7 . Where Does the Garbage Go?

When you throw something in the dustbin soon a garbage truck will come to take it away. Then where does it go? That depends on where you live. Different towns deal with rubbish in different ways.

Recycling

A recycling truck picks up paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, and glass. These go to the recycling plant to be sorted and made into new things.

Incinerator

An incinerator is a huge furnace that burns rubbish to make heat and electricity. The ash that's left gets buried in a landfill. Rubbish ash can be harmful, so it has to be stored carefully. But it takes up a lot less room than just plain rubbish.

Compost(堆肥)

Food waste might go to a composter. In a compost heap(堆), bacteria and worms break down dead plants and old food. They turn it into good, rich soil. Some people keep compost heaps in their gardens. Big commercial composters handle waste from restaurants and farms.

Landfill

Some rubbish gets buried in landfills. A landfill starts as a big hole. Trucks dump rubbish. Big earth movers push it into place and crush it down. They cover the rubbish with dirt to keep scavengers(食腐动物, 拾荒者)away. The bottom of a landfill is lined with a barrier to keep bad things from leaking(渗透)into the ground. Pipes carry away liquid.

Microbes that eat rubbish make methane gas. Landfills have openings to let the gas out so it doesn't explode. Some gain the methane. They use it to fuel garbage trucks or make electricity.

When the landfill is full, it's covered with earth. It might become a park.

1. Where should the rubbish be sent to in order to make it into new things?
A.The cycling plantsB.The recycling trucks.

Last year, our city called on the citizens to sort and recycle rubbish, but I became a volunteer in my neighbourhood. After dinner, I got to the place that different rubbish should be thrown into different bin. Then came an old lady, carrying a bag of kitchen waste with plastic bottles in them. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck(露台)of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm.

Challenging the weather that threatened to damp our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado(龙卷风)was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad.

Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cottage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind.

“Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled(爬)beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror.

My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away.

“Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said.

10 . The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.

Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.

In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic(合成的) clothing can produce more than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.

This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.

Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design-his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.

1. What has happened during the past five years?
A.Fabric has become much stronger.B.Plastic pollution has been less serious.
C.Many plastic bottles have been reused.D.Microfibers have been greatly improved.
2. What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes?
A.It is adding microfibers to the clothes.
B.It is worsening environmental problems.
C.It is making synthetic clothes last longer.
D.It is doing great damage to washing machines.
3. What can be inferred about Browne’s Benign by Design research project?
A.It has achieved great success.B.It hasn’t got anything done.
C.It is known to very few people.D.It is facing some difficulties.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.It’s important to learn to recycle
B.It’s never easy to solve pollution problems
C.Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution?
D.Are human beings moving forward or backward?
