文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了垃圾电话推销的危害以及如何远离电信诈骗。

2 . How to Stop Spam Calls for Good

If you made a list of the little things that bothered you the most, phone call scams would no doubt be at the top. Telemarketers, or more often, automated robot-callers, have tricks for interrupting you at the worst possible moment.     1

Fact is that robot-callers are never going to stop trying to reach you. Their schemes bring in hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of dollars annually. And unfortunately, older people are more likely to fall prey to these scams.     2

Sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry

Your first move: Join the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call Registry. You can get on the list by calling 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register.     3     To date, the agency has taken 51 legal actions against companies and telemarketers, recovering $112 million.

Use spam-filtering apps and tech

4     A spam-filtering app can give you a second layer of protection and is a good add-on to your overall smartphone security. The app’s makers maintain a large database of user-reported robocalls. When one of those numbers dials you, the app blocks the phone from ringing and informs you the call is spam. Genius!

    5

You probably know that a caller who insists you owe money to the IRS or says you’ll be arrested if you don’t settle a debt is a scammer. But your 10-year-old kid and your older parents and grandparents may be tricked. And remember: Knowing how to stop spam calls is just one step toward avoiding scams; don’t forget to explain how to stop spam texts to your loved ones, too.

A.Warn family members
B.Report to the police at once
C.Follow these steps to pull the plug on them once and for all.
D.If you have multiple numbers to input, register them at DoNotCall. gov.
E.Spam calls can reach you anytime and anywhere when you use your smartphone.
F.They’re annoying, but that’s not the only reason you should know how to stop spam calls.
G.The National Do Not Call Registry will prevent a lot of unwanted calls, but it won’t stop all of them.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了不同的国家以不同的方式庆祝圣诞节。

3 . Different countries celebrate Christmas in different ways. We asked some of our friends to explain what happens in their countries. This is what they told us:

France

In France, Christmas is always called Noël. Everyone has a Christmas tree, sometimes decorated in the old way with red ribbons and real white wax candles. Fir trees in the garden are often decorated too with lights on all night.

Father Christmas is called Père Noël. The Christmas meal is an important family gathering with good meat and the best wine. Few people send Christmas cards. More people send New Year cards to wish everyone good luck and joy for the New Year. These days Christmas lunch is a starter of foie gras (a strong tasting pate made from goose liver) followed by lunch of seafood — usually including lobsters and oysters.

New Zealand

Christmas starts for us with gifts under the tree, to be opened on Christmas morning. Then it’s onto a Christmas lunch either at home or at one’s parents place. Turkey or chicken with all the trimmings (佐料) is eaten. Then comes tea time. It is a BBQ for friends and family to get together, and have a few beers or wines with the meal!

Russia

In the days of the Soviet Union, Christmas was not celebrated very much. New Year was the important time — when “Father Frost” brought presents to children. With the fall of Communism, Christmas can be openly celebrated either on December 25th; or more often on January 7th. This unusual date is because the Russian Orthodox church uses the old “Julian” calendar for religious celebration days. Special Christmas food includes cakes, pies and “meat dumplings”.

Sweden

The most important day is Christmas Eve. A special Christmas meal is eaten on Christmas Eve — ham (pork), herring fish, and brown beans — and this is the time when families give presents to each other. Many people attend a church meeting early on Christmas Day.

1. Why do people in France send New Year cards?
A.To tell their friends the New Year is coming.
B.To ask for some special presents.
C.To invite their friends to family gathering.
D.To send their friends best wishes and happiness for the New Year.
2. What do they have in common when celebrating Christmas?
A.A special meal is prepared.
B.Everyone has a Christmas tree.
C.Parents give gifts to their children.
D.People attend a church gathering.
3. Which country celebrates Christmas “twice”?

A New Addition to the Family

For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.

However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.

Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.

Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

7 . Imagine that you are a detective at the scene of a crime. What you find is confusion. Evidence has been moved, stepped on, broken. You even suspect that someone took crucial items as souvenirs! This would make your job much more difficult, right?     1

Archaeologists are like detectives. We study clues left by people long ago and learn a lot about them: their culture, their environment, where they came from, and where they went. Anything made or modified by people is an artifact(文物).     2     These clues add to the great puzzle of history-- our history.

Archaeological sites are important to our cultural heritage. Laws protect them against damage by neglect, vandalism, or looters(掠夺者). Laws also help to preserve sites on public land.     3     This is true except in cases where human bones are found. Special laws regulate what can be done with human remains.

What if you find an artifact- -maybe an arrowhead, a piece of pottery, or an old cowboy spur --in your backyard?     4     Write down anything you notice. Is it on the surface, or was it buried? Are there other artifacts nearby? Take pictures. Every detail can help explain the artifact and maybe even reveal who left it behind.

5     What is the local Native American tribe? Was there an old colonial or western town nearby? Were battles fought in your area in the revolution or the Civil War?

Then contact your state’s historic preservation officer or an archaeologist at a nearby college or university. These experts can help explain what you found.

A.If possible, leave it in place.
B.Also investigate the history of where you live.
C.Is the ground disturbed by construction or digging?
D.As such, they are part of the archaeological record.
E.It might make it even impossible to solve the case.
F.It just might be a missing piece in history’s grand puzzle!
G.But private landowners have the rights to their own property.

8 . Science can help you improve your study methods. For more than 100 years, psychologists have done research on which study habits work best. Some tips help for almost every subject. For example, don’t just cram! And test yourself, instead of just rereading the material. Here are 4 tips to tweak your study habits.

1. Space out your studying

Nate Kornell, a psychologist at Williams College, thinks it’s a good idea to study the day before a big test.     1    . Instead, space out those study sessions. Kornell compares our memory to water in a bucket that has a small leak. Try to refill the bucket while it’s still full, and you can’t add much more water. Allow time between study sessions, and some of the material may drip out of your memory.     2    . And you’ll remember it better, next time, he notes.

2. Practice, practice, practice!

Musicians practice their instruments.     3    . The same should go for learning. “If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice,” says Katherine Rawson. She’s a psychologist at Kent State University in Ohio. In one 2013 study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored more than a full letter grade better, on average, than did students who studied the way they normally had.

3. Test yourself

That 2010 study backs up one of Nebel’s preferred study habits. Before big tests, her mom quizzed her on the material. “Now I know that was retrieval practice,” she says. “It’s one of the best ways you can study.” As Nebel got older, she quizzed herself. For example, she might cover up the definitions in her notebook. Then she tried to recall what each term meant. “    4    ,” Sana suggests. “Put questions on one side and the answers on the other side.” Friends can even quiz each other on the phone, she says. “Try to quiz yourself the way the teacher asks questions,” Nebel adds.

4. Dig deeper

It’s hard to remember a string of facts and figures if you don’t push further. Ask why things are a certain way. How did they come about? Why do they matter? Psychologists call this elaboration. It’s taking class material and “asking a lot of how and why questions about it,” Nebel says. In other words, don’t just accept facts at face value.     5    . And it creates a bigger network in your brain of things that relate to one another, she says. That larger network makes it easier to learn and remember things.

A.Some experts hold that studying late at night can be really useful
B.Of course, nothing can replace studying with your mother
C.This helps you combine new information with other things you know
D.But then you’ll be able to relearn it and learn more in your next study session
E.Create a deck of flash cards every time you learn new information
F.But research shows it’s a bad idea to squeeze all your studying into that day
G.Athletes practice sports skills

9 . Convincing someone to change their mind is really the process of convincing them to change their tribe (部落). If they abandon their beliefs, they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too.

The way to change people’s minds is to become friends with them, to combine them into your tribe, to bring them into your circle. Now, they can change their beliefs without the risk of being abandoned socially.

The British philosopher Alain de Botton suggests that we simply share meals with those who disagree with us: “Sitting down at a table with a group of strangers has the incomparable and odd benefit of making it a little more difficult to hate them without punishment. Prejudice and conflict between groups of people from different nations or races feed off abstraction. However, during a meal, something about handing dishes around, unfolding napkins (餐巾纸) at the same moment, even asking a stranger to pass the salt makes us less likely to hold the belief that the outsiders who wear unusual clothes and speak in distinctive accents deserve to be sent home or attacked. For all the large-scale political solutions which have been proposed to ease racial or cultural conflict, there are few more effective ways to promote tolerance between suspicious neighbours than to force them to eat supper together.”

Perhaps it is not difference, but distance that produces tribalism and unfriendliness. As proximity increases, so does understanding. I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” Facts don’t change our minds. Friendship does.

The Japanese writer Haruki Murakami once wrote, “Always remember that to argue, and win, is to break down the reality of the person you are arguing against. It is painful to lose your reality, so be kind, even if you are right.”

When we are in the moment, we can easily forget that the goal is to connect with the other side, cooperate with them, befriend them, and integrate them into our tribe. We are so caught up in winning that we forget about connecting. It’s easy to spend your energy labeling people rather than working with them.

The word “kind (family and relatives)” originated from the word “kin (old fashion of family and relatives).” When you are kind to someone, it means you are treating them like family. This, I think, is a good method for actually changing someone’s mind. Develop a friendship. Share a meal. Gift a book. Be kind first, be right later.

1. People are likely to change their mind when they ________.
A.change their beliefsB.are made friends with
C.move to a new communityD.are given somewhere to go
2. According to the passage, sharing meals is effective in building connections because it ________.
A.pleases people with different beliefs or accents
B.makes people focus on eating rather than conflicts
C.brings benefits to the people having dinner together
D.promotes understanding and tolerance among people
3. What does the underlined word “proximity” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Nearness.B.Action.C.Communication.D.Politeness.
4. The author quotes from Haruki Murakami to imply(暗示) that ________.
A.breaking down one’s reality is easy
B.kindness is more important than right
C.arguing and winning are not important
D.losing one’s identity is a painful process

10 . We know that China is the largest and fastest-growing consumer market in the world. What is less well understood are the forces that shape consumerism in the world’s most populous country. In my view, there are some social and cultural aspects at play that drive consumer spending.

Consumerism is related to freedom. To have a choice means to have consumer choice. You are what you consume. Consumption is an expression of self. It allows you to explore the world through its products, to experiment with lifestyle choices, and to do so safely and anonymously(匿名). You might never get to France, but you can try French wine. California might be far, but you can go to Shanghai Disneyland. Indeed, the enthusiasm for choice is reflected in the enthusiasm Chinese consumers have for online shopping.

Consumerism is a statement of success. American economist Thorstein Veblen popularized the concept of “conspicuous consumption”. When consumption is no longer driven only by need, it becomes a way of making a statement that you have disposable(可自由支配的)income and you can ---at least in certain respects---enjoy life on your terms. Simple pleasures---a pair of shoes, a smartphone, designer clothing --- become statements of personal identity.

The collective experience is focused. We like participating in group events. FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, goes beyond cultures. But I suspect this trend is stronger in China than in the West because Confucian culture does not celebrate outsiders as the West’s culture does. Social media reinforce(强化)this collective pattern so that shopping and dining are shared experiences. Opinions are crowd-sourced. And the merchants reinforce this pattern by supporting holiday sales, group buying, and other promotions.

Successful brands in China are able to handle most or all of the above considerations. The consumer must not only be delighted with your product. The journey of the consumer must also respect these socio-cultural aspects.

1. What’s mainly talked about in the passage?
A.Chinese are growing wealthier.
B.China’s fast-growing market economy.
C.Chinese socio-cultural influences on consumerism.
D.Chinese consumers’ preference for quality rather than quantity.
2. What does Paragraph 2 focus on ?
A.Shopping online is a new experience.
B.Consumption can be a reflection of freedom.
C.Foreign products can be purchased in China.
D.Shopping around the world is a favorable choice.
3. What do the underlined words “conspicuous consumption” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.The ability to cover one’s real need in daily life.
B.Spending money in order to keep up with others.
C.The purchase of expensive items to display status.
D.Buying plenty of goods and delivering them to others.
4. Why does the author suspect FOMO is stronger in China?
A.Social media play a bigger role in their lives.
B.Following the trend is what people like better.
C.Chinese people have less contact with the strangers.
D.Confucian culture is less likely to appreciate outsiders.
