1 . Do you want to raise mentally strong kids? Stop doing the following things.

Ignoring Your Child’s Feelings

You’re implying that your children's feelings are wrong, when you say “Don’t worry about it. It’s not a big deal.”     1     And the key to living their best, life is about managing emotions. A healthier message is to say “I know you feel scared right now, but I also know you’re strong enough to face your fears.”

    2

It’s easy to give in when your children are losing their tempers. But each time you give them what they want, you teach your children that their unacceptable acts are an effective way to get their needs met. If you want to, raise mentally strong kids, stick to your limits.

Spoiling Your Children

3     But there’s a lot of research that shows just how unhealthy over protection is for kids. If they always get everything they want, they miss out on learning valuable life skills like self-discipline.     4    . Let them know what it’s like to experience disappointment, and teach them how to work for things they want to have.

Expecting Perfection

While high expectations are good for kids, setting the bar too high is likely to backfire. Whether you expect too much from your child on the sports field, or your academic expectations are unreasonable, kids who feel they can’t succeed are likely to stop trying.     5    .

A.Giving in to misbehavior
B.Keeping to your principles
C.Set limits on what you give your children
D.Teach them not to give up dreams easily
E.Kids need to have a wide variety of emotions
F.You may think its cute to spend more money on your children
G.They are also more likely to struggle with self- respect issues

2 . In many countries the best, and sometimes only, path to acceptance to a university is having high test scores or good grades. In the US, admissions officials almost always ask students to list the activities they are involved in outside of the classroom in their applications.     1     This method of considering both academic success and non-academic skills is known as holistic (全面的) admissions.

The more a school knows about a student’s interests, the more they understand the student.       2     The best American universities receive thousands of applications from both inside and outside the country. For example, Washington University had over 30,000 applicants for the 2017 school year. But it only had room to accept about 16 percent of them.

3     What would schools value more: playing basketball or singing in a musical group? Is it more important to spend weekends serving free food to homeless people or cleaning up a public park? Thinking about holistic admissions in this way is not helpful. Instead of trying to figure out which activities are better than others, you should think about which activities serve you best as an individual.     4

A student could explain their interest in reading many books or even exploring their home city.     5     Students, for example, can bring attention to their special qualities in the writing samples they provide, or the letters they ask teachers to write in support of them.

Students should trust that admissions officials will consider their personal history and what might have been available to them. The holistic method lets them pay more attention to the qualities they are looking for, not only academics.

A.Many universities only value test scores.
B.You can do almost anything, as long as it’s legal.
C.It’s difficult to choose an activity that suits you best.
D.Some students might wonder how to choose activities.
E.This is especially important for the top universities in the US.
F.These activities can show that a student possesses the qualities they are looking for.
G.Also, there are other places where a student can describe their non-academic interests.

3 . During the high school career, students may begin to question the importance of a college education. They might find themselves asking, “Why is it important to go to college?” The answer is that, more than ever, college graduates enjoy much greater opportunities available to them than those who have not received a college education.

For many high school students, being able to immediately generate an income after graduation is an appealing thought. They may also be affected by the rising cost of tuition, and while it is true that a higher education may be one of the largest expenses you will ever face, the importance of a college education has become quite evident in terms of earning potential within today’s economy.

Why should you go to college? One important answer to this question is more opportunity. As opposed to generations of the past, high school graduates today are unable to obtain high-paying jobs that were once available. The U.S. has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on knowledge, and the importance of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago. It serves as the gateway to better options and more opportunity.

There are additional reasons as to why it is important to go to college. When students experience a post secondary education, they have the opportunity to read books and listen to the lectures of top experts in their fields. This encourages students to think, ask questions, and explore new ideas, which allows for additional growth and development and provides college graduates with more opportunities in the job market over those who have not experienced a higher education.

The importance of a college education is also stressed because of the opportunity to gain valuable resources during the study. The more connections which are collected during your college career, the more options you will have when you begin your job search. Once you have ended your job search and have started your career, however, the importance of a college education has not been exhausted. Having a college degree often provides for greater promotion opportunity.

So, why should you go to college? The reasoning does not begin and end with the job aspect. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints, and though the importance of a college education is quite evident for many high school students, what is often not as clear is how they will pay for that education.

1. Why do some high school graduates prefer working to college study?
A.To obtain high-paying jobs.B.To earn money at an early age.
C.To spend less money on tuition.D.To adapt to the knowledge-based society.
2. The author most likely agrees with the idea that ____.
A.too much time is spent on lectures in college study
B.high school education is a gateway to more opportunity
C.college graduates gain more chances over others in job market
D.a college degree guarantees promotion in American companies
3. What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph after the last paragraph of the passage?
A.Refusing college education.B.Changing college education.
C.Receiving college education.D.Affording college education.
4. What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Importance of college education.B.Education means opportunity.
C.Which is more important, job or education?D.How to survive in the college.
5. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

I: Introduction       P: Point       Sp: Sub-point (次要点)       C: Conclusion

A.B.
C.D.

4 . In only two decades Asian Americans have become the fastest growing U.S. minority. As their children began moving up through the nation schools,it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was emerging. Their achievements are reflected in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an art degree.

Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that makes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education.

Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social isolation(隔离). Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.

A.feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of English
B.are afraid that their academic successes are not recognized
C.still worry about unfair treatment in society for their origin
D.generally feel it a shame to have to depend on their parents
2. What are the major factors that determine the success of Asian Americans?
A.A solid foundation in basic mathematics and Asian culture.
B.Hard work and intelligence.
C.Parents’ help and a limited knowledge of English.
D.Asian culture and the American educational system.
3. Few Asian American students major in human sciences mainly because ________.
A.their English is not good enough
B.they are afraid they might meet with unfair judgment in these areas
C.there is a wide difference between Asian and Western cultures
D.they know little about American culture and society
4. Why do “both explanations” (Para.3) worry Asian Americans?
A.They are afraid that they would again be separated from American society.
B.People will think that Asian students rely on their parents for success.
C.Asian Americans will be a threat to other minorities.
D.Americans fear the academic achievements made by Asian Americans.
5. Before 1952 in America,________.
A.Asian Americans could not be academically successful
B.there were few immigrants from East and Southeast Asia
C.immigrants were not equally treated by Asian Americans
D.immigrants from East and Southeast Asia were looked down upon

5 . In the United States, experts are calling for major changes to the admission process in higher education.

The National Center for Educational Statistics (or NCES) reported that U.S colleges and universities received more than million applications between 2013 and 2014 and admitted more than 5 million students. But the problem is not in the number of students, a new report says. The report is called ''Turning the Tide-Making Caring Common. ''

The report argues that the process schools use to choose students causes major problems. David Hawkins is the Executive Director for Educational Content and Policy. He says that most colleges and universities require many things from students when they apply.

Schools usually require an essay describing a student's interests or why they want to study at that school. The schools also ask for letters from teachers describing why a student is a good candidate. But, Hawkins says, schools are most concerned with a student's high school grades and standardized test results.

The Education Conservancy is an organization that fights to make higher education equal and available. Lloyd Thacker is the Executive Director of the Education Conservancy, saying that the college admission process has changed a lot.

''Over the past 30 years, college admissions have become more complex. '' He says that ranking systems for colleges and universities are a big part of the problem.

U.S. News and World Report is a media company that creates a list of what it calls ''America's Best Colleges''. The company bases the list on information collected from colleges and universities across the country. This information includes results of standardized tests like the SAT from all of a school's students. Higher average test results help put schools higher on the list.

Thacker claims, ''Too many students are learning to do whatever it takes in order to get ahead, even if that means sacrificing their own individuality, their health, their happiness and behavior…''

''The impact on students and on parents is that college is all about where you go. The rank has nothing to do with the quality of education that goes on at the college''.

The Harvard report states that the best way to change the admission process is by changing college applications.

1. When choosing students, colleges and universities attach greatest importance to .
A.their teachers' opinionB.their personal interest
C.their academic performanceD.their reasons for application
2. The media company ranks the schools on the basis of .
A.peoples' attitude towards the schools
B.employment rate of its graduates
C.the schools' teaching quality
D.information like test results
3. Which of the following does Lloyd Thacker probably agree with?
A.Colleges are supposed to admit more and more students.
B.It is necessary to apply for a proper university by referring to the rank.
C.There is little relationship between colleges rank and the quality of education.
D.The better the applicants grades are, the more likely they will be admitted.
4. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Higher Rankings Matter a Great Deal
B.Colleges Look to Change Admission Process
C.Colleges Admission Process Makes a Difference
D.Testing Results Determine Students' Fate

7 . It’s reported that the American College Board has made several changes to the SAT test to help more poor students receive higher education. It offers a scoring criterion beyond its own SAT test, which measures only oral and math skills. The new tool is designed to help admissions officers find if applicants have risen above limitations in their social or economic circumstances by expressing a particular characteristic: resourcefulness(足智多谋).

The new criterion, called ECD, has been tried by 50 colleges over the past year and will be carried out by 150 institutions this fall. Relying on public data , it looks at 15 factors(因素) in neighborhoods and schools that might passively influence a candidate’s college readiness. These statistics include crime rates, education levels, joblessness, and the family members that receive food stamps. It applicants come from a highly disadvantaged background yet have proper but perhaps not high SAT scores , a college might then admit them.

Resourcefulness shows an ability to seek support outside one’s self. It requires a clear purpose in learning. The new tool “shines a light on students who have shown remarkable resourcefulness to overcome challenges and achieve more with less,” says David Coleman, the College Board’s president.

The ECD also has the advantage of not taking race into consideration in admissions, a practice being increasingly closed off by the Supreme Court and many states. At the same time, in stressing a key quality for academic success, it may help prevent discrimination in admissions.

The tool is not an absolute measure of resourcefulness. It misses other types of circumstances, such as personal or family problems. Colleges must weigh many factors in admissions. Still, it could lead to a greater focus on character in education beyond the traditional pursuit (追求) of knowledge and career skills. Graduates who have stood out despite their hardships are highly desired by today’s employers.

1. Which people can benefit from the new criterion?
A.Students from poor families.B.Students doing well at maths.
C.Students having much money.D.Students with good spoken skills.
2. What are the new criteria when judging a candidate?
A.The attitudes to schools.B.The remarks from colleges.
C.The difficulties a candidate will face.D.The institutions a candidate will study in.
3. What is the advantage of ECD?
A.It can make applicants successful.B.It can improve the ability of races.
C.It can provide clear learning purposes.D.It can treat applicants equally.
4. Which graduates do employers prefer?
A.Those with excellent qualities.
B.Those having experienced hardships.
C.Those making progress in difficult situations.
D.Those with the traditional pursuit of knowledge.

10 . When a big exam is coming up, you probably feel anxious about any wasted time and want to begin school as soon as you probably can.

But tens of thousands of British high school students will soon be getting up later. They’re taking part in a new experiment by Oxford University to see if later classes can improve their exam results.

Grades 10 students in the UK have to take the nationwide General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams. They have to pass these exams in order to study more advanced courses, and later apply for universities.

The Oxford University project means that GCSE students from more than 100 schools across England will start school at 10 am, more than one hour later than the current start time (8:50 am).

The project is based on scientific evidence that teenagers are “out of sync(同步)” with traditional school hours, the Telegraph reported. And what they need is more sleep in the morning.

“We know that something funny happens when you’re a teenager, in that you seem to be out of sync with the world,” said professor Colin Epsie, who is leading the study. “Your parents think it’s because you are lazy and opinionated(固执己见的)and everything will be OK if you could get to sleep earlier. But science is telling us that teenagers need to sleep more in the mornings.”

Everyone follows a natural cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Biology has decided that teenagers go to sleep around midnight and don’t feel fully awake until 9-10 am, according to scientists. That’s two hours later than adults. And their body clocks stay like this until the age of around 21 for males, and 19 for females.

“Society provides school for learning, but the brain provides sleep. So we are exploring the possibility that if you delay the schools start time until 10 am, that will improve learning performance,” said Epsie.

The results could be positive, based on previous studies.

An early study at the UK’s Monkseaton High School in 2009 found that starting an hour later improved grades in core subjects by 19 percent.

The Oxford project is expecting to publish the results in 2018. It’s time to wait and see whether scientists will give us an excuse to get up late.
