Effects of Acid Rain

After studying the Hubbard Brook Forest and other areas, researchers found several important effects of acid deposition, more commonly referred to as acid rain, on both natural and man-made environments. Aquatic (水生的) settings are the most clearly affected because acidic precipitation falls directly into them.

As this acidic liquid flows into larger bodies of water, it is diluted (稀释). However, over time, acids can increase and lower the overall pH of the body of water. Acid deposition also causes clay soils to release aluminum and magnesium, further lowering the pH in some areas. If the pH of a lake drops below 4.8, its plants and animals risk death. It is estimated that around 50,000 lakes in the United States and Canada have a pH below normal (about 5.3 for water). Several hundred of these have a pH too low to support any aquatic life.

Aside from aquatic bodies, acid deposition can significantly affect forests. As acid rain falls on trees it can make them lose their leaves, damage their bark, and stunt their growth. By damaging these parts of the tree, it makes them vulnerable to disease, extreme weather and insects. Damage to forests by acid rain is seen all over the world, but the most advanced cases are in Eastern Europe. Half of the forests in Germany and Poland and about 30 percent in Switzerland, are estimated to have been damaged.

Finally, acid deposition also has an effect on architecture and art because of its ability to corrode certain materials. As acid lands on buildings (especially those constructed with limestone), it reacts with minerals in the stones, sometimes causing them to disintegrate and wash away.

One evening I went to the park to refresh myself as usual. I rested on the bench and leaned back, stretching my legs. I did nothing but watch kids' activities over there. My eyes fell upon a pair of cute children. I was fascinated by their gaming, screaming and saying in no-cent words. Perhaps, they used to come regularly but I didn't notice them before. They seemed to be brother and sister, I guessed they were under ten years old. I stared at them as they involved themselves in their fun game; hide and seek. Their loose coats put a barrier to hide and easily one of them was caught by the other. Then I joined their game and enjoyed it without being an onlooker.

While playing, the girl came running towards me to hide behind the bench. The moment I saw her, she gestured, clamping her finger on her lips. I sat straight to help her to hide, acting as if I didn't know anything. After finishing his count down, the boy searched for her here and there. At last, he spotted her behind me and screamed, “Grace, come out. I saw you.”

She shouted loudly, “No, Christian, you cheated. You have to find me again. Go back behind the tree and start counting again.” The boy clapped his hands cheerfully. He laughed out loud, “No, I did it. You are caught.” They both started pulling each other. Somehow, I enjoyed their bane fully. Suddenly, I noticed Grace pull her brother towards the fence. A homeless little dog was struggling with pain.

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.

As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they’d seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.

The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn’t help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.

Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours, ” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.

Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

Every year, Tia Vargas and her dad go hiking: this summer’s trip was up Table Rock in the Grand Tetons in early July. Vargas was just below the 11, 000-foot peak with her dad waiting about a mile down the trail (路线) when she ran into a family of hikers who had found an injured English springer spaniel (斯宾格猎犬).

They couldn’t find the limping (跛的) pup’s owner and, because the family were hiking with kids, Vargas figured it would be easier for her to carry the pup to safety.

“I had to crawl under him to get him up on my shoulders,” Vargas, a single mother of three from Idaho Falls, Idaho, tells MNN. “I felt the difficulty of it right away. I never felt 55 pounds like that before.” Vargas soon ran into her dad, Ted Kasper, who snapped some photos when he saw his daughter coming down the trail with a dog on her shoulders. “Dad laughed and said. ‘Isn’t this hike hard enough? You have to carry a dog too?’” Vargas recalls. “My dad makes me laugh. He is such a great man.”

That sense of humor helped Vargas get through the hard journey of carrying the heavy dog down the steep trail, she says. The trip was hard and nearly unbearable at times. “Every time I put him down to rest, it was difficult. And every time I got down on my knees to put my head under his belly and try to use neck and body strength to lift him it was painful and difficult. I thought we would see people on the trail on the way down to help. But that wasn’t the case.” she says.

Paragraph 1:

The group of three got lost once because of the fallen trees that made the trail disappear.

Paragraph 2:

Finally hiking six miles and reaching the bottom of the trail, Vargas found a very small note that said, “Lost dog named Boomer, call this number.”

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a terribly hot day. This weekend was causing a stir in the household and not without a reason.

It was just a week ago that Kang and his two elder sisters laid their eyes on the adorable little black puppy at the animal shelter. After waiting for almost a week, the much-awaited moment finally arrived. One-Eyed would be a new addition to the family! Kang felt that the name was suitable considering the dog’s physical disability.

When One-Eyed arrived, everyone wanted to do something for her-feed her, teach her tricks and take long walks with her. Everybody was happy to spend some time with this active, playful, thick-hairy new addition to the family. All except Kang!

Being the youngest in the family had its advantages, of course. However, it also came with a fair share of trouble. Every time Kang asked his older sisters if he could pat One-Eyed, they would tell him that he had virus on his hands which might cause the puppy to be sick. Kang believed them and was scared that something unthinkable might happen to the dog. When Mother heard this, she scolded the two sisters, “You’d better stop playing tricks on your little brother!”

Little brother! That was exactly what they thought he was. Kang was angry. One day, he took one look at the dog and decided, “I’ll show them what a little kid can do!” He took One-Eyed into the bathroom. “I’m going to give you a bath!” he declared. One-Eyed gazed at Kang with her one good eye; it was as if she knew that disaster was going to fall upon her.

The five-year-old looked at the sink. Too small a place, he thought. He finally decided on what he thought was a perfect place for a dog bath-the toilet bowl(马桶)! Kang took his sister’s shampoo(香波) and poured it into the toilet bowl.

Gen and her 5-year-old daughter found a fox cub (幼崽) trapped between her and her neighbour’s fence. The poor cub looked as though it had fallen down between the fence. It was stuck on its back with its limbs in the air.

Gen put gloves on and carefully freed the cub from the fence, but it was clear that it was shocked and injured. When she put it down, it couldn’t even move. She contacted their local wildlife rescue charity soon, but they said they couldn’t help because they didn’t have enough staff members. “We shouldn’t leave it there to die,” Gen said to her daughter. So they took it back and tried their best to look after it.

They fed the fox cub and kept it warm and clean. The fox cub slowly began to regain its strength and was able to walk, only a few feet at first, though. Once the fox cub had recovered, Gen felt clear that it wanted to look for its family, so they put it in a box outside in the garden for periods of time with some food and water, hoping its family might come to look for it.

At first, there was no sign of the mother fox. But then one night, something had visited Gen and her husband David’s garden. The next morning, the family were shocked to see the garden had been torn apart. They thought the mother fox must have had come looking for her cub.

“The mother fox was angry,” said David. “Trying to think about what she must have been going through to destroy so much of our stuff,” said Gen. They thought they had to create a good chance to get them back together. Then a genius idea came to them.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a hot and wet day in late summer. I was a young dad working in a local wood factory. It was dangerous, back-breaking work that paid very little.

In the year I had worked there, only four other people hadn’t quit and been replaced with new faces. Those of us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.

One day the electric fans weren’t working and all of us were covered in sweat and sawdust . When I looked around every face, they looked angry and frustrated. Suddenly, a voice called out: “Hey! There’s a deer in here. A lost little deer had wandered through the open loading bay doors and was now hiding in fear in between the huge piles of wood. All of us stopped working and went looking for her as she ran about crazily looking for a way out.

Now most people where I live hunt deer for meat in the fall but treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Many will even buy bags of corn to help feed them during the cold winter months. It was no surprise then that all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little deer. By blocking off all the other routes, we were able to guide her crazy search back to the open bay doors.

We watched as she jumped out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back in to work. I noticed something, though. On every face, there was a joyful smile. It seemed as if this one single act of kindness had energized us again and reminded us of what life was all about.

A Midnight Rescue

It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers. Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight. It was urgent so there was no time to hesitate. They headed into the forest.

The forest was black and silent. A little way into it they reached a fork in the earth path. Harry and David took the left path. They walked in silence, their eyes on the ground, watching out for the traps like big pits(坑)set by the illegal hunters. Every now and then a ray of moonlight through the branches above lit a spot of scarlet(猩红的)blood on the fallen leaves.

David saw that Harry looked very worried, asking, "Could Unicorn be hurt that badly?" Harry answered, "If we can't find it as soon as possible, it doesn't stand much chance to survive." Of course, Unicorn was not the animal in fairy tales but the nickname of a 3-year-old elephant, the last wild elephant in this forest. The nickname was given by the biodiversity rescuers who were protecting every member in this forest. They knew Unicorn was obedient and not afraid of human beings and that sometimes put it in danger. "Without it, the forest was not complete. Those illegal hunters should be thrown into prison." Harry thought, carrying his first aid kit(急救箱)on his back and walking forward with his flashlight.

It seemed that thick fog would come at any time, which would increase the danger. Harry hurried into the heart of the forest with David. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper. There were blood splashes(血迹)on the roots of a tree, as though the poor creature had been struggling around in pain close by. "We must hurry up", said Harry.
