Yours sincerely,

Man did not have to think about the protection of his environment in the past. There were not many people on the Earth, and natural resources seemed to be unlimited.
Today, things are different.
Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. However, in most countries, waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this.
We know, too, that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there will not be enough food.
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept.
The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
Last weekend, I took part in a forest clean-up activity. It was organized by Green Hope, an organization devoted to protecting forests.起初,我不想参加,
Our team leader, Joe, took us to a forest outside the city. I was sad to find rubbish everywhere.

6 . Tian Wangui and his wife Lu Min are villagers in Qiantian Village, Liaoning Province. They began planting trees over forty years ago. With their hard work, the two barren (贫瘠的) mountains are covered by trees now.
After leaving the army in the 1980s, Tian got back home and began planting fruit trees on the hills. In 1982, the couple got the contract rights (承包经营权) of two mountains. At first, they planted some young fruit trees on part of the land. In order to water them, they had to carry water up to the top of the mountains many times a day by themselves.
Now, the two mountains are covered by more than 50,000 trees of over 20 kinds. More than 2,000 birds live in the trees in the mountains.
“We cared for the mountains and trees as we cared for our children,” said Lu. “Even as we grow old, our children will protect the woods, watch over the birds and keep our dream alive.”

7 . For many years, the Caribbean island of Redonda was a bare (光秃秃的) rock with very little wildlife on it. Thanks to local environmental groups, it has now returned to its former state and was recently named a protected area by the government.
Redonda was once a peaceful place for wildlife. In the 17th century, people set foot on the island for the first time and found that guano (海鸟粪) produced by seabirds was useful to help farm crops grow. Humans began to mine the guano, and with the people came goats and black rats—invasive (入侵的) species.
Although humans eventually stopped collecting guano and left the island, the goats and rats stayed behind. They ate many of the island’s plants and preyed on other species, eventually leaving Redonda a plantless landscape. Without plants, birds began to fly away from there and some of the soil broke into pieces and then into the sea.
In 2016, conservationists started a project to help the island and its wildlife recover. They began by removing the invasive species. Within months, the island’s plants began to grow back on their own. As the environment gradually became healthier, species that were native to the island began to appear again.
The new protected area, the Redonda Ecosystem Reserve, includes the island itself plus the sea around it, including seagrass field and a coral reef. Conservation groups will ensure that the island is protected from other invasive species, and strict rules about fishing in the area will be put in place.

10 . Last summer, a team of 15 primary and middle school students did a research on the biodiversity (生物多样性) of a small wetland (湿地) in Wuhan’s Houxianghe Park. They observed and recorded the number of plant and animal species (物种) there and made suggestions for improvement.
During their field research, the team found that there were few fish in the wetland. After further study, they found that there were not enough plants in the wetland for fish and other animals to develop in large groups.
In the following courses, students worked together to create design drawings and make a wetland-recovering plan. Thanks to their efforts, the biodiversity of the wetland has been greatly improved.
“It’s very meaningful,” said a primary school student in Wuhan. “I have learned a lot about strange animals and plants, and have also seen the improvement of the wetland. I’ll take part in more activities like this. ”
“It’s not easy for children to have a connection to nature in the city,” said an expert. “We should make full use of the city’s wetland and encourage more children to get closer to nature through the ‘Park Classes’ programme.”
In the past six years, the programme has carried out over 3, 000 activities in Wuhan’s 32 parks. It inspires students from primary and middle schools to learn more about environmental protection, and helps them get close to nature, developing their ability to explore and take action.
