakers and paddleboarders in the bay. It was warm for November, so we wore T-shirts and leggings. After a half-hour, we had our first whale sighting just past the pier: two humpbacks swimming toward us. How amazing to be that close to a creature that size, I thought as the whales dipped under the waterline.

When whales go down after breaching, they leave what looks like an oil slick on the water. I figured if we paddled toward that spot, we’d be safe from the whales, since they’d just left. We followed them at a distance—or what I thought was a distance. I later found out that it’s recommended to keep 300 feet away. We were more like 60 feet away.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之成为一个完整的故事。

“You should get a dog.” my therapist (治疗专家) said. A dog? I couldn’t even look after myself. I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a canine (犬科的) friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a solution to the fact that I couldn't leave the house without bursting into tears.

Adopting an animal during the height of the pandemic was far from easy. When I found Simba, his adoption profile made him out as the perfect puppy. I filed out the paperwork and had a few weeks to prepare for his arrival.

When he came home, it became increasingly obvious that Simba didn’t understand “no”, “stop it’ or “don’t do that”. He was the worst-behaved dog I’d ever seen. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice.

At home, I found him sitting on my bed comfortably. Jumping from the sofa to the tea table was his favorite game every day. He fought tooth and nail to get a bite of my meals and ate anything that fell on the floor. What was worse, dog waste and urine were seen everywhere, which annoyed me most. But his curiosity and vigor really impressed me. Training him to behave well kept me busier than I’d ever expected.

I decided to start taking him for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Simba. Simba showed me what bravery looked like. He didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation. He simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park,he would run toward it. He always leapt forward and explored the unknown by sniffing here and there unless I called him. He loved adventure. I found myself mirroring his behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.
