2 . A man recently helped a woman, who had been knocked down by a car in Taizhou, Jiangu province, reach a hospital. But before doing so, he took a photograph of the scene with the woman to avoid being charged with knocking her down. Several similar cases were reported across the country during the Spring Festival, leaving people with mixed feelings, says Cao Pengcheng in an article in People's Daily.
Altruism(利他主义) is part of Chinese culture, and there is no lack of good Samaritans(乐善好施者) in the country. But recently, says Cao, some good Samaritans were blackmailed by the people who they helped. It made altruism a tough issue.
Cao says that it is a good thing for people to become more business-minded.but it is one thing to do as cost-benefit analysis (分析) in business, and quite another to measure whether a person in need is worth helping. I people always make such materialistic calculation(物质计算),they will further lower social and moral (道德) standards.
Fortunately, says Cao,there are still people like the man in Taizhou who deepen our belief in altruism and kindheartedness by continuing to help others, despite knowing that the existing system and rules in the county do not offer enough protection for good Samaritans.

4 . Su Shan is a delicacy made with milk and cream that looks like shaved ice (刨冰). Poet Wang Lingran from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) described how people made and enjoyed Su Shan in his poem Ode to Su He Shan. According to the text, sugar was added to Su Shan that was shaped into many forms. Sometimes, Su Shan was decorated with flowers and leaves to make it more beautiful.
“It is neither solid (固态的), nor watery and disappears once it touches teeth,” the poet wrote. The Su Shan in his poem was thought by many experts to be an early form of ice cream. However, only the nobles (贵族) were lucky enough to have large iceboxes to create it in summer.
Although there were no fridges in ancient times, iceboxes to store ice cubes in summer had become very common in rich families by the Tang Dynasty. At that time, people either had ice water or small pieces of shaved ice.
People could easily buy iced drinks on the street during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).As a community service, some rich people even provided free ice water and medicine on the street for free. Ice water sold during the Song Dynasty was often added to mung beans (绿豆) to help prevent heat stroke (中暑).

5 . It happens every spring. Flowers suddenly come out everywhere on the same day, as if they made an appointment with one another. But how exactly do plants “know” when to flower?
It is a question that has puzzled biologists for years. But according to Science Daily, a US research group may have finally answered it —the secret lies in a protein (蛋白质) called FKF1. This allows plants to sense the differences in day lengths so that they can tell the seasons are changing.
Researchers discovered the FKFI protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis. They found that the FKFI protein is a photoreceptor (感光器). This means it is sensitive to, and can be activated by sunlight.
“Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon throughout the year. If there is no light at this time, for example, in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein won’t be activated,” explained Takato Imaizumi, the leader of the study. “But when spring comes and the days get longer, the FKF1 protein can be activated by daylight and the plants ‘know’ it is time to flower.”
Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that the process is similar in other plants, including crops like rice and wheat. This could be useful to the agricultural industry in the world.

It won respect and interest in the United States after New York Times reporter James Reston visited China with President Nixon and needed an operation. Chinese doctors used acupuncture on James after surgery (外科手术) to reduce his pain, and his recovery was quick. Curious about this, James was allowed to watch surgery on patients who received acupuncture for anesthesia (麻醉). Patients talked with their doctors during the operation and then walked back to their rooms on their own.
The effectiveness of acupuncture left James such a deep impression that he wrote a front- page article in New York Times about his operation upon returning to the United States. “A leading medical expert sent by Premier Chou En-lai removed my appendix (阑尾). I was awake in the whole process. ”

9 . Losing weight is tough. For most people, it requires a change in diet, a change in exercise habits, and a change in attitude.
Set healthy goals.
If you're overweight and want to change that, the first step is deciding what your target weight is.
Start small.
Making major behavior changes isn't something that happens overnight.
Now it's time to start working towards that goal. The best way to stick with your diet and exercise rules is to track it. There are plenty of apps that allow you to do this. Or you can do it in an old way and keep a written food and exercise journal. Find what works for you and write down what you've achieved every day.
Evaluate (评估) and adjust.
Every month you should take a look at your goal and see what type of progress you've made towards achieving it. If you're not where you want to be, make small adjustments. Try doing different exercises or cutting back on certain types of foods that you may be eating too much of.

10 . The Internet is an amazing tool, especially for children who want to learn. But it also has dark side. Parents have to ask themselves, “When is the right time to let my child go online?”
This is a much bigger problem than it used to be. Now we live in a time when a family could have more than one computer. It is common for children to have their own computers or laptops. Some also have phones and tablets (平板电脑).
Parents do have difficulty in acting correctly. On the one hand, it would be foolish to keep children from the Internet as they can learn a lot from it. But on the other hand, parents shouldn’t let children do whatever they like on the Internet. The problem is that everybody is busy nowadays, and this is certainly true for parents. How many parents have the time to sit don with their kids when they do their homework online? Some do, but more are just not able to.
So at what age should children be allowed to use the Internet? According to a survey, the average age when parents allow their children to go online independently is about eight years old.
As a nonparent (无子女者),I do find it hard to agree. I always believe that education is the key to success. However, I think children as young as eight may face a lot of dangers when they use the Internet without parents being around. So I think schools and parents have the responsibility to teach children not only how to use the Internet, but also how to do it safely.
