1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Brad Howard, a Texas father, had enough of his son’s disruptive (扰乱性的) behavior in physics class. Despite multiple warnings and complaints from the teacher about his son’s excessive (过多的) talking, the situation didn’t improve.

So, Brad decided to take matters into his own hands and gave his son, Bradley, a final warning. Brad made a bold promise to his son, saying, “Hey, if we get another call, I’m going to show up in school and sit beside you in class. ”

The 17-year-old Bradley probably thought his dad was just bluffing (唬人) and continued his chatty (爱闲聊的) ways. But when Brad received another email from the teacher, he knew he had to follow through with his threat.

On the morning of the important day, Brad’s wife woke him up and said, “Brad, it’s time for you to go to school. ” It struck him what he had said. He just couldn’t but a bit regret, “Oh, no, what have I done? ”

Despite his unwillingness, Brad was determined to keep his word and headed to his son’s high school.

The sight of Brad sitting next to Bradley in class was a source of amusement for Bradley’s friends, who found the situation ridiculous. Bradley, on the other hand, was less than thrilled.

He couldn’t believe that his dad had actually gone through with his threat, The embarrassment of having his own father sitting beside him in class was enough to make him regret his behavior. As the class started, Bradley could feel all eyes on him and his dad. He could sense the judgment and the whispers from his classmates.

“Hey, Bradley, it looks like your dad is really serious about this, ” one of his friends whispered across the hallway, trying to hold back a laugh.

“Yeah, this is so embarrassing, ” Bradley whispered, his cheeks turning a deep shade of red.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ever since I came to work in my present company five years ago, I have heard about a small restaurant nearby called Love Dad. Everybody believes that it is owned by somebody’s loving dad. The restaurant does give the diners a sense of home. The furnishings are homely, with dining areas looking like family dining rooms. Best of all, they have hand-drawn cards, which diners can take away with them when checking out. The restaurant doesn’t have a menu. You never know what will be served until you come to its door with a “served today” notice hanging to it.

Whenever I pass by, I just can’t help entering to enjoy the homely atmosphere. It’s a reminder of my own home and my dad, who will prepare a great dinner for the family every day. Dad is a manager in a construction company and a great cook at home and not only a great cook. He is the kind of hero-like father at home, who can fix everything in the home and deal with all problems. As my parents live in another city, this small homely restaurant is where I choose to go to comfort my homesickness.

Curiosity about whose dad the owner of the restaurant is has always been there among my workmates who are its regular customers but it seems that nobody has a clue. It doesn’t matter much as all of them can get a taste of home there.

Last month, when I was home for the Christmas break, my parents talked to me about their plan for retirement and I mentioned the restaurant Love Dad to them. We all thought it would be great if Mom and Dad could join the restaurant in some way. They asked me about the exact location of it and decided to deal with the matter themselves.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My family always had the basics, but there was little money for much else beyond food and shelter. Everyone in our small town lived the same way. That is why I was pleasantly surprised when my mother came up with the money to ask someone to take a picture for my fourth-grade class. Twenty-two students lined up in three rows and faced the camera with smiles. My teacher Mrs. Cornell stood to the side.

Schoolwork was never a burden for me. Even when I was sick, I still wanted to go to school. As the years passed, I would see that fourth-grade picture from time to time. It always reminded me that I had wanted to become a teacher. Later, I got married and my focus was on building a family. Every so often I would feel that longing for the teaching career I never got to have.

Once my children were in school, I had some time to myself. The thirst to teach was still there. It would mean going back to college. But I was now forty-two years old. I had not been a student for over twenty years. Were there any brain cells left after raising three children? Having only my husband’s income made money a problem as well.

After much mental struggle I managed to come up with enough money for my first semester, a total of nine hours, but I had no idea how I would pay for anything beyond that. With a step of faith, I moved forward. Standing in line with baby-faced teenagers to register for classes, I questioned my ability to do it all. But here I was, deciding on British Literature as my major.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。

Niesha could not forget the way she froze in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today was Niesha’s turn. However, her hands shook so violently that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she did clearly not finish. He also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.

“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.

When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”

Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.”

Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.

“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-- I was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried.

Arthur stopped and said, “It looks like you’ve got a problem.”

“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry but I can’t start my car.”

“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”

“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”

The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.

It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!

Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.

Arthur still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into a young woman in front of him.

She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”

Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

Thomas and John have a lot in common. They are both talented high school seniors. They both love basketball. They are both captains of their respective high school basketball teams. But on one Saturday night in February, they were forever linked in the minds of all who were present for a mutual act of courage, sportsmanship(体育精神)and respect.

The remarkable moment came during a game between Thomas's small town Illinois team and John's big city team in Wisconsin—a game that almost wasn't played. Just days before the game, John's mother lost her five-year battle with cancer. Her death was sudden and painful for all who knew her.

John's coach wanted to cancel the game, but John insisted that the game should be played. So with heavy hearts, his teammates prepared to honor their captain's wishes and play without him.

What they weren't prepared for was John's appearance in the gym mid-way through the first half. As soon as the coach saw John, he called a time out, and players and fans surrounded the young man to offer love and support.

The coach asked him if he wanted to sit on the bench with the team. “No,” John said. “I want to play.” Of course his team was excited to have him. But because John wasn't on the pre-game roster(候选名单), putting him in the game at that point would result in a technical foul(犯规)and two free throws for the opposing team.

However, John's coach agreed with that. He could see that this was the teenager's way of coping with his loss. He thought the points didn't matter. The opposing team understood the situation and told the referees to let John play and forget the technical foul. The referees argued that a rule is a rule, and the free throws would have to be taken before the game could proceed. For possibly the first time in basketball history, referees had to force a team to accept and take the technical free throws.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Missy was absolutely my best friend in the whole world. We had known each other since first grade, and we literally did everything together. We frequently visited each other’s homes, we knew each other’s families like they were our own. The interesting thing about our relationship, however the fact was that the older we got, the more our values seemed to differ. We still enjoyed a lot of the same things, but I was a bit more settled while she loved being associated with popular people and things. Although she was basically a good person, she had no problem with forcing things to go her way.

Perhaps this is why it seemed that her family actually trusted me more than they trusted her. So, on the day when Missy showed up at my house with a huge dent (凹痕) in her father’s car, I knew that we were in for a troublesome time.

She had banged the car into a tree while out that day, and she knew her father was going to have an explanation. So she stopped by my house in order to make up a story that would lessen her father’s rage. Missy decided to tell him that while in a parking lot, someone must have backed into the car and dented it. Looking at the dent with some crashed leaves and bark still sticking there, I attempted to perish (打消) her thought. “I don’t think your father will buy it.” “ Don’t worry,” she insisted,“even if my dad doesn’t trust me, he’ll trust you.” My role was to confirm for her. Now keep in mind that I had strong objections to lying and I wanted absolutely nothing to do with the situation. I loved her parents just like my own, and I did not want to be a party to this lie that Missy was creating. Nevertheless, after much request and a general questioning of my loyalty to our friendship, I decided that the least I could do was to act as a silent witness. That way, I wasn’t actually lying; I just wasn’t telling the full truth.

On February 21, 2018, the news brought Christine Cheers to her knees: “There’s been an accident.”

Her son, 32-year-old Navy flight surgeon James Mazzuchelli, had been injured in a helicopter training mission.

Machines were keeping James alive when Christine arrived at the hospital. The doctors told Christine that what she was seeing was likely his future——that her scuba diving, world-traveling, overachiever of a son was never going to wake up. He would never breathe on his own. He would never smile at her again.

It was time for Christine to honor the spirit of a man who had switched his major from commerce engineering to premed (医学预科) because he wanted to help people. It was time to make her very worst day some stranger’s best one. Christine instructed the hospital to begin the organ donation process.

Mike Cohen was just 18 when he’d been diagnosed (诊断) with a serious cancer in 2004. Doctors warned him that the treatment could cause lasting damage to his heart. At the time, surviving cancer seemed like the more pressing concern. He took his treatment seriously, doing the radiation and chemo(化疗). The risk had paid off — two years after his diagnosis, he was cancer-free. But six years later, his heart was beginning to fail. He would need a new one. He had to hope he survived waiting for a new heart.

Fortunately, on February 24, the hospital said they’d found him a heart. The next morning, Mike woke up in a hospital bed with a new heart beating in his chest.

After two weeks, he was sent home with instructions to report to recovery center, where he was limited for the first few days to slow walking. Across the room he spied a stationary (固定的) bike. And two weeks later, with his doctor’s OK, he threw a leg over and began to ride the bike.

12-year-old Adele was from a poor family. Her parents struggled to make a living, so she still felt lucky they sent her to school.

One day, on her way home, Adele slowed down after hearing beautiful sounds from the corner of the street. “Wow! It’s lovely!” she said as she went closer to a small art school. She struggled to peep (偷看) in and saw that it was a piano. For some reason, her eyes were filled with tears. She wished to play the instrument, but her parents couldn’t afford to send her there.

Adele returned home with a heavy heart and couldn’t wait to pass by the art school again. She even pretended to press piano keys on the wall near her bed just like she was playing them for real. Seeing her do this, her parents were hurt but ignored it, because she was wishing for something beyond their means (钱财).

The following afternoon, after class, Adele silently went to the place she had stood the previous day. Almost one hour later she walked away unwillingly. Her wish to play the piano grew stronger.

Then as she crossed the street, she heard beautiful sound on the piano she’d never heard before. Curiously, she followed the sound and soon reached the doorstep of an old house. The door was open, so she invited herself into the house. “Hello… Is anybody in there?” she shouted.

The music stopped at once. An elderly woman stood there, smiling. Her wrinkled skin and gray hair showed her aged beauty. “Come here, sweetheart! How can I help you?” she asked Adele. The girl was scared, but she approached the woman and after seeing her warm smile. “I’m Adele, and I was walking by your house when I heard someone playing the piano… It’s so beautiful!” she said.
