A cliff (悬崖) wall in the mountains of the Shennongjia Nature Reserve, China’s Hubei Province, is home to over 700 wooden boxes,     1     make up one of the country’s last sanctuaries (保护区) for native wild bees.

    2     (popular) known as the wall of hives (蜂箱), this unique bee sanctuary consists of over 700 wooden boxes     3     (place) on the side of a cliff wall, about 4,000 feet above sea level. The boxes are meant to attract the area’s wild bees into     4     (settle) in, and most of them are indeed inhabited by families of thousands of bees at any given time. Because the hives are tightly packed together, in order to reach the higher ones, beekeepers have to use the lower     5     (box) as steps, while trying to keep their balance. The ones near the top can only be     6     (access) by rope from the top of the cliff. It’s     7     difficult but necessary task, as the location of the beehives in an inaccessible place is meant to protect their inhabitants and their honey     8     bears.

What makes the Shennongjia Nature Reserve so special for beekeeping     9     (be) the presence of several different climates zones in a single area. Because of its unique     10     (appear) and location, the wall of hives has also become popular with tourists.

Rising sea levels are threatening coastlines in China, for example in     1     (city) such as Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou. If sea levels rise by one meter, more than 92,000 square kilometers of China’s coast could be flooded. This could potentially force 67 million people     2     (move) away. Over seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is the ocean. In recent hundreds of years many of our oceans     1    (damage) by human activity. It is on June 8     2     we recognize the importance of the oceans with World Ocean Day. On this day, activities take place around the world     3     let us appreciate how important the oceans are to us and how they are necessary for our     4    (survive). In the United States alone, over 100 million cell-phones are thrown away each year. Cell-phones are part of a     1     (grow) mountain of electronic wastes like computers and personal digital assistants.     2     electronic waste stream is increasing three times faster than traditional garbage as a whole.

Electronic devices contain valuable metals such as gold and silver. A Swiss study reported that while the weight of electronic goods     3     (represent) by precious metals was relatively small in comparison to total waste, the concentration (含量) of gold and other precious metals was     4     (high) in so-called e-waste than in naturally occurring minerals. Aside     5     that, electronic wastes also contain many poisonous metals. Even when the machines are recycled and the     6     (harm) metals are removed, the recycling process is often carried out in poor countries where many poisonous substances     7     (allow) to escape into the environment, or in practically uncontrolled ways     8     make more wastes generated.

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that most wastes are so dangerous that the tough     9     (restrict) are supposed to be put on the production, distribution, and use of electronic products, aimed     10     (tackle) this problem to the greatest extent.

When Hannah Herbst was in seventh grade, she found out her Ethiopian pen friend, Ruth ,was living in energy poverty(贫困）with fewer electricity, lights, medical     1     (supply) ,or even waste water control systems. “I realized the environment was     2    (importance) at a very young age. I have always been curious, and as a child, I developed my first interest     3    learning about the environment,” she said. So she     4    (create) an ocean energy device(装置）—BEACON，    5     changes the active movement of current energy from any moving body of water into    6     source of usable electricity.

Human beings are filling the world with waste. Every year, we pour million tons of rubbish     1     the eco-system. Eight million tons of that slips quietly into our oceans. Despite the statistics, change is     2     (worrying) slow. We're consuming more than ever. But we haven't yet invented     3     agreement for dealing with waste.

However, a few hardy companies are turning this tide of garbage into something reusable. TerraCycle is a “     4    (globe) leader in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste”.

Rubbish can include anything from sweet     5     (wrap) to cigarette butts (烟头). It’s the garbage     6    has you hesitating over your rows of recycling cans,     7     (hunt) in vain for the correct symbol. Even harmless items such as bottle caps,     8     are made from a blend of plastics, are not accepted by most recycling project.

TerraCycle's model is simple. The company solves this by getting you to do the work. Customers sort and drop the waste at specified collection points, ranging from schools to homes, or ships it for free. A small fee     9     (donate) to a non-profit organization of your choice for each kilo of waste     10     (receive). The process is paid for through partnerships with brands including Febreze, Colgate and Bic. They receive positive PR and reduce their financial penalties (处罚) for end-of-use waste.
