1 . A recent study from Penn State has indicated that interactive screen time such as texting’ and gaming is harmful to adolescents’ sleep. The research casts light on how different types of screen usage can variably impact sleep patterns in teens.

The study was focused on the sleep habits of 15-year-olds. For the analysis, the team conducted daily surveys with 475 adolescents, inquiring about their screen-based activities; including communication methods and entertainment preferences. Besides, the researchers employed special instruments to accurately track the teens' sleep duration (持续期) over a week. These devices, typically worn on the wrist, provided insight into the participants’ activity levels to infer sleep patterns.

The study showed that teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating digitally and around 1 hour playing video games. The experts found that those engaging in interactive screen time before bed spent approximately 30 minutes longer falling asleep compared to those who avoided such activities. And that is what makes the researchers most concerned.

And it was not just interactive screen time before bed that affected kids’ sleep, said the researchers. For each hour that kids spent playing video games beyond their usual routine during the day, their sleep was delayed for about 10 minutes.

“For a child, losing 30 minutes of sleep at night is significant. It makes it especially arduous for them to get up in the morning for school,” said lead author of the study and postdoctoral scholar David Reichenberger. “Without enough sleep, kids are at increased risk of obesity, as well as poor cognition (认知), emotion regulation and mental health.”

“Addressing the problem of what parents can do to help protect their teens’ sleep, its a tricky situation. These tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for an adolescent’s health and well-being, then you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed,” said David.

1. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.What the participants did in the study.
B.How the participants were selected.
C.What the purpose of the research was.
D.How the research was conducted.
2. Which of the following has the greatest impact on kids’ sleep?
A.Playing video games for 1 hour during the day.
B.Engaging in interactive screen time before bed.
C.Communicating digitally for 20 minutes in the morning.
D.Delaying the regular sleeping time for half an hour.
3. What does the underlined word “arduous” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Common.B.Important.C.Difficult.D.Practical.
4. Why does David regard the situation as “tricky”?
A.Digital devices bring both convenience and harm.
B.Interactive activities play an important part in modern life.
C.Being involved in screen time is harmful to children’s health.
D.Increasing kids’ sleeping time may affect their academic performance.

2 . These days students are busy with "activities" that require only the movement of a hand, like surfing the net, playing video games, and chatting in social networks—and that's definitely not good. Here we'll try to help you make a choice.

Traditional Team Sports

Team sports like basketball, volleyball, football, and softball are probably the most popular sports activities among students. First of all, they don't need perfect skills and are easily accessible. You will likely be able to choose from several options along with your location. Besides keeping fit and healthy, team sports can help you become more responsible, focused, active and learn how to be a team player.

Dancing & Yoga

Want to have fun doing sports while listening to cool music and relaxing? What can be a better idea than a dancing class?Tango, salsa, hip-hop, swing… You can find the one you really enjoy. The greatest part is that you can perform in concerts, festivals and competitions.

Outdoor Exploration Sports

If you're into sports activities which let you explore the world and learn new skills at the same time, here are several ideas for you: hiking, rowing, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, cycling… These challenging activities can be done with your best friend, or even alone. You'll see fantastic scenery, have the time of your life, and forget about your daily routine.

Unusual Sports

Are there any better unusual and fun sports games for students? The following three are rather experimental and challenging and worth a try.

Quidditch is adapted from the pages of Harry Potter books. Certainly, the players don't ride brooms in real-life circumstances, but the game is still very entertaining.

Roller Derby is a full-contact sport played on wheels by both men and women. It's nothing like any other sports experience.

Kickball is another not-so-widely-spread kind of high-energy, fun sports activity for students.

1. What feature do traditional team sports share?
A.They need some special equipment.
B.They require determination and patience.
C.They promote team spirit and responsibility.
D.They bring along opportunities of winning medals.
2. Which should a student choose if he is a Harry Potter fan?

3 . As global warming melts(融化)their snowy habitats, wolverines in the United States have been:listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, earning them more federal(联邦的)protection. The move comes after years of legal argument over the survival prospects of the animals due to climate change and human activities.

Currently, an estimated 300 wild wolverines remain in the lower 48 states, living in the Rocky and Cascade mountains of Wyoming, Washington, Montana, Idaho and Oregon. These creatures rely on a snowy, cold environment. They mainly feed on rodents and rabbits, but they also collect the dead bodies of larger animals. Sometimes, they store the bodies for later consumption, using the freezing temperatures of their high-altitude habitats to refrigerate the food.

However, as global temperatures continue to rise, finding places to store food and build dens(兽穴)will become increasingly challenging for the animals, scientists say. The USFWS estimates wolverines could lose 23 percent of their habitats within the next 30 years because of climate change — and 63 percent over the next 75 years.

Wolverines nearly went extinct in western U. S. in the 1920s because of hunting and trapping for their fur. However, they've managed to hang on — and in May, biologists reported a rare sighting of a wolverine in California, the state's second in 101 years.

Officials have debated for decades whether wolverines in the U. S. deserve protection. States, farm bureaus, fossil fuel groups and snowmobile associations have opposed protection, while various conservation groups have fought to have wolverines listed under the Endangered Species Act.

In October 2023 the wolverine was officially listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and the USA government reached a final decision on the federal protection. "We have not paid enough attention to giving this small animal what it needs," says Jeffrey Copeland, a retired biologist with the U. S. Forest Service. "It may be too little. But in this type of situation, it's a good step that we have taken."

1. Which of the following is a reason for the decline in wolverines' population?
A.Human agricultural activities in general.
B.Loss of habitats due to climate change.
C.The wrong decision of the federal government.
D.Competition with other animals for food.
2. What does the rare sighting of wolverines in California show?
A.Wolverines have become an endangered species.
B.Wolverines are reintroduced to western U. S.
C.Wolverines have found new habitats.
D.Wolverines have been forced to adapt to survive.
3. What can be learned about wolverines according to the text?
A.They rely on dead bodies of larger animals for food.
B.They live in a snowy cold environment.
C.They can easily find places to store food.
D.They are extinct in western America.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.New Challenges for Wolverines
B.Wolverines Survive in Western U. S.
C.Wolverines Win Federal Protection
D.Human Activities Bring an End to Wolverines

It was one of those super cold Saturdays in New York. I woke up with my son Bisher, who just turned 13 and was in 6th Grade. He was well organized and had an alarm clock so he woke up on time. When Bisher was taking a bath, I had already made breakfast for my family and we were ready to leave. My pet dogs Milo and Jego were having their mealtime too.

I was going to my parents' farm with my family in my truck, like I always do during winter. It's an hour's drive from New York City to the farm. I was driving a Mitsubishi Triton and the dogs were at the back of the truck.

An hour later, when we all reached the farm, Bisher got so excited that he started to talk to the dogs and imagine what fun they would have during this holiday. When I opened the fence, it was 2:15 pm. In no time I saw my parents' dogs—Jamie and Rocky—rushing into sight, wagging their tails and barking and howling to show their excitement. With all this noisy welcome of dogs, my mom, who was in the kitchen, hurried to open the main door and hugged us tight. After all the meeting and greeting, I went into the room and kept all our luggage.

My father is a farmer, my mom is a housewife, and they live on the farm. That night my family were enjoying my mom's special recipe of fish and chips with vegetable soup and sharing old stories of our childhood memories. At that very moment we heard some strange noise of chickens clucking (咯咯叫) and Jamie's continuous barking. Feeling brave, the three of us—my father, Bisher and I—started to follow the barking.
