文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍美国野火的危险区域正在增加,并指出造成这种局面人类有不可推卸的责任。

3 . Last year, wildfire spread through Boulder, Colorado. It wasn’t a hot summer day. It wasn’t a forested neighborhood. It was winter in the suburbs (郊区). More than 1,000 homes and buildings burned.

Large parts of the country that don’t have wildfires are now at risk. They include nearly 80 million homes and buildings. That’s what new data shows. Over the next 30 years, the risk will only grow. The group First Street Foundation created a program called Fire Factor. People can go to a website to learn what their wildfire risk is in 2022 and in 2052. Right now, about 16% of Americans live in risky places. By 2052, that will go up to 21%.

California will likely suffer a lot from wildfire. That’s partly because it is so big and partly because of its weather. So California will be on the top of the at-risk list. But nearly half of all at-risk Americans in 2052 will live in the southern half of the U.S. The South will be home to the largest number of people at high risk: 32 million. States like Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, and North and South Carolina will be “in the line of fire,” so to speak, and so will southwestern states like Arizona and New Mexico.

People are doing many things to make fire risk worse. They are moving to places where wildfire is a natural yearly event. They are building homes right next to plants and trees that can burn. Climate change has increased heat and dryness. That means any spark (火花) at any time can cause a big fire.

As with many climate threats, wildfires put minorities (少数群体) at the greatest risk. By 2052, about 44% of all Native Americans will live in places at major risk from wildfire. Nearly 1 in 4 Hispanics will. People who don’t speak English or own cars will have a harder time learning about and getting away from a fast-moving fire.

1. What problem did Boulder have last year?
A.Strange weather.B.Huge loss of forests.
C.Widespread wildfires.D.A rapid drop in populations.
2. What does the new data show?
A.About 16% of Americans are safe now.
B.The risky areas of wildfire are increasing.
C.The risk of wildfire will be lowered in 2052.
D.Nearly 80 million homes are burnt down by wildfire.
3. Which of the following will be the most dangerous in 2052?
A.Florida.B.South Carolina.
C.California.D.New Mexico.
4. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Reasons why wildfire risk is worse.B.Dangers humans may face in the future.
C.Actions taken by humans to prevent fire.D.Suggestions for self-protection in wildfire.
5. How many Hispanics will live in risky places by 2052?
A.About 16%.B.About 21%.
C.About 25%.D.About 44%.

Gary McKee ran 365 marathons in as many days to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

Gary McKee, 53, from Cleator Moor in Cumbria raised his arms in victory and was cheered by a crowd of supporters as he completed his 365th marathon of the year on New Year’s Eve. As of 4 pm on Saturday, he had raised more than £ 890,000 for the charities Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospice at Home West Cumbria, just shy of (缺少) his £1 million fundraising target. The father of three has gone through 22 pairs of sports shoes and has run 9,563 miles in rain, snow and sunshine to raise money for the charities.

“The support has been amazing and it always is and the West Cumbrians get behind us, but cancer affects everybody so it isn’t just a West Cumbrian thing, it’s a national thing,” said Gary. “I just hope that people do get behind us and we do raise those million pounds.” Gary has not only raised money for two fantastic charities, but he has also sprinkled magic on the local community and brought people together to support him with the challenge.

Chris Young, 29, ran 90 marathons with Mr. McKee. “Gary set a good example to me this year when I began running frequently with him and has given me both physical and mental resilience (适应力) that I don’t know if I would have ever discovered in myself in a million years. I know I don’t just speak for myself on that front as he has inspired not just me or the few, but the entire local community and beyond,” said Chris, “This challenge has raised a great amount of money for two fantastic charities, but the impact Gary has provided to the community and people around him is immeasurable. A lot of people’s lives will be much better off thanks to Gary’s efforts, mine included.”

When I was seven years old, I saw my mother making doll clothes. She told me that they were for the poor people, so I never gave it another thought. On Christmas morning when I opened my present, there were those beautiful doll clothes. My mother just smiled and said, “They are for the poor people. We’re poor.”

When I was nine, my greatest desire in life was to own a pogo stick (弹簧高跷). But my mother told me that we simply couldn’t afford one. A few days before Christmas, my parents and I went shopping. While my mother and I were paying the money, my dad came with a long box. I remember wondering at that very moment if it was a pogo stick in that box. After we arrived back at home my dad put the box in the barn. While my parents were away, I shuck out to the barn to find the box. I was so excited and I knew that as soon as I opened that magical box, my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom. And so Christmas morning was disappointing. After all the wrapping paper was cleaned up, my dad came back from the barn with a beautiful pogo stick. I couldn’t believe it, how they were able to get the money for it and how they tricked me with the broom. My parents probably laughed quietly when they played the trick on me and I wondered if they were watching me from the window as I went out to the barn secretly for my Christmas present.

Although we didn’t have much money, my parents gave me the most important gift of all, much love. We had love and we had joy.

9 . I fell in love with the Little Free Library concept years ago on vacation. The concept of free literature-sharing boxes posted in neighborhoods and public spaces hooked me. For a booklover, this represented bliss(快乐). At home, my bedside table sprouts(长出)books and from the floor rises a mountainous to-be-read pile. My husband wasn’t the least bit surprised when I suggested starting our own Little Free Library- As a writer and introvert(内向的人), I welcomed the idea of saying hello to other booklovers on occasion.

The following winter, my husband built a copy of our Irish garden shed(棚屋)with a framed glass door on the front and, in the spring, mounted(安装)it on a post in front of our house. We filled the shelves with books, and since then, visitors have refilled them with literary fiction, romances, mysteries, science fiction, cowboy westerns, young-adult fiction, poetry, how-to’s, self-help and a range of other nonfiction.

For a time after COVID-19 first struck, public libraries shut down, and Amazon prioritized the delivery of essential and high-demand items. Books were less easily attained. Traffic to our library increased. I posted reminders about handwashing, and still, readers kept coming.

We wondered if we should close the Little Free Library and revisited(再次讨论)our original motivations for hosting it: to facilitate the exchange of books, to create a sense of community. Reading provides the necessary relief to the emotional crush(压力)of life. With this in mind, we added a written reminder on staying safe in the library.

Through my teens, reading transported me to other places and eras. Books taught me about life and how people overcame adversity(逆境). I no longer felt alone in the things I struggled against.

Aside from the entertainment books offer, studies show that reading exposes us to other cultures and perspectives. Literature sheds light on the justice to be found in social inclusion and community cohesion(凝聚). Self-esteem and understanding grow in equal measure as we come to understand ourselves and our place in the world.

During this pandemic, the Little Free Library has reinforced the importance of literature and reading to our emotional and mental health. It’s become an alternate means of creating a community of people with mutual regard for humanity and the written word. We are together even when apart.

1. What attracted the author to host the Little Free Library?
A.The emotional crush of life.
B.The free literature-sharing concept.
C.The sense of self-esteem and social justice.
D.The importance of exchanging books with each other.
2. What is the husband’s attitude toward building the Little Free Library?
A.Objective.B.Supportive.
C.Indifferent.D.Doubtful.
3. What happened to the author’s Little Free Library during the pandemic?
A.It was not allowed to be used.
B.The number of books dropped sharply.
C.It was getting more popular than before.
D.Readers questioned the motivations for hosting it
4. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A.How reading shaped the author’s growth.
B.How we facilitated the exchange of books.
C.How the Little Free Library further developed.
D.How literature played a role in community building.
5. What is the benefit of the Little Free Library during the pandemic?
A.It has offered solutions to the pandemic.
B.It has relieved the pressure of public libraries.
C.It has exposed readers to foreign perspectives.
D.It has helped create a united and cohesive community.
