文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了两家美国公司Heirloom和Graphyte在直接空气捕获(DAC)技术上尝试通过不同方法移除大气中的二氧化碳以应对气候变化的挑战。

2 . The heavy use of fossil fuels over the last 150 years has released massive amounts of greenhouse gases, which have caused Earth to warm up. Just planting trees and protecting forests won’t solve the problem. When the plants and trees die, the carbon they’ve stored gets released again. That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture (捕获) (DAC).

A company called Heirloom has just opened the first DAC plant in the United States. Heirloom’s process uses limestones, a kind of common rocks, to capture carbon dioxide (CO₂). The company heats up the limestones to separate out the CO₂, which are then locked away in concrete. Heirloom uses renewable electricity to produce the heat, so the process doesn’t produce more CO₂.

The process is extremely expensive, but many large polluting companies are paying Heirloom to share the credit for removing CO₂. The new plant can remove 1,000 tons of CO₂ a year. That’s a tiny amount compared to how much carbon needs to be removed from the atmosphere. But the company says it hopes to remove a billion tons per year by 2035.

Graphyte is another US company working on DAC. The company claims its carbon capture method is very cheap, mainly because Graphyte lets plants do the work of capturing CO₂. The company collects unwanted plants and wood products and dries them completely so they can’t break down. Graphyte says its process doesn’t use much energy and can work anywhere. The plant and tree material the process uses would release carbon if it weren't treated.

Not everyone is excited about carbon removal. Some people worry that focusing on removing carbon could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say even if people stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow, the climate crisis wouldn't go away. There are still many greenhouse gases, like CO₂, in our atmosphere. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air.

1. What can be learned from paragraph 2?
A.How CO₂ is captured.B.What Heirloom's history is.
C.Where CO₂ should be released.D.Why Heirloom is established.
2. What is the large polluting companies’ attitude to Heirloom?
A.Doubtful.B.Unclear.C.Unconcerned.D.Supportive.
3. What advantage does Graphyte have over Heirloom in terms of capturing CO₂?
A.It uses fewer limestones.B.It is less expensive.
C.It mainly depends on green energy.D.It builds the DAC plant earlier.
4. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.It is enough to plant more trees and plants in forests.
B.It is essential to capture carbon dioxide from the air.
C.People should focus their attention on climate adaption.
D.It is impractical to pull carbon out of the air at present.

4 . A broken heart and a sad ending to a long friendship. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will. After all, it’s part of human life. But the experience can be hard to get over.

But research shows there are pathways through the heartache. Listening to sad music is a major one. It can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. It can arouse (激起) the desire to connect with others.

Sad music can help heal (治愈) and uplift you from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found the emotional influence of listening to sad music is an arousal of feelings of empathy (同情), and a desire for positive connection with others. That, itself, is psychologically healing. It draws you away from concentration on yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.

Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” improved their mood. In fact, it did so when the person first consciously accept the situation causing their sadness, and then began listening to the sad music. That is, when they intended that the sad music might help, they found that it did.

These findings link with other studies that show accepting your sad situation emotionally leads to healing and growth beyond it. It seems unbelievable but it does make sense. For example, research from Cornell University found that accepting discomfort about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, encourages people to find a pathway through it, beyond it. As Churchill famously said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” That discomfort points you towards creating a plan, a new action. It brings hope.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 3&4?
A.Sad music can make people help others.
B.Sad music can make sad people feel better.
C.Sad music can make people believe in themselves.
D.Sad music can make people concentrate on themselves.
2. What does the phrase underlined in the last paragraph mean?
A.Hearing a swear word used by enemies.B.Avoiding a place to go after death.
C.Getting an extremely pleasant time.D.Having an unbearable experience.
3. How does the author develop this article?
A.By listing figures.B.By giving directions.
C.By presenting research findings.D.By comparing examples.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the article?
A.How to Find Pathways through Heartaches
B.How We React to a Broken Heart Matters a Lot
C.What We Can Do to Overcome Discomfort in Life
D.Why Listening to Sad Music Heals Your Broken Heart

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了嫉妒的普遍性和类型,并给出了处理这种情绪的建议。

6 . The feeling of envy (嫉妒) strikes at many moments these days: When a friend buys a house, or when a neighbor shares good news about their successful side project while you’re caught by sky-high debts, when a co-worker gets a new job while your career has no progress.

It’s normal to feel envious. After all, envy is a universal emotion, and we don’t have to feel ashamed by it, psychologists say. In fact, psychologists suggest trying a powerful method and analyzing our envy to get clues about what we really want out of life. Doing so can help us figure out next steps in our careers and personal lives.

Two distinct flavors of envy exist. Malicious (恶意的) envy arrives with anger, annoyance and a sense of wanting to take an advantage away from another person, says Jan Crusius, psychologist and professor of motivation and emotion at University of Greifswald in Germany. Benign (良性的) envy, on the other hand, is when you wish you were in someone else’s position but don’t feel like tearing them down. That envy can inspire self-reflection and the motivation to set new goals. Research from Crusius has shown that marathon runners who were to experience benign envy also set higher goals for themselves, and tended to run faster in their races.

Rather than bottle up envy when it occurs, start by asking who inspires a mix of admiration and envy in your life. If they’ve accomplished a particular milestone, investigate why you’re drawn to that achievement. The answer may point you on a more fulfilling path. Changing your thoughts helps you view someone as a model to catch up rather than an opponent to defeat, and helps you focus on what you can control.

1. How did the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By telling a story.B.By giving examples.
C.By showing a definition.D.By listing a series of findings.
2. What can benign envy bring us finally?
A.Anger.B.Happiness.
C.Improvement.D.Self-reflection.
3. What should we do to deal with envy according to paragraph 4?
A.Set a goal for yourself.B.Just let it be.
C.Defeat your opponent.D.Bottle up your envy.
4. Where can this text be read?
A.In a novel.B.In a news report.
C.In a book review.D.In a research report.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了如何克服恐惧。

7 . How to Overcome Your Fears

Here are five practical strategies that will help you overcome your fears and face a brighter future.

Identify your fears

Take a moment to explore inward and identify the specific sources of your fears. Recognize what it is that is holding you back. Ask yourself, “What are you genuinely afraid of?” Spend a few quiet moments observing your thoughts and emotions.     1    .

Understand the root cause

Spend some time exploring the nature of your fears. Begin reflective thinking by asking yourself, “Why am I experiencing fear?” and “What is causing me to feel anxious?”     2    , you will gain an understanding of the factors behind your fears. When you deeply understand the sources of your fears, you are in a better position to overcome them.

Practice acceptance

The journey of overcoming fear requires acceptance.     3    . Instead, it is a catalyst(催化剂) that guides you on the path of personal development. By recognizing that fear is a universal human emotion that everyone faces at certain times, you can employ its energy for positive purposes.

    4

To overcome your fears effectively, you need to set clear and achievable goals. That’s because you can use a sense of purpose to drive you forward on your journey. In addition, breaking down your broader goals into smaller ones is important.

Take action

5    . Start small by dealing with the least frightening aspect of your fear and gradually work your way up to more challenging steps. As you go through this journey of action, unexpected opportunities for personal growth will arise. Ultimately, you’ll strengthen your self-confidence as you reconsider your beliefs about life and yourself.

A.Establish clear goals
B.Remember all your goals
C.If you take action at once
D.When you answer these questions
E.Then write down in detail what comes up for you
F.Accepting fear is not a barrier to self-improvement
G.At this point on your journey to overcome fear, it’s time to take action

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Ken Campbell如何在晚年成为一名超级长跑运动员的经历。

9 . The last attempt of Ken Campbell to run could date back to high school. When his wife, Susan, injured her foot, she needed support to rejoin her running group, so Campbell went along to keep her company in the recovery. “We were just walking at the beginning,” he says, “I was heavy, and weighed over 90kg.” But as the weeks and months passed, the weight fell away, Susan recovered and Campbell’s abilities grew. At the age of 63, he ran 50 km, and at 70, he completed a 100 km ultramarathon (超长距离马拉松赛跑).

So how does someone with no experience of running become an ultradistance runner in his 60s and 70s? Susan had run marathons (马拉松比赛) before her injury, but for Campbell, the turning point came when Susan’s Fleet Feet running group started training near their home.

Campbell went out to visit Susan’s group, and “the paths were a terrible mess. It had been raining, and I was slipping, sliding and falling. But I thought, well, I like this a lot.” What he liked above all was the feeling of “being wrapped by the path, being hugged by the closeness of the plants and the nearness of the river”.

Running the 100 km ultramarathon took Campbell 16 hours. When Campbell crossed the finish line, Susan handed him a 100 km sticker to display on the back of his truck. “It is a public statement that you are part of this community,” he says. “Wherever we park, I see a line of vehicles with their various stickers and I feel that we are a community.”

Campbell suffered from arthritis before he started running, and was “waiting for knee replacement”, but for now, he no longer needs an operation. It can put an end to the running—but the “sense of wellbeing and achievement will carry me on forever,” he says, “If I can’t run, I will walk.”

1. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.Why Campbell attempted to run marathon.
B.What led to Campbell’s weight loss.
C.What made Campbell start running.
D.What Campbell did for Susan’s recovery.
2. What was the turning point for Campbell?
A.His visit to Susan’s group.B.Feeling free in nature.
C.Falling down when training.D.Susan’s starting training.
3. What did the 100 km sticker mean to Campbell?
A.A sense of achievement.B.Encouragement from his wife.
C.A sense of belonging.D.Display of his happiness.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Well begun is half done.B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Failure is the mother of success.D.It is never too late to begin.
