4 . I was first going into this final day, the Junior Sled Dog Championship. We’d trained two years and wanted to beat Blake. I knelt down to pat Kenai and my hands ______ from nerves and excitement. Kenai tipped up his face to lick my chin. “You are ______, aren’t you?”

The race vet examining Kenai, I watched Blake accept the trophy. Kenai squirming in my lap, I leaned over upon him. Just at that moment, I felt a warm tongue on my wet cheek. I smiled and realized that I had the ____ that really counted.

5 . Animals can be heroes.

One sunny afternoon as I sat on my back porch, I noticed my loyal dog Louie playing in the yard. Suddenly, barking (吠叫) ________, he rushed to the chicken cage.

With a winning bark, he dashed forward to grab the snake in his Jaws — but ________ and ended up falling into a pile of leaves. The snake, ________ its chance, slipped away into the underbrush, Louie ________ from the leaves, looking a bit confused but still determined to protect the chickens. He settled down next to the cage, keeping a watchful eye on the area ________ the snake came back. The chickens seemed to sense Louie’s ________, and they looked out at him through the wire mesh, clucking their thanks.

And that’s how Louie became a ________ in our yard.

6 . I’m retired and not responsible for much these days. My wife’s work, on the other hand, is never-ending. Diana takes care of her parents in their mid-nineties,_________home and garden, volunteers for various community organizations. 7 . The most powerful hurricane in the year was crashing into coastlines in Virginia. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue planned to take the 21 dogs, affected by the disaster, to a ________ in South Carolina, which became crowded as people near the coast were evacuating.

Mirah Horowitz is the head of Lucky Dog in Arlington, Virginia. “It’s a double ________,” she said. Her group found it hard to help the dogs as well as drive them from Virginia to South Carolina ________ a seven-hour trip. Then they have to put dogs in wooden boxes and bring them to the Washington, D.C., area. Finally, they had to make sure there were enough families to ________ the dogs.

The group tried to ________ more dogs from South Carolina over the weekend. They were going to hold an adoption (领养) event on September 8 at the shelter in the Washington, D.C., area. Horowitz and her colleagues decided to take some dogs and emailed ________ that night looking for families to adopt the dogs. “We had to find people to take those animals between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.” Horowitz said. ________, they were getting many replies until 2 a.m. from people who were willing to help, after hours of ________ waiting.

Lucky Dog was also talking to an animal shelter on the island of Grand Bahama in the Bahamas. That was where the hurricane had caused the most ________ so far. The workers there did not know the dogs’ situations. ________, they heard reports of heavy flooding that had ________ the shelter. Horowitz’s group also has a helicopter which is ready to offer flights to ________ some emergency supplies.

Horowitz said, “I really ________ the help from those families. It feels nice to save animals from areas ________ by severe weather and it is ________ to make all the efforts.”

10 . “Jin Pei, 75, encountered Biubiu on a cold night in 2015 when she dashed out from nowhere as Jin was ______ her own dog. “She walked fast when we walked fast, and slowed down when we did. She followed us all the way, and I sensed she wanted ______ to find herself a home. ”

Since that night, the pair have become ______ companions. People can find Biubiu wherever Jin is, and, last December, Biubiu became a therapy (治疗) dog visiting care homes for the ______ and rehabilitation (康复) facilities for autistic (患自闭症的) children to aid their ______.
