文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了Omar Freilla和他的团队在南布朗克斯创办企业,通过与当地社区合作,将被丢弃的材料重新利用,创造了一个繁荣的业务,并为社区提供了就业机会。

1 . “Our first duty is to the place that raised us,” Omar Freilla says. “For me, it’s the South Bronx, the birthplace of hip-hop.”

Although the South Bronx was one of the nation’s poorest and most polluted areas, with crowded roads and poisonous industrial sites, Omar saw a different kind of potential amidst its challenges. He envisioned a new approach to the mountains of discarded materials.

“A lot of what people throw away is perfectly good,” he says. Omar was just out of college and he started thinking about how he could get this “good garbage” to people who could use it. Instead of destroying things like old windows and doors, why not clean them up and resell them? Why not hire people who live in the community to do the work? Better yet, why not make this business a “cooperative”, which means that the people who work in the business own it and share the profits?

To start his business, Omar put up flyers along the truck-jammed, trash-filled streets of his neighborhood, looking for people to work with him. He soon found four other dedicated workers. They rented a warehouse (仓库) and started looking for donations of used materials.

They called up hardware stores (五金店), building supply distributors, and contractors, providing free shipping from construction sites. Their warehouse began to fill up. A hardware store gave 2,000 gallons of paint that was still good but was being thrown away because it was past its expiration date (产品有效期). A distributor donated 80 new toilets from a project that had been canceled. Contractors added unwanted doors, sinks, ceiling fans — even theater seats and a giant popcorn machine!

In April 2008, Omar’s cooperative opened its doors for business and began selling construction supplies — at reasonable prices — to neighborhood builders and homeowners. With the help of city officials, he also began planning a new training program to help local residents learn the skills they need to get good jobs that help the environment and even start cooperatives of their own.

1. What was the primary motivation behind Omar’s decision to start his business in the South Bronx?
A.To make a profit from selling construction supplies.
B.To address the environmental challenges in the community.
C.To compete with existing hardware stores and distributors.
D.To provide job opportunities for skilled workers in the area.
2. How did Omar start his business in the South Bronx?
A.He relied on his personal savings to fund the business.
B.He distributed flyers to ask for donations from neighbors.
C.He sought funding from large companies to establish the business.
D.He actively engaged with his local community to gather support and resources.
3. How could hardware stores probably help with Omar’s business?
A.They provide free shipping.B.They provide useful resources.
C.They provide financial support.D.They provide a cheap workforce.
4. Which of the following would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.The Rise of Environmental Movement in the South Bronx
B.Community Cooperation: Transforming Waste into Resources
C.Omar Freilla: A New Star in the Hip-Hop Industry
D.Navigating Challenges: The Story of South Bronx Business

Caught in a flood

Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.

“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”

“No” said Dad. “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”

“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the caraway!”

Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside.

“Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. “The water may flood in!”

Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.

Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了Sargassum (马尾藻)对海洋生态系统和沿海社区的影响。

7 . Depending on the right combination of currents and wind, a large mass of Sargassum “seaweed”circling the Gulf of Mexico may soon wash up along the US coast near Florida. The bloom (藻华),which is likely to be the largest ever recorded,is visible from space.

Sargassum is a type of leafy, rootless algae that form large floating mats on the ocean floor. It can be found in the Sargasso Sea and was first mentioned by Christopher Columbus in 1492 when he was afraid his ship would become trapped in it.

Sargassum is an important habitat for marine species because it provides food, shelter, and breeding grounds. It absorbs carbon dioxide, an important greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, just like other floating marine vegetation, according to Phys.org. However, when tons of it gathers along coastlines, it sends out a terrible strong smell which can cause headaches, eye discomfort, and upset stomachs. Too much algae on beaches can harm marine ecosystems and make it difficult for people to keep on with their recreational and fishing activities, costing communities millions of dollars.

Scientists have been tracking the formation of large Sargassum blooms. However, this year’s bloom could be the largest ever, covering more than 8,800 kilometers from the coasts of Africa to the Gulf of Mexico and weighing 10 million tons.

It is critical to improve Sargassum management. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) not only advocates best practices in Sargassum cleanup and removal, but also cooperates with governments and communities to develop policies, standards, and measures to protect public and environmental health. FAO is also promoting ways to repurpose Sargassum, turning it into products to provide additional employment and income. In fact, small businesses are already using Sargassum to make bricks, shoes, soaps and paper. Larger businesses are considering turning Sargassum into renewable energy, bioplastics, and compost.

1. Why does the author mention space in paragraph 1?
A.To stress the Sargassum bloom is massive.
B.To explain how currents and wind combine.
C.To show what the Gulf of Mexico looks like from space.
D.To demonstrate how the Sargassum movement was tracked.
2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Sargassum’s significance in the marine economy.
B.The process of Sargassum’s moving to the coast.
C.Sargassum’s contribution to reducing global warming.
D.The double-edged effects of Sargassum’s existence.
3. How do small businesses fight against Sargassum blooms?
A.They participate in cleanup activities.
B.They help rebuild marine ecosystems.
C.They create products from Sargassum.
D.They transform Sargassum into resources.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.Smelly Seaweed Bloom Heads to Florida
B.FAO Now Works on Reducing Marine Litter
C.Groundbreaking Project Turns Sargassum into Plastics
D.Sargassum is Changing the Beach Vacation in Mexico

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍库布齐沙漠绿化工程。

8 . Begun 30 years ago, the Kubuqi desert greening project has succeeded in not only controlling the fast growth of the seventh-largest desert in China, about the size of Kuwait, but also turning about 6,000 square kilometers of the desert — one-third of it — green.

The desert lies about 800 kilometers to the west of Beijing in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region (自治区) and the greening efforts have also controlled desertification (沙漠化) in the rest of the area.

The project, which began about 30 years ago, can be looked to as an example of efforts to advance green development, in order to create harmony between humans and nature, and leave a better environment for future generations.

The success of the project, which has been praised by the UN Environment Programme as an “eco-pioneer”, sets an example for successful desertification control and ecosystem improvement based on effective government policies, supported by investment (投资) in the eco-industry and combined with the efforts of local farmers. These three aspects are key to the success of the “Kubuqi model”.

Elion, a private ecology (生态) and investment company, has invested about 38billion yuan ($5.82 billion) in the Kubuqi desert-greening project since 1988 helping to lift about 102,000 local farmers out of poverty. For example, the locals grow a drought-tolerant (耐旱) plant, Chinese licorice, which is the most used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert soil, with the bacteria around the roots of the plants producing nitrogen(氮气).   Besides, Cistanche, another type of drought-tolerant herb, was introduced after the successful planting of licorice. Under the company’s guidance and with the local government’s support, the local people benefit from the   “environmental wealth”.

More companies should be encouraged to apply the “Kubuqi model” in other desert control projects in Inner Mongolia and neighboring Gansu province, where the climate conditions are similar but not quite the same, so as to further gain experience and enrich the model in practice. Showing it can be successfully applied in other areas will help promote the model worldwide.

1. What do we know about the Kubuqi greening project?
A.It increases the areas of desert.
B.It has turned all of the desert green.
C.It has achieved satisfying results.
D.It is applied all over the world.
2. Which is NOT the reason for the success of the   “Kubuqi model”?
A.Efforts of local farmers.
B.Government policies’ support.
C.Investment in the eco-industry.
D.Help from the UN Environment Programme.
3. How does the author develop paragraph 5?
A.By following the time order.
B.By giving examples.
C.By giving a definition (定义).
D.By making comparisons.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the greening project?
A.Negative.B.Doubtful.
C.Supportive.D.Indifferent.
