3 . As we slide even closer to Father's Day during these pandemic (流行病)times, I can’ t help but feel super privileged to tell you about one extraordinary dad. He's a dad so good that after he was done raising his own kids, he took to YouTube to do some more dadding to millions of complete and total strangers in need.
Rob Kenney's childhood had a theme that, sadly, is not at all uncommon for American kids: fatherlessness. His father left his family when he was just twelve years old, and statistics say that lines up with the experience of about 25% of kids today. Many lessons a dad would teach a kid, he just had to learn on his own. However, Kenney swore that his own kids would not have that experience, and after successfully raising two kids into two adults, he's branching out to help fatherless kids just like him in the coolest way possible.
Kenney has started a YouTube channel called “Dad, How Do I?" to show fatherless kids a variety of “how to' s" over the everyday tasks of living. From “how to tie a tie" to "how to shave your face" to "how to check your car's oil" , Kenney’s videos are readily understood, though almost entirely unedited.
In the past week, thanks to some viral posts on Twitter and Facebook by influencers, Kenney's channel has gone from a handful of subscribers to 1.97 million! It just goes to show you how much his " Practical 'Dadvice' for everyday tasks" is needed and appreciated by fatherless kids everywhere --- not to mention adults who just simply don ' t know how to do stuff. The viewers ' comments on Kenney's YouTube channel can move even the hard-hearted to tears.

Winnie the Pooh
by A A Milne
My father used to read this to me when I was very young — he used different voices for all the animals. The characterization (角色设定) was so clever; we all know someone just like each inhabitant of the Hundred Acre Wood: gloomy Eeyore; thick but loyal Pooh; enthusiastic Tigger.
A A Milne was masterful in exploring the way they got along together, opening my eyes to how society really works.
Last Chance to See
by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine
This book tells of the authors, adventures as they set out to find the rarest of animals, those on the edge of extinction.
Their travels are rather exciting and they share a wonderful humour, which really appealed to me. Yet underpinning (支撑) everything is the realization that we can't just sit back and allow species to disappear.
Picture Palace
by Paul Theroux
I've always loved Theroux's travel writing, but this novel took my breath away. The words aren't long or complicated but, from that first paragraph, his writing grabs you by the nose hairs and drags you along. I had an art teacher who told me, “You're only an artist when you've found your own style, not when you're copying someone else, and Theroux represents this.”
1. Why did the author mention the characterization of Winnie the Pooh?A.To indicate the book has realistic values. |

8 . For several months, Cara has been working up the courage to approach her mom about what she saw on Instagram. Not long ago, the 11-year-old girl discovered that her mom had been posting her photos for much of her life. “I’ve wanted to bring it up. It’s strange to see myself up there, and sometimes there are pictures I don’t like of myself,” she said.
Like most other modern kids, Cara grew up under the influence of social media. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube were all founded before she was born. Instagram has been around since she was a toddler. While many kids may not yet have accounts themselves, their parents, schools, sports teams have been organizing an online presence for them since birth. It is a shock to know that details about their lives have been shared online without their permission or knowledge. And this has become a common experience for many teenagers.
Recently a parenting blogger said that despite her 14-year-old daughter’s horror at discovering that her mother had shared years of highly personal stories and information about her online, she simply could not stop doing it.
But it’s not just crazy mommy bloggers who share their children’s information on social media. Plenty of average parents do the same. There’s even a special word for it: sharenting (晒娃). Almost a quarter of children begin their digital lives when parents upload their prenatal sonogram scans (产前超声波扫描) to the Internet, according to a study conducted by the Internet-security firm AVG. The study also found that 92 percent of kids under the age of 2 already have their own unique digital identity.

9 . The world is a colorful landscape of different languages, skin colors, and different cultures. It's important to have a good understanding of different cultures in order to become a well-rounded person
One way is to read books written by authors from a particular culture. Reading works by authors who have a close relationship with a particular culture allows people to gain an authentic glimpse into the food, music, language, religion, and way of a life of a particular group of people.
Another way to learn about different cultures is to try to learn a foreign language.
Communicating with people from other countries through email or snail mail is another useful way to become familiar with different cultures.
A.Trying authentic food from a specific cultural group is also a great idea. |
B.The Internet has made it possible to communicate with others from different countries. |
C.Making contact with native speakers of the language allows one to gain firsthand knowledge. |
D.There are several ways to become knowledgeable about different cultures. |

10 . This year, German environmentalists collected 1.75 million signatures for a “save the bees” law requiring an immediate change toward organic farming. But to create healthy ecosystems worldwide, people in communities across the globe will need to take similar action based on sympathy for insects — and not only for bees and butterflies. The environmentalists presented immediate, science-based actions to slow down the insect decline.
“It takes specific law to preserve the amazing variety of insects in the world and we need to stop the destroying of natural habitats, limit road building in parks and reserves and produce food without the use of pesticides,” said Basset, an entomologist, “Conserving insects is not the same as conserving big animals or rare frogs. You can’t keep millions of insects in a zoo.”
A recent article in Entomology Today suggests that successful programs to save insects have a clear and simple objective and a strategically chosen audience. By focusing on bees and butterflies and other beautiful, familiar insects, it is possible to enact the law to protect the habitat of lesser known, less attractive, but equally important species.
But there are still huge gaps in information about how different species of insects are doing, especially in the tropics. “It is next to useless to weigh insects collected in an area and say that insect communities are increasing or declining.” Basset said. “We need much more specific information. That is expensive and difficult because of the effort that it takes just to identify the species, especially in the tropics. What we are doing now is to group insects by their main function, and then to determine how each group is doing in a specific area of the world.”
