文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了大众传媒在教育中的作用。

2 . Role of Mass Media in Education

In today’s advanced world, where everything is changing at lightning speed, mass media plays an important role.     1     It isn’t limited to the four walls of a classroom anymore. Mass media is responsible for this development to a great extent. The major roles mass media plays in the education field are:

Universal reach

Mass media has connected people like never before. Education is something which aims to have a universal reach. Mass media has helped to bridge that gap enormously.     2

Storage of information

Mass media allows storing information which can be accessed from anywhere at any time. It is literally accessible, at our fingertips, which saves a lot of time and energy.     3

No physical restrictions

4     But it is not the case now. Mass media has reduced distances and made the world smaller for good. For instance, it is not necessary to be present at a place physically to gain knowledge now.

Fruitful results

Another huge advantage of current technological innovations in mass media is the increased memory capability of students. Many scientific pieces of research have proven that delivering lectures via an audio-visual format (视听格式) is quite effective.     5     All this has only been made possible because of mass media.

A.This results in the reduction of false information.
B.That being said, education is also advancing day by day.
C.Therefore, it serves as a rather useful resource in the field of education.
D.One of the major disadvantages before mass media was a physical restriction.
E.Mass media consists of the tools used for communicating information and ideas.
F.In other words, it is now within everyone’s reach and making the world a better place.
G.It has a more positive impact on the memory power of the brain than an audio lecture.

Besides such ethical concerns, the legal situations the autonomous vehicle industry is likely to be confronted with have     1     heated debates. In this emerging industry, manufacturing and programming standards are not yet     2    . Moreover, the quality and safety of the technology used in self-driving cars is still being challenged. This could lead to extraordinary cases like who should be held     3     when self-driving cars are involved in accidents — should it be the driver, the software programmer or the manufacturer? Manufacturing and programming standards first have to be agreed upon to make it possible for law courts to decide who is at fault when things go wrong. 文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章指出:“hello”这个词所承载的信息可以让听者对说话者的性格做出判断,研究发现人们的印象基于语调,强有力的声音给人更可靠的感觉。

4 . Consider what goes through your mind after you’ve taken your seat on an airplane. You’ve not seen the captain, but his or her voice comes over the air. “Hello, this is your captain speaking.” Are you about to fly the friendly skies? What you probably don’ realize is that you do make quick judgments (判断) based on very few factors the moment you hear “hello”.

Experts have discovered that “hello” carries enough information for listeners to draw judgments about the speakers personality, such as how reliable (可信赖的) he or she is. They recorded 64 students reading a telephone conversation. The word “hello” was then picked from each recording, and 320 different students listened to that word through a computer. The students were asked to score the voices according to personality, including attractiveness and warmth, giving them points from l to 10. Although every voice was played in one third a second, the students formed an opinion quickly.

It is amazing that from such short voices of speech they can get such an obvious impression of a person. And whether it is correct, their impressions are mostly the same as what the other listeners get. The research also suggests that people’ impressions are based on the tone (语调) of voice. Men and women who present the strength of their voices are regarded as more reliable.

The speed with which the students made their judgments makes much sense. Deciding who to trust can be important to your survival. There’s no point in listening to someone talk for 5 minutes to decide if they’re reliable or not — you could be dead already. The discovery may help improve computer-made voice technologies, experts say.

1. Why does the author mention “the captain” in paragraph 1?
A.To present a fact.B.To make a prediction.
C.To introduce a new research.D.To explain the rule on a plane.
2. How did the students tell the speakers’ personality?
A.Making telephone calls.
B.Playing voices at high speeds.
C.Picking “hello” from conversations.
D.Listening to and scoring the records of “hello”.
3. What can we do to leave a good first impression?
A.Make a long speech.B.Give powerful voice.
C.Follow other listeners.D.Speak as fast as possible.
4. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.The secret to tallying for 5 minutes.B.The different ways you say “hello”.
C.The application in voice technologies.D.The method of listening with attention.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了由于过度捕捞浅水鱼类的数量已经严重下降,以及由此导致的后果。

5 . There has been a very serious decline in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic.     1

Conservation measures will have to be put in place if these deep-sea fish are to survive. Research on five such species shows that numbers have declined by between 87 percent and 98 percent.     2     Many species could well disappear completely if the present trend continues. These are species that have been swimming in our oceans for hundreds of millions of years.

The problem is emphasized by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less than twenty years. Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years.     3     The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of particular concern, as large fish tend to produce more offspring than small ones.

4     The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding (快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.

The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry.     5     Measures must be taken to not only conserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.

A.Billions of people rely on fish for protein.
B.Many people now choose not to eat deep-sea fish.
C.Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low.
D.This puts them in the category of “critically endangered”.
E.None of these facts has been taken into account by the fishing industry.
F.Overfishing is a major cause of decline in populations of ocean wildlife.
G.This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.

10 . During the 1930s, the Great War broke out. A 25-year-old American soldier, probably never thought that his life would change forever when he volunteered to go to France.

One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five-year-old girl from the bushes shivering with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.

During the war, it was impossible to find the child’s family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.

For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage, the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.

After hearing his story, a French journalist started to investigate the story, and all government files were read in detail.
