1 . In September, when UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay visited Zhoukoudian in suburban Beijing, which is famous for the discovery of Peking Man living between 700,000 to 200,000 years ago, she was full of praise for the structure that successfully protected Yuanrendong Cave from an unusual rainstorm in July.
The cave in the central area of the site has so far revealed the remains of 40 individuals. The structure protects the site from the weather, including heavy wind, snow and hail, and its design fits in with the surrounding environment, Qin Changwei, secretary-general of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, said at the 2nd World Cultural and Natural Heritage Forum in Beijing on Nov. 17 and 18. “It provides a reference for the protection of precious cultural relics, and suggests measures for helping heritage sites respond to the influence of climate change.”
Organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the Auspices of UNESCO(Beijing), and the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation among others, the forum brought together some 50 professionals to discuss the protection and sustainable (可持续发展的) development of heritage sites. Scholars stressed the influence of climate change on heritage sites, and offered suggestions for how to solve the problem.
“Entering the 21st century, climate change has been the subject of in-depth discussion by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Questions like how to balance between humans and nature, how to respond to natural disasters caused by climate change, and what new challenges this brings to World Heritage Sites, are worth consideration,” says Qin. “Solving the problem requires us to unify, making full use of advanced technology, such as space and digital technologies, and jointly developing risk prevention and response plans,” he adds.

4 . Who first proposed the holiday for workers? It’s not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labor Day title.
Some records show that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a “general holiday for the laboring classes”. But many believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades (游行), picnics and parties — festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit “the strength and spirits of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.
Speeches by important official men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909,the Sunday before Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to (致力于) the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.

7 . “Although I’m surrounded by nature, I am not far away from city,” Nathan said, a foreign reporter of China Daily.
With a planned area of 11. 5 square kilometers, Xixi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province is China’s first national Wetland Park. Xixi is regarded as the “green lung of the city” for its rich ecological resources and wonderful natural scenery.
Hangzhou launched the Xixi wetland water environment management project in April. The waste water systems and sluice-pumping stations in the wetland will be more automatically (自动地) controlled as the project progresses and the overall water quality will also be improved, said Liu Xiang, deputy director of the ecological culture research center at the wetland park.
In addition to water quality improvement, Xixi has introduced more than 200 species of native and endangered plants to increase biodiversity.
The latest data shows that Xixi is home to four kinds of national first-class protected animals, including oriental stocks, which are known as “national treasure bird”. 8 . An 84-year-old man from Sichuan has become an online sensation after his granddaughter, 25-year-old Wan Minghui, quit her job and set out to help him realize some of his wishes. Their short videos have attracted millions of views online.
Visiting Beijing is a long-cherished wish of the old man and his wife before she passed away. Clutching a photo of his wife, Wan’s grandfather sang the national anthem and wiped away tears when he attended the national flag-raising ceremony in Beijing at 2 am in the video.
At some destinations in Beijing, he was photographed with his wife’s picture, which he brought along to make it feel as though she were traveling with him. The videos has received more than five million likes and a long list of comments, including praise for Little Wan, best wishes for her grandfather and discussions about the meaning of life.
Wan quitted her job in May to accompany her grandfather after she noticed his loneliness during an unannounced visit to him one day . “My grandpa was lonely, which made me sad, and the idea of quitting my job to accompany him came to mind. He accompanied me as I grew up and I will accompany him as he grows old” she said.
Neither her parents nor her grandfather agreed with her decision to quit her job. Her grandfather finally agreed after Wan told him that she could work from home, and she began to record his life in videos.

9 . Emotions are inherent (固有的) in the human experience and play a significant role in children's lives. Emotional resilience is a critical component of success, helping children navigate life's inevitable ups and downs.
Step 1: Build an emotional toolkit
Children aren't born knowing how to manage and express difficult feelings, such as anger or hurt. They need to learn about various emotions and what behaviors are acceptable.
Step 2:
Helping children connect with their emotional lives includes all emotions, not just pleasant ones. For instance, well-intentioned adults may say, “Don't be angry” or“There is nothing to be sad about”, but this may shut down the exploration of those feelings rather than addressing them. When this avoidance is repeated, it interferes with the understanding and mastery of difficult emotions.
Step 3: Help children regulate and co-regulate
Children often need parents to help them navigate intense emotions.
Co-regulation does not mean parents should always rush in to“fix” children's discomfort, particularly if they don't want help. Children also need space to work through struggles on their own to build emotional competence.
A.It is a potential superpower |
B.Accept and validate all emotions |
C.Children learn by observing adults |
D.Be a good parent by always being there |
E.Building an emotional toolkit is no easy task |
F.Finding preferred coping skills is a personal process |
