文章大意:这是一篇议论文,主要讲了不管是重要还是不很重要的场合,早点去不要迟到的重要性和好处。

1 . The early bird catches the worm, right?

There was a time in my life when it seemed I couldn’t advance at work. I had this coworker who was always one step ahead of me.     1     But for some reason, my normally strict boss seemed to love him.

Then one morning I headed into work half an hour early so I could also leave early to catch my flight for a weekend vacation. When I got there, my coworker and boss were chatting over coffee. I joined in and realized they had been having these morning chats for months!

2     By missing out on these small morning coffee chats, I was missing out on building an important connection for my career. So it’s important that we look at how the time that we arrive at our events is affecting our lives.

Often, we rank things based on how we understand the importance of our punctuality for that event. How early would you show up to something like a doctor’s appointment? Do you get there right on time, or 15 or more minutes earlier?

Think about your job. If it’s more casual and relaxed, do you always show up on time?     3     Did you ever find yourself getting in trouble at work for being late?

Now think about personal events. If you went to a friend’s birthday party or their dinner, would you show up on time? Consider how you show up for even more casual hangouts, like, checking in with your parents.

    4

When we show up early, we give ourselves the chance to reduce stress about missing out or making anybody else upset.     5

A.Look at a job where it’s very strict.
B.It’s safe to say I never showed up late again.
C.He wasn’t that much better than me at our job.
D.Have you ever shown up late to a flight on purpose?
E.Missing out something small in our life doesn’t matter.
F.Now, honestly, ask yourself, could you start these things earlier?
G.And we also account for any emergencies that might cause further panic.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了自尊心强的好处及如何培养自尊。

2 . People who possess high self-esteem are able to commit better and produce a greater bond in relationships with others. Dr. Douglas feels that most people do not value themselves, but with love and self-respect anyone can be above normality and grasp success with the family, the office, or others.

We have become too reliant on intelligence, beauty, and money for our own self-esteem. The loss of esteem reduces the will and ability to set and reach goals. In a series of readings Douglas teaches how to avoid negative statements, how to change them into self-facing behavior, and how to take charge of your mental attitude. Where other motivational and self-help works stop with the theoretical plan for success, Douglas takes everyday examples and puts them into his books. From raising children who believe in themselves to using self-esteem to help bridge the gap in the workplace, he gives readers concrete solutions to the problems that might ruin their interpersonal relations.

Self-esteem building comes from filling your thoughts with positive affirmations (肯定) and learning to react to failures with motivation instead of self-destruction. These lessons are valuable for anyone who feels that life is even slightly out of control. People who feel they have adequate esteem can learn to use it to make their success grander, faster, and more beneficial for others. Douglas approaches this process of self-development as a means of more than creating good things for the individual but also for setting up keys for influencing good things for others.

For more than thirty years, Dr. Douglas has addressed more than two million people on topics from time management to speaking effectively to raising drug-free children. He is the author of fifteen books, including How to Make a Habit of Succeeding.

1. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.Most people behave well enough.B.Self-respect means being above normality.
C.Self-esteem matters much.D.Committing better equals greater success.
2. Why does Douglas put everyday examples into bis books?
A.To be reliant on self-esteem.B.To set and reach goals.
C.To avoid negative thoughts.D.To offer concrete solutions.
3. What does the author advise those whose life is slightly out of control to do?
A.Learn to be positive.B.Face it unmotivatedly.
C.Admit self-destruction.D.Ask for help.
4. What’s the most important to be self-development?
A.Influencing the individual.B.Influencing more people.

6 . Author Walter Dean Myers died at the age of 76 after a brief illness. Walter Dean Myers was the author of more than 100 books for children and young adults and received many top awards.

The prolific author was loved for his vivid description of the lives of African American children, and for writing books for young people that covered different subjects. “Myers has written about all those subjects with deep understanding and a hardwon, qualified sense of hope, ” said Leonard S. Marcus in 2008.

He was born in 1937 and was adopted by Florence Dean and Herbert after his mother died while giving birth to his younger sister. They loved him very much and his mother read to him from a very young age. Reading pushed him to discover worlds beyond his landscape.

He began writing at an early age. He wrote well in high school and an English teacher recognized this and advised him to keep on writing no matter what happened to him. “It’s what you do, ” she said.

He dropped out of high school at 17 and joined the army. After finishing his service, he entered a dark period in his life. Myers began writing at night to pull himself through that miserable time. In an essay published in The New York Times earlier this year, Myers described how a short story by James Arthur Baldwin helped change the course of his life. “I didn’t love the story, but I was lifted by it, ” he wrote, “for it took place in Harlem, and it was a story concerned with black people like those I knew. By humanizing the people who were like me, Baldwin’s story also humanized me. The story gave me a permission that I didn’t know I needed, the permission to write about my own landscape, my own map.”

“I write books for the troubled boy I once was, ” he wrote, “and for the boy who lives within me still.”

1. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A.How popular Myers was.
B.How Myers became successful.
C.What makes Myers’ works popular.
D.What people think of Myers’ works.
2. What does the underlined word “prolific” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Productive.B.Wealthy.C.Conservative.D.Humorous.
3. Who discovered Myers’ writing talent?
A.James Arthur Baldwin.
B.His mother.
C.Leonard S. Marcus.
D.One of his teachers.
4. Why was the short story by James Arthur Baldwin so important for Myers?
A.It helped him survive the dark period.
B.It inspired him to pursue his writing career.
C.He learned many writing techniques from it.
D.The author of the story permitted him to write.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Nothing will ever be the same again,” Ally said to herself.

Ally's father died last summer. It wasn't fair, Ally thought. Dad was young and had never been sick. Why had his heart suddenly stopped? Ally sank slow into her father's favorite chair and looked at his picture on the bookcase. Ally smiled. “I miss you, Dad,” she said softly.

At this moment, she felt a hand smoothing her hair and looked up. “Why don't you come outside with me, Ally?” her mother asked. “The birds are nesting in the woods. By this time last year you'd already taken dozens of pictures.”

But her mother must know birdwatching wouldn't be the same this year. How could it be? Ally wondered. Ever since she could remember she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods for the special wood warbler (林柳莺). “I'll be out in while, I promise,” she answered.

After her mother left, Ally reached for the photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover was a photo of a tiny yellow bird with blue-gray wings and black eyes. Dad cut it from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on Dad's face when he showed her the pretty bird.

“I can't believe someone spotted this little guy way up here in New Jersey,” he said. “Wood warblers are usually found in the south, not this far north. I bet if we search really hard, Ally, we'll see this little guy together someday.”

Ally closed her eyes. She loved thinking about the times she and Dad had spent searching the woods for the little bird. They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. He was her best friend.
