6 . Since the beginning of my scientific training, I was encouraged to seek multiple mentors (导师) to help me find my way. With many efforts, I became comfortable, confident, and strategic in building my network of mentors.    1

Cast a wide net.

Sending cold contacts was scary, so I focused on the thrill of emailing people who had some of the coolest jobs I'd ever heard of. If I was inspired by someone's work, I emailed. If

I loved the way they ran their lab, I emailed. If I was interested in learning more about their company, I emailed.     2     At last, I got dozens of informational interviews that helped me in my ideal job.

    3

As a grad student, I met someone at a conference who I hoped would be a future mentor—and followed up with a five-paragraph email. Their reply was simple, “I cannot respond to this. Too long.” Over the years, I learned to clearly include the what, the ask, and the when —for example, a 30-minute meeting to talk about X, offering three or four specific times. A clear, concise email encourages a quick, positive response.

Consider the context (情景).

In graduate school, I asked a senior faculty member to serve as my departmental adviser.     4     A few months later, he left the institution. I realized the move must have already been in the works when I asked, and his response didn't reflect negatively on me; he was just predicting his own changing circumstances. When evaluating responses or advice, remember that everyone has their own affairs and concerns.

Come prepared.

5     I came to every conversation with at least 10 questions, arranged in categories including shared experiences, career goals, and advice. Coming prepared helped me respect other people's time and use these meetings wisely.

A.Get to the point.
B.Here's what I have learned.
C.Prepare for negative responses.
D.My one strength was preparation.
E.My mentors offered many suggestions to me.
F.Though a few people failed to respond, many did.
G.The response was a direct without any explanation, and I was left confused.

7 . Experts using a high-tech laser scanner (激光扫描仪) have discovered thousands of ancient Maya buildings hidden under the thick forests of northern Guatemala, officials said Thursday. Some 60, 000 buildings were found over the past two years in a scan of an area in the northern department of El Peten between Mexico and Belize, said Marcello Canuto, one of the projects’ lead researchers.

These findings are a “breakthrough in Maya archeology(考古),” Canuto said.

The new discoveries in this Central American country include city centers with sidewalks, homes, wide steps, farming facilities and so on, said Canuto, an archaeologist at Tulane University in the United States.

Among the finds was a 30-meter high pyramid (金字塔) that had been earlier recognized as a natural hill in Tikal. Also discovered in Tikal: a series of holes and a 14 kilometer-long wall.

The Maya development reached its height in what is present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of Belize, El Salvador and Honduras between 250 and 950 CE. Researchers now believe that the Maya had a population of 10 million, which is “much higher” than previous judgment, Canuto said.

The project depended on a remote (远程的) sensing method known as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Aircraft with a LiDAR scanner produced 3D maps of the surface by using light in the form of laser linked to a GPS system.

The technology helped researchers discover sites much faster than using traditional archeological methods. “Now it is no longer necessary to cut through the jungle to see what’s under it,” said Canuto.

Details of the research will appear in a documentary to air on February 11 on the National Geographic TV channel, said Minister of Culture and Sports Jose Luis Chea.

1. What did Canuto think of the new discoveries in the past two years?
A.Leading.B.Frightening.C.Annoying.D.Puzzling.
2. Which one is NOT LiDAR’s advantage?
A.It saves time in discovering site.
B.It is more convenient for researchers to work in forest.
C.Explorers have to go deep into the jungle to research.
D.Research can be done at a distance.
3. According to the new discoveries, Maya might have been a nation________.
A.that lay in AfricaB.that was less developed
C.whose pyramid was made of a hillD.with a surprisingly large population
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To inform readers of the new discoveries about Maya.
B.To introduce a new method used to discover Maya buildings.
C.To show Maya development was of great influence.
D.To tell us a new documentary will be launched on TV in Feb.

10 . Many livestock farmers (牧场主) in the western world are becoming worried by a longer-term threat to their income from the growing popularity of vegetarian (素食的) diets. Here comes the question whether to eat meat or not. Before airing our view, we should consider seriously the three reasons that vegetarians give for refusing animal products.

The easiest point to argue against is that eating meat is unhealthy. Nothing is healthier than a varied diet, including fiber, vegetable, fruit and meat. Although studies show that eating red and processed meat may raise the risk of some cancers, it is important not to overstate the effect. This week, for example, Cancer Research UK reported that eating an extra piece of bacon every day raised the risk of bowel cancer by 20 per cent. But that means just eight extra (largely curable) cases in every 10,000 people over six years.

Our treatment of farm animals is an issue that vegetarians find more troubling. A common view is that raising animals in a small area cause unacceptable suffering. In this regard, agricultural authorities should take up the responsibility to enforce welfare standards that give each animal enough space to stand and move around comfortably. Also, consumers have an important role to play in improving conditions for farm animals. For example, the dislike of “battery hens”led to an EU ban in 2012 on keeping chickens in barren cages.

The environmental impact of livestock farming is its greatest problem in a century. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that farmed animals account for 14.5% of greenhouse gas emission. Although changes in grazing(放牧)practices could substantially reduce the environmental impact of livestock farming, it will always use more resources than producing the same number of calories from plant crops. Meat production should focus on the world’s traditional grasslands, without taking up new land.

1. Which of the following is NOT the reason against animal products given by vegetarians?
A.It harms human health.
B.It causes animal suffering.
C.It damages the environment.
D.It threatens the income of farmers.
2. Why does the author mention the report from Cancer Research UK in paragraph 2?
A.To prove that eating too much meat is unhealthy.
B.To persuade people out of eating too much meat.
C.To show that eating meat is not as unhealthy as vegetarians think.
D.To present the fact that eating too much bacon may cause cancer.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards raising animals in a small area?
A.Favorable.B.Negative.
C.Indifferent.D.Unclear.
4. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The changes in feeding practices.
B.The challenges that livestock farming faces.
C.The negative effects of livestock farming on the environment.
D.The measures to reduce the environmental impact of livestock farming.
