3 . Our planet is losing species at an alarming rate. As the world has become increasingly industrialized, natural habitats have been destroyed to build cities that are unlivable for wildlife. However, a pair of European designers, architect Rene Hougaard and product designer Alexander Qual, believe there are ways to encourage cities to coexist with nature. Inspired by everyday people who build “insect hotels“ in their backyards, they’ve created outdoor furniture that would be beautiful to look at, but also allow bugs, birds and wildflowers to thrive (繁殖).
The natural world tends to appear messy and chaotic to the human eye, but there is often method in the madness. Qual and Hougaard kept this in mind as in all the structures, they played with the concepts of order and messiness.
Qual created a large, yellow, leaf-shaped insect hotel, that’s designed to be placed on a flower bed in a park. The structure contains wooden blocks with holes that are 6, 7 and 8 millimeters in diameter (直径), since different insect species prefer holes of different sizes.
Hougaard created a metal log bench with an empty space in the middle specifically designed to hold a decaying (腐烂的) log that can provide a habitat for insects and plants, along with birds and bats. While humans often shun decay, Hougaard imagines a place where people can sit down and observe the slow process in which bacteria break down the wood, creating food for insects, birds and other animals.
As for the question of whether people actually want to be so close to bugs, snakes and nesting birds, the designers acknowledge that modern humans have been trained to stay away from such creatures. But Hougaard says these structures keep animals contained, while allowing people to observe and appreciate them safely. And eventually, if we want to maintain biodiversity, humans need to become much more comfortable living alongside wildlife, rather than feeling the need to destroy it. After all, we humans need nature to survive.

5 . Traditionally, profiting from forests often meant capitalizing on timber (木材)——choosing commercial timber. Yet increasingly, there is an understanding that it’s of greater significance to keep trees standing than cut them down for financial profit. Money is not everything. We have to recognize real and lasting value is from natural resources. But money is a fact of life.
Good news is that we can expect entire natural woodland is left undamaged and still provides a revenue (收益) stream. Leaving woodland complete does not necessarily mean that we do not touch it at all. Conservation work may involve building back biodiversity or the removal of foreign plant species.
A healthy woodland system can provide a range of yields (产物). Besides eatable yields——top fruit, berries, and food crops, it produces substances for chemical use. The non-timber forest products provided by natural ecosystems will vary significantly depending on where they are. But there’re almost always ways to explore to acquire revenue.
A project in the U.K. shows woodland is also a draw for visitors. It engages a community who creates a sustainable area of woodland. The sale of handmade wooden items and non-timber forest products is involved. But the community largely obtains revenue by opening up parts of the natural woodland to the public with an adventure playground and outdoor recreational activities on the site. It also offers courses on nest building, special wildlife events and more. The project is thought to have great uniqueness. In terms of revenue, it centers round the existing natural land; the yields woodland can provide become side products.
Recreational activities, tours, and classes are just the commencement. A rich and biodiverse woodland can be an ecosystem that draws in people looking for a beautiful place to stay. Woodland has great value in ecological and social terms. And when you nurse it, it could also add to the income from your land.

6 . Wildlife faces threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and other human actions.
★Create wildlife-friendly areas in your backyard.
When trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter to native wildlife.
★Avoid harming the natural ecosystem (生态系统) in your area.
Some plants from other places can kill or harm native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife.
★Have a greener lifestyle.
By using less water and fewer fuels, you will be helping to protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway when you can.
★Buy products that are wildlife-friendly.
★
You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife species in your neighbourhood.
A.This will also help cut down on pollution. |
B.Turn off electric devices when you’re not using them. |
C.It is suggested that we protect wildlife through actions. |
D.That is why protecting wildlife is extremely important now. |
E.Don’t buy products that are made from endangered animals. |
F.Donate money or time to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats. |

9 . There are many things that we can do in our own ways which will help save the environment. What are some of these ways to save the environment? Let’s take a look at a list of them.
There won’t be enough water before we need to fight for clean and fresh water. That is why saving water and preventing water pollution becomes very important. Keep simple things in mind like turning off the tap when you are brushing teeth. Don’t often take a shower. Don’t pour oil into the drains. Don’t throw rubbish into the river.
Save paper to save trees. Make sure that you use both sides of paper before throwing it away. If you can, try not to use paper as possible as you can and do not forget to recycle paper. Also, using cloth bags instead of paper bags can save much Paper. This is one of the best ways to save our environment.
Recycling is important. It makes sure that the environment is not more polluted. Recycling does not simply include recycling paper, but things like plastic, metal and office supplies like pens, ink and more. This makes sure that they are changed into material that is reusable and also puts less pressure on the environment.
What are the ways to save energy? Turn off the lights and computers before you leave. Use cold water instead of hot water to wash clothes, use the stairs instead of the lift and keep the air conditioner on moderate setting (设置) to save energy.
In a word, try our best to do something to save our environment, and we will do something helpful to save ourselves.
1. How can we save trees according to the passage?A.By saving water. | B.By planting trees. |

10 . Chіnеѕе раngоlіnѕ ( 中华穿山甲) live in the south of the country’s Yangtze River. The long-tailed animals spend most of the daytime sleeping, curling up into a ball. They have poor eyesight so they use their well- developed sense of smell to find their diet of insects at night. Their physical appearance is marked by large, hardened, plate-like scales ( 鳞 片 ) . The scales, which are soft on newborn pangolins but harden as they grow up. Pangolins are also known as scaly anteaters (食蚁兽) and they hеlр рrоtесt trееѕ іn thе fоrеѕts.
But now they are in danger. Experts say that Chinese pangolins are functionally extinct, Beijing News reported. This suggests that there won’ t be more baby pangolins in the wild. The population of pangolins will be smaller and smaller. They can no longer play an important role in the wild.
According to a national wildlife survey, there were about 60,000 Chinese pangolins in different places, including Yunnan and Zhejiang, in the 1990s. Since then, this number has fallen by 90 percent because of hunters who kill them for their scales and meat. People use their scales in traditional Chinese medicine and it’ s believed by some that their meat is high in nutritional value. In addition, Chinese pangolins are facing a loss of their homes because of pollution and a reduction in the forest area.
The environment has changed a lot due to human activity which is mainly focused on the development of economy. What is worse, many animals like pangolins have to live in a much- polluted homeland. Their population has become smaller and smaller. It is time for us to take measures to show care to our friends, the animals.
1. What can we learn about Chinese pangolins from the first paragraph?A.They live in a much- polluted homeland. |
B.They are born with hard scales. |
C.They are good for trees. |
A.Pangolins lose their sense of smell. |
B.Pangolins cannot give birth to new babies. |
C.Pangolins cannot adapt to the nature. |
A.The policy for protecting them is not strict. |
B.There are many hunters killing them. |
C.Air pollution is very serious. |
A.To present the way of protecting animals. |
B.To prove the importance of Chinese pangolins. |
C.To raise people’s awareness of protecting pangolins. |
