1 . On the southern fringe of Beijing, a giant star-fish shaped building is transforming the city’s economy. The new Beijing Daxing International Airport, which cost 80 billion yuan, is one of the world’s largest when it opened in September, 2019. The Chinese government wants the airport to be magnet for businesses and an attraction for locals as well as travelers.
Daxing is one of many airport projects under way in Asia, collectively costing more than $100 billion, to stimulate the development in tourism by rising middle class. Daxing will increase Beijing’s capacity for travelers by more than 70% and reduce congestion at Beijing Capital International Airport, the world’s second-busiest last year with more than 100 million passengers.
Urban planners long have emphasized the roles airports can play in helping cities grow. Now they are focusing on turning the facilities on the suburbs of urban areas into economic centers themselves.
It is too soon to know whether the projections for increasing air travel are overly upbeat(乐观的). The U.S.-China trade war, slowing global economic growth could ground some potential flyers. At the same time, the impact of global climate change could slow the aviation industry’s growth. Many of Asia’s new airport cities are located in coastal areas, putting them at risk from rising sea level and rainstorm-related flooding. “Building bigger and bigger airports—creating more and more greenhouse gases will just heighten the problems we are facing,” Jim Martin says, who is an expert in this field. “We are on the path of no return, and we are not stopping. We are accelerating.”

2 . Brooke wanted a dollhouse and some sugar cookies. So the 6-year-old asked Alexa to get them. Alexa wasn’t her mom or babysitter. It was voice-activated home assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Alexa comes with the Amazon Echo device. And it made Brooke’s wishes come true. A few days later, much to her parents surprise, a $170 dollhouse and four pounds of cookies showed up.
Alexa is not the only AI willing to order up treats for you. Apple HomePod has Siri, Google Home has its Assistant, and the upcoming Galaxy Home device will have Bixby. People who own these devices use them mainly for listening to music, checking the weather, and setting timers. According to a report, voice shopping is rare. People who do it mainly order simple things like paper towels. But many experts predict a boom in voice shopping in the near future.
But voice shopping has its downsides. Unwanted dollhouses aren’t the biggest problem. It’s usually very easy to cancel an order or return items. The thing that creeps some people out is that these assistants are always listening. They have to be able to respond when you want them. So they listen to for “Alexa” or “OK Google” or another command. When they hear it, they start recording the conversation. Some have worried about what happens to these recordings. Should companies be allowed to use them to learn about people’s shopping habits? Should police access them to solve a crime? What if someone hacks the device?
What do you think? Are you ready to start voice shopping?

8 . Do you like to eat out? Do you like to eat quickly? Do you like inexpensive food?
Some people go to fast-food restaurants for these reasons. In the past, people usually went to diners(路边餐馆)for these reasons. In fact, many people in the States still go to diners today for the same reasons.
A man named Walter Scott had the first “diner” in 1872. It wasn’t a real diner. It was only a food cart. People on the street walked up to the cart to buy food. These carts served late-night workers who wanted a cup of coffee and a late-night meal. The meal was a sandwich or boiled eggs.
In 1887, Samuel Jones built the first diner big enough to allow the customers to come inside. However, they did not sit down. Later, people built diners with counters and stools(凳子), and people sat down while they ate.
Before long, many diners stayed open around the clock. In other words, people were able to eat in diner at any time. Diners changed in other ways, too. The original(最初的) menu of sandwiches and coffee became bigger. It included soup, favorite dishes, and a breakfast menu. In addition, diners soon became permanent buildings. They were no longer carts on wheels.
Diners today look similar to the diners of the early 1900s. They are usually buildings with large windows. Inside, the diners have shining counters with stools, booths, and tables and chairs. People can eat all three meals in a modern diner.
Today, many people eat in fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and Burger King. However, the diner remains an American tradition, and thousands of people still enjoy eating there. It was popular a century ago, and it is still popular today.

10 . Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice. It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or many friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?
Who choose your friends?
