4 . A girl is driving with her parents when they spot watercress growing by the side of the road. Her parents stop and take her out of the back seat. They ask her to take off her shoes and roll up her jeans to help them gather it.
It is the beginning of the story in Watercress, a picture book written by Andrea Wang. The story is based on her childhood. “My parents actually spotted watercress growing by the side of the road in Ohio where I grew up,” Wang says. “And I was horribly embarrassed to get out and gather the watercress from the dirty water. It really made me aware of how different I was from my friends. But for my parents, it brought back memories of their home country and it was a connection to their homeland that they had left behind.”
The feeling of being ashamed of our parents is universal. We’ve probably all experienced that at some point. “I remember walking 20 feet behind my parents when we were walking down the street, pretending that I didn’t belong to them,” Wang laughs.
The pictures in Watercress have drawn inspiration from Chinese landscape paintings, which often have mountains covered in clouds. “It always has felt dreamlike to me when I look at those paintings. And I thought it would be nice to bring it into my book because of its theme of memory,” Wang explains.
Unlike the little girl in the story, Andrea Wang didn’t hear any story about her parents’ childhoods until she was an adult. “My parents were trying to protect me, by not telling me the hardships they went through,” Wang says.
But as a kid, Wang remembers feeling disconnected from her history. “I think it’s really important for families to share what they can,” Wang says. “So that kids know that history and can feel a sense of pride in their culture.”

8 . France is famous the world over for its wonderful food. If you were lucky enough to enjoy a French meal, you would most likely be offered some bread to eat with it. The most popular bread they bake is called a baguette. Ten million baguettes are sold every year in France. Because the French expect their bread to be super fresh, most of France’s 30, 000 bakers have to end their day by throwing into the waste bin any remaining baguettes.
Frenchman Franck Wallet has thought about this food waste issue for many years. He originally trained to be an urban (城市的) planner and worked in that area for many years. But his mind would regularly turn to the problems of what to do with wasted food — especially baguettes. He began to talk with some engineers to see if they could come up with a solution. In 2016, a solution was found. They called the machine the “Crumbier”.
When a good baguette is just made, it is crispy on the outside and as soft as a cloud on the inside. Once it has cooled down the bread soon becomes hard. Before the Crumbier, this old bread would be thrown away. Today, if that bread is placed into the Crumbier, it is very quickly turned into very fine breadcrumbs (面包屑). These can be mixed with fresh flour (面粉), salt and water and baked again like normal bread.
Bread made with Crumbier breadcrumbs has a darker colour, but just a little bit. The taste is also a little different and has been described as having the flavour of toast. Once the breadcrumbs have been produced, they can last up to six months if they have been packed properly. Because less water is used in Crumbier bread, it will last a little longer. The Crumbier is now on sale and bakers throughout France are making sure they have one. No one wants to waste food.

10 . Fat Bear Week has been an annual event for the past five years in Katmai National Park in Alaska. Here is the shortened list of this year’s possible champion.
Chunk
Chunk was first identified in 2007 as an independent 2.5-year-old bear. He has been the fattest bear for several years. Due to his size and strength, Chunk had gained the confidence and ability to drive away most other bears to get some of the best feeding spots.
Yet, in the past few years his behavior changed. He would sometimes play with other bears or wait patiently for their leftovers. He was also unwilling to challenge the other big males at Brooks River. In summer 2023, however, he got one of the best fishing spots and became the largest adult male again.
Grazer
Grazer was introduced to Brooks River in 2005. She is one of the best fishers and a protective mother bear at the river. She often attacks much larger bears — even large adult males — in order to protect her children.
Instead of making frequent trips to Brooks Falls, she often uses the river mouth area where fewer bears are present most likely to provide her family with more safety.
Walker
Walker, a large adult male, was first identified as an independent 2.5-year-old in 2009. He often had easy access to some of the best fishing spots due to his size and good nature.
Walker remained a cooperative and playful bear until his young adult years. Having been frequently challenged by other bears such as Grazer and another male bear Otis, he shows much less tolerance (宽容) for other bears compared to his younger self.
