文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。研究表明,除了睡眠时间和睡眠质量外,规律的就寝时间对于睡眠质量起着很重要的作用。

1 . The measure of a good night’s sleep is usually based on two things—the amount of time spent sleeping and the quality of that sleep. But now researchers say there is a third thing that matters even more than the other two when it comes to keeping good sleep habits, and that is having a regular bedtime.

A study has found that going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day have an important effect on one’s health. Adults who stick to a regular bedtime tend to weigh less, have lower blood sugar and reduced risk of heart disease.

The researchers studied the sleeping habits of 2,000 adults with an average age of 69. They found that people with greater irregularity (无规律) in their sleep patterns tended to go to sleep later at night, feel sleepy and sleep more during the day, and experienced reduced light exposure. These people were also more likely to be stressed. Among the three kinds of sleep problems, sleep regularity was the most strongly associated with health.

Of course, there are many people for whom this may be impossible, such as night-shift workers or those with late-night duty. But for those who don’t have mandatory (强制的) reasons to stay up late, they should make an effort to go to bed at the same time every night. Skip the late afternoon coffee. Get off the phone. Try this calculator to figure out the best bedtime.

As Matthew Walker, a scientist, wrote, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.” Surely that’s reasonable enough to go to bed on time.

1. What can we infer from the research?
A.People feel more stressed when they grow older.B.The old often have less sleep.
C.Adults enjoy sleeping late.D.Regular bedtime does good to our health.
2. Which of the following influences health most?
A.Reduced light exposure.B.Sleep regularity.
C.Sleeping during the day.D.Sleeping later at night.
3. According to the author, those who don’t have to stay up late should ______.
A.Avoid the late-night duty.B.Skip the late-night coffee.
C.Get off the phone while working.D.Try to sleep at the same time each night.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.The Importance of SleepB.Ways to Have a Good Sleep

3 . Michael Jordan is a former professional American basketball player, Olympic athlete, businessperson, and actor. Considered one of the best basketball players ever, he dominated (主宰) the sport from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s.

Michael began his professional basketball career when he was chosen by the Chicago Bulls in 1984. Then, there was a time when the Bulls kept adding new players and changing coaches, but they didn’t win. Seeing that, Michael felt like he needed to do all the scoring as he couldn’t trust the other players’ skills. Many people thought that Michael Jordan might never win a championship (冠军) if he kept trying to do it all by himself.

To improve their performance on the court, Coach Tex Winter taught the Bulls his triangle offense. It included sharing the ball and moving around the court in a specific way. Michael was unsure. He thought he was the only one that could make the big shots. Tex Winter told him he should learn to trust his teammates to make the triangle offense work best. But that was difficult for Michael.

The Bulls faced the Utah Jazz in the 1997 National Basketball Association Finals. After four games, the series was tied 2-2. Finally, Michael scored thirty-eight points and the Bulls won. Then, they had a chance to win the series in Game Six. Michael had the ball near the end of the game with Jazz players swarming (拥上) around him. Instead of trying a difficult shot, he passed the ball to a teammate, Steve Kerr, who made the winning basket. Michael finally trusted his teammates and he didn’t always have to take the big shot.

From then on, Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships and earned the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award five times. With five regular-season MVPs and three All-Star MVPs, Michael Jordan became the greatest basketball player of all time.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一款人工智能软件,该软件能够预测地震造成的损失,实时改变预测,它将成为救援人员的好帮手。

6 . One Concern is an AI company (人工智能公司) in California. It is using machine learning and AI to help firefighters. The company hopes its software (软件) can make exact predictions about earthquake damage. It can tell firefighters how to plan for an earthquake and how to do their jobs better when it happens.

Nicole Hu, a technology officer from One Concern, says the key is to feed the computers a lot of data (数据) about an area. The data may include information about homes and other buildings, the natural environment, and the size of an earthquake. The computers then use the information to make predictions about what would happen if there were an earthquake in the area. It then uses data from past earthquakes to see whether its predictions are any good, and changes its predictive models accordingly.

Gregory Deierlein, earthquake engineer at the Stanford University, says one of the most surprising things about the company’s software is its ability to make use of data from an earthquake as it’s happening, and to change its predictions in real time.

In the past, researchers would collect data after an event and a few years later they’d produce new models, says Deierlein. Now the new models appear in a matter of minutes.

Dan Ghiorso leads the Woodside Fire Protection District (区) near San Francisco, which covers about 32 square miles. He says in the past, when an earthquake hit, he’d have to make educated guesses (based on experience and training) about what parts of this district might be badly damaged and then drive to each place to have a look around. He hopes One Concerns’ software will change that.   “Instead of driving thirty-two square miles, in fifteen minutes on a computer I can get a good idea of the damage,” he says. ‘‘Instead of me taking my educated guess, they’re putting science behind the predictive models.”

1. What do we know about the software’s predictions?
A.They can tell people the size of an earthquake.
B.They are about when an earthquake may happen.
C.They are based on data from many different areas.
D.They can be made before and during an earthquake.
2. What is an advantage of the software according to Deierlein?
A.It can make predictions very fast.B.It is sold at very low prices.
C.It has many different uses.D.It can be used by common people.
3. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.How to save people during earthquakes.
B.How Ghiorso gets to know earthquake damage.
C.How to train firefighters to make guesses.
D.How Ghiorso looks at new predictive models.
4. How does Ghiorso feel about the new technology?
A.Worried.B.Uncaring.C.Hopeful.D.Doubtful.
