There are many places to see lovely giant pandas in China. But the four panda bases around Chengdu are the best places to see giant pandas. Which one is best for you depends on how much time you have and what kind of experience you want to have.

If you just want to see giant pandas, we recommend you go to Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Base. You can see pandas at all different ages from the oldest to the newborns. This base is huge but usually crowded. You can finish your trip in one day.

If you want a deeper panda experience, there are three recommended activities.

Join in a Panda Volunteer Program

Giant panda volunteer programs are available in three panda bases. Dujiangyan is the best place for a one-day program. If you want a less crowded environment, consider Wolong and Bifengxia, though they require 2 and 3 days respectively. Your work would include weighing and cleaning bamboo, making cakes for pandas, watching pandas being fed, and cleaning pandas’ enclosures (围栏).

Join in a Red Panda Volunteer Program

Unlike with giant pandas, you can have a zero-distance encounter with red pandas—you can feed a group of them without a fence in between. If you are interested in red pandas, you can join in our red panda volunteer program.

Hike Into the Habitat of Wild Pandas

If you are a lover of pandas and outdoor activity as well, consider having a hike in wild panda habitat in Wolong. Go panda tracking, and see if you will be lucky enough to see a wild panda.

3 . America’s youth is turning its back on tobacco. According to a study recently published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking among US high school students is at an all-time low. One in 5 US high school students in 2016 reported using a tobacco product within the past 30 days, an improvement from 1 in 4 students just one year before.

“These findings show the importance of continuing to implement the evidence-based strategies that we now work to reduce all forms of tobacco product use, including e-cigarettes, among our nation’s youth,” says Brian King, of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health and senior author of the study.

And it’s not just tobacco: Drug use among US teens is down across the board. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has published annual reports on US teens’ drug use since 1996, and the 2016 survey shows the lowest rates of illegal drug and alcohol use. Marijuana (大麻) use remained “mostly steady”. “It is encouraging to see more young people making healthy choices not to use illegal substances,” says former National Drug Control Policy Director Michael Botticelli.

All individual forms of tobacco such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and smoke-less tobacco saw declines in usage in 2016. Experts are especially encouraged by the decline in cigarettes, the most popular tobacco product among teens. In 2016, 11.3 percent of high school students reported using e-cigarettes, down from 16 percent in 2015.

Dr. King says adaptation is key to the decline of e-cigarettes. “We have over a half-century of science telling students about the harmful effects of tobacco use and what works best to prevent it,” says King. “E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among our nation’s youth, and it’s critical that our proven strategies are modernized to keep pace with the changing tobacco product landscape.”

7 . Volunteer Wildlife Transporters Needed!

What is a wildlife transporter?
● Wildlife transporters help get rescued sick, injured and orphaned wildlife from a rescuer, carer or vet clinic to a wildlife hospital or a wildlife carer.
● All wildlife will be securely contained for safe transport, so no handling experience is required.
What equipment do I need?
● A reliable vehicle with air-conditioning and sufficient room to place transport carriers. A standard SUV is sufficient.
● Basic rescue supplies
—Cardboard boxes of various sizes
—Plastic rescue baskets
—Pet carriers
● Other supplies
—Second-hand towels, pillowcases or other soft cloth for lining and covering transport carriers
—Notebook and pen/pencil for marking boxes and completing paperwork

Some wildlife (such as koalas, snakes) will already be contained in a more specialised transport carrier by the rescuer and the animal will remain in that carrier for transport. You do NOT need to have these specialised carriers.

Habitat for Humanity (HFH)

This nonprofit organization offers full-year service positions at local habitat organizations across the US. In this program, participants can learn and develop new skills while serving a critical role in helping HFH build, create or improve homes for those in need. There is a small living allowance for those who qualify.

Where There Be Dragons (WTBD)

WTBD has some of the most in-depth foreign travel programs available. It offers political science, history, sustainability, economics and language immersion in remote locals as well as those closer to home. WTBD offers college credits as part of their programs. This program is one of the most expensive options, but financial aid is available.
