1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A bright sun setting, Sylvia was driving home her cow, a valued companion, wandering through the forest, and listening to birds’ singing. Suddenly the air was cut by a sharp whistle not far away. Sylvie knew it wasn’t a bird’s whistle.

“Hello, little girl,” a young man came into sight suddenly, “I’ve lost my way. Do you think I can spend the night at your house?” Sylvia was alarmed, but still agreed.

When they arrived, her grandma, Mrs. Tilley, welcomed the guest with hospitality. The man explained to them that he was an ornithologist (鸟类学者). “Do you cage them up?” Sylvia asked doubtfully. “Oh no,” he answered enthusiastically, “I shoot dozens and dozens of them myself, and preserve them with special chemicals.”

“Sylvia knows a lot about birds, too.” Her grandmother said proudly.

“Really? I caught a glimpse of a very rare bird, a little white heron (苍鹭), which keeps me around. Have you seen it, too?” He gently asked, looking at Sylvia with some hope.

But Sylvia was watching a frog in the narrow footpath.

“It’s a tall, white bird with soft feathers and long thin legs. It probably has its nest at the top of a tall tree.” The man continued eagerly.

Sylvia’s heart gave a wild beat. She knew that special white bird! She had seen it on the other side of the forest and had once approached softly near where it stood.

The young man added desperately, “I would give $100 to you.”

Her grandma gave amazed attention to it, but Sylvia still watched the road.

The next day the young man hovered about the woods, and Sylvia kept him company, having lost her first fear. They had such a wonderful day to enjoy the birds’ songs and the thick branches. She had never seen anyone so handsome and charming. A strange excitement filled her heart. Sylvia would have liked him better without his gun. She could not understand why he killed the birds he seemed to like so much. She felt her heart tremble every time he shot an unsuspecting bird as it was singing in the trees.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Tiki!” I yelled desperately.

Our dog, Tiki, had slipped out the door earlier that evening. Now I was searching the neighborhood trying to find him. My seven-year-old son, Jordan, was following behind.

I was worried about Jordan. He had lost so much already. The last few months had been difficult. After getting divorced, I could no longer afford our house in Indianapolis. Jordan and I moved in with my parents in northern Indiana. Jordan missed his friends and his old school. Losing his childhood dog was the last thing he needed.

We called out Tilki’s name until it was completely dark. We were forced to return home, empty-handed.

“Mom, it’s all new here. What if Tiki can’t find Grandma’s house?” asked Jordan. “It’s okay,” I said. “He’s wearing his collar and dog tag (标牌).” It was at that moment that I realized Tiki’s tag listed our address and phone number in Indianapolis. If someone found him, they’d have no way to reach me. I felt sick to my stomach.

The next day, I kept asking around to see if anyone had spotted him. But after two weeks, I began to lose hope.

One afternoon, I found Jordan crying in his room. “At school, we had to write about our wishes,” he said. “I wrote, ‘I wish my dog would come home.’ Mrs. Rush hung our papers in the hallway. Every time I see my paper, I feel sad.” My heart broke for him.

So later that week, when he put on a stained shirt from his old school back in Indianapolis, I just let it slide. If it helped him get through the school day, that was more important than looking put-together.

When he got home that afternoon, he told me the school custodian (管理员) had asked him about his shirt. “I told him we just moved here from Indianapolis,” said Jordan.

The next day, I got a call from Mrs. Rush. “I’m calling on behalf of our school custodian,” she began. “His grown daughter found a dog a few weeks ago, and he thinks it might be yours.”

3 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.

As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they’d seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.

The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn’t help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.

Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours, ” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.

Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Max! Come here, please,” Mom called.

I dropped my suitcase. Mr. O’Malley couldn’t be in trouble already! I raced to the kitchen and was relieved to see my big dog simply walking around, smelling every corner of our new house. He stood at the front door, listening to the unfamiliar traffic noises.

Mom said, “Will you phone Grandpa? I promised to let him know when we got here.”

I dialed, and Grandpa picked up on the first ring.

“Grandpa!”

“Max! How’s your new house?”

“Fine.” I swallowed hard. “I miss you already.”

“It’s been too quiet since you left,” he said. “Even the squirrels miss being chased (追逐) by that big old ugly dog of yours!”

“Grandpa, he’s not ugly!”

Grandpa laughed, “That dog is used to running wild on this farm. I could keep him here, since you’ll be coming up every weekend.”

“I know,” I said. “But I couldn’t give up my dog for five days a week!”

“Just an idea,” Grandpa said. “Put your mom on.”

Mom was busy sorting out the luggage as I passed her the phone. I took the chain (链条) Grandpa had given me, tied it to Mr. O’Malley’s collar (颈圈) and walked him to the backyard. My chest tightened as he stared at me with sad eyes. What he wanted to do was run.

At last Friday came, and we packed to go to the farm. “Let’s walk him to the car together,” Mom said, tying the chain to his collar.

As we started out the door, Mr. O’Malley suddenly took off and I lost hold. Mom and I quickly jumped into the car and caught up to Mr. O’Malley, who was running beside the road with his tongue sticking out. All at once, he dashed into the road. A coming car came to a sudden stop in front of us. Mom mouthed “Sorry” to the driver. To me, she yelled, “Don’t lose sight of that dog!” We chased Mr. O’Malley all the way to the park before he’d had enough and was ready to get in the car.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a chilly, brisk morning, and Jason and his friends hiked quickly through the woods. Jason watched the river flow alongside him, fascinated by the rapid water. He had a keen interest in anything fast-race cars, horses, or rivers.

Jason turned to Tanya. “The river is fast,” he said, “but I can go even faster.” Then Jason took off to race the river along the shore. Suddenly, he tripped over a tree log, tumbled (滚落), and rolled into the river.

Tanya screamed in terror as Jason fell. When Jason cried out for help, waving his arms wildly, Tanya realized Jason was in serious trouble. Mr. Green, the group leader, had also seen what had happened and came running. Quickly, Mr. Green and the rest of the group ran alongside the river. Though they tried to catch up with Jason, he was always just out of their reach.

Jason kept his head above water as he floated downstream. Fortunately, he was a strong swimmer and managed to move easily with the water current. At one point, the river curved, and the water flow slowed down a bit. When he caught sight of a large rock ahead of him, he held out his arms and waited to grab it. It worked, and Jason’s movement down the river stopped!

Jason observed his surroundings and realized he was not far from shore. He felt he could swim there easily. He took a deep breath and got ready to push off until something appeared from behind a tee. It was a big bear.

Jason was both surprised and scared. He knew it wasn’t safe to swim to shore now, and he didn’t wish to make the bear’s acquaintance. If they met, he would be no match for the powerful creature. He shivered and held on more tightly to the rock.

Jason watched the bear and it seemed to be staring right back at him. Suddenly, it began to walk to the edge of the river, and Jason grew scared. Jason looked around and noticed tall reds (芦苇), which looked like giant straws, growing in the water.

One Saturday afternoon, I was watching TV in the living room with my grandpa when a blinding flash of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening sound, and the pictures on TV disappeared with that sound. Before I realized what had happened, a gray-white shadow rushed in through the open window and flew over my head. Bang! It hit the wall and slid off to the floor. Shaking with fear, I approached it cautiously and saw that it was a pigeon. It looked at me in fear, trying to open its wings and struggling its feet, but apparently powerless.

So I called my grandpa and immediately set out to give it a helping hand. Taking it in my hands, I felt a few drops of warmth on my hands. It was blood! I gently spread its wings and there were a few red feathers inside. “Don’t worry. We’ll get it out alive,” Grandpa said to me. Then he got the first-aid kit. With some cotton, we dried the blood, cleaned the wound and then put it under a hairdryer to dry. All went smoothly, for the pigeon had no strength left to resist. There happened to be an empty birdcage at home, so I put it in gently and added a little water and some grains.

For the next few days, the moment I got home from school, I would run to feed the pigeon. And Grandpa helped a lot, tidying up the cage daily. Little by little, its strength returned. One evening, I fed it with the biscuit I was eating. It enjoyed it! One week later, its wound almost healed (痊愈); its feathers grew and it became brave. Whenever I sat at the table eating biscuits, it looked up at me, cooing (咕咕地叫) constantly. To my joy, I could also reach into the cage to touch it. When I gently fingered its head, it playfully pecked (啄) at me. Finally it completely recovered. But every time I was with it, it seemed restless in the cage. To make it happy and pretty, I tied an orange string (线)around its leg.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The Box Cat

Chester was born in a box with four other kittens. He was in a smaller box marked "free kitten" when Sasha met him and took him home. And from that moment on, he loved boxes. Every day after he finished grooming(刷洗), licking his paws and fur with his tongue, he would look around for a box to sleep in.

He slept in hat boxes, gift boxes and takeout food boxes. He slept in Sasha's sock drawer, if she left it open. One year Sasha got a beautiful dollhouse for her birthday, a dark green three-story house with lots of furniture. Sasha loved it. So did Chester. He liked to push the furniture out of all the rooms and sit in the bedroom on the second floor. Sasha had to redecorate the dollhouse every day, but she didn't mind as long as Chester was happy.

One day Sasha came home from school, and she couldn't find Chester. He wasn't in the dollhouse, or her sock drawer, even though she'd forgotten to close it.

"Mom, Dad!" Sasha wailed(大叫). "Chester is gone!"

Sasha's mom looked in the attic. There were boxes and dust bunnies, and even a mouse that had escaped Chester's notice, but no Chester. Sasha's dad looked in the kitchen cabinets, but no Chester.

Suddenly ---

"I found him!" Sasha cried.

Chester was inside her mom's new glass vase, and he didn't look happy at all. Even his whiskers(须)looked sad. Sasha tipped the vase over gently and tried to pull him out, but Chester just yowled(惨叫).

"We'll have to break the vase to get him out!" Sasha cried.

Now her mom didn't look happy. It was a beautiful vase, clear glass with blue and green swirls.

"No," said her dad. "If we break it, the glass shards(碎片)might hurt Chester. Maybe we can put butter on the inside of the vase and slide him out, like the time you got that ring stuck on your finger."

Paragraph 1: Sasha's mom buttered as much of the inside of the vase as she could reach.

Paragraph 2: Soon they were at the vet's(兽医)office with an annoyed, frightened and buttery cat in a vase.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a summer morning. The sun was out in full splendor against a nearly cloudless light blue sky. “Mamma,” said Susie Dean, a 11-year-old girl, “may I go to the woods and pick berries?” Mrs. Dean replied, “Yes, but you must take Rover with you.”

Susie swiftly got everything ready, and her mother packed a nice lunch for her. She tied the cover and fastened a tin cup to it. The little girl called Rover—a great Newfoundland dog, and gave him a tin pail(锡桶)to carry. “If I bring it home full, Mamma,” she said, “won't you make some berry cakes for tea?”

Away she tripped, singing as she went down the lane and across the pasture. When she got to the woods, she put her lunch basket down beside a tree and began to pick berries. Rover ran about, chasing a squirrel or a rabbit now and then, but never straying far from Susie.

The tin pail was not a very small one. By the time it was two thirds full, Susie began to feel hungry and thought she would eat her lunch. Rover came and took his place at her side the moment she began to eat. Did Susie give him some of the lunch? No. She was in a selfish mood and did no such thing.

“There, Rover, run away!” she said, but Rover stayed near her, watching her steadily with his clear brown eyes. The meat he wanted so much was soon eaten up, and all he got of the nice lunch was a small crust of gingerbread that Susie threw away.

After lunch, Susie played for a while by the stream. She repeatedly threw sticks into the water, and Rover swam in and brought them back. Then she began to pick berries again. She did not enjoy the afternoon as she did the morning. The sunshine was as bright, the berries were as sweet and plentiful, and she was neither tired nor hungry. But good, faithful Rover was hungry, and she had not given him even one piece of meat. She tried to forget how selfish she had been, but she could not do so, and quite early she started for home.

When she was nearly out of the woods, a rustling in the underbrush attracted her attention. “I wonder if that is a bird or a squirrel,” she said to herself. “If I can catch it, how glad I will be!” She tried to make her way quietly through the underbrush.
