My family had only recently moved into a new neighborhood. All of my neighbors have been very friendly and helpful since we moved in.
However, Mrs Davis, an elderly lady living in the last house on the other side of the road, escaped associating with us, or anyone else. When I asked around the neighborhood why, they warned me not to go after her because they thought she was insane (精神失常的) and preferred staying alone after losing her husband and only daughter in an aircraft crash. After that, she stayed isolated (孤立的) from all the neighbors, refusing all the care and help.
I often saw her on the streets during the evening, but she was always by herself. She appeared weak and I always wanted to help her, but after hearing what my neighbors had said about her, I wasn’t sure whether I should.
One day, when I was on my way to the supermarket, our paths crossed. I was walking past her and overheard her singing a tune. It immediately drew my attention because my parents used to sing the same song with me. I began to sing along with her, and she smiled at me for the first time. But when I smiled back, she quickly hurried her pace and went home.
She seemed very different to me that day. I refused to trust my neighbors’ claims that she had cut herself off from the rest of society because she was insane, so the next day, I knocked on her door. Mrs Davis was home, and instead of letting me in, she just looked at me silently through the window. I noticed her staring at me and was about to walk to the window when she quickly closed the curtains.
The next day, I revisited her house. “Hello, I brought you something,” I called out to her. “It’s the record of the music you were singing yesterday.”

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________In the vibrant summer following their high school graduation, best friends Sally and Jasmine decided to celebrate the beginning of their new chapter with a surfing holiday on the beaches of Hawaii. Sally, known for her boldness and bravery on the waves, and Jasmine, the cautious planner, found themselves in the paradise of surfers, ready to ride the endless summer.
Their Hawaiian adventure began under crystal blue skies, with the sun casting a golden glow over their ambitions. Jasmine had thoroughly planned their days to include both surfing lessons and ample downtime to soak in the island’s tranquility (宁静). Sally, however, was drawn to the whispers of challenge and conquest that the northern beaches promised. Known for their untamed (无法驾驭的) waves and the legends of surfers who dared to dance upon them, these waters attracted Sally constantly.
Despite Jasmine’s caution, particularly about the rumors of shark sightings, Sally’s desire only grew. She argued that risk was an integral part of surfing, a test on one’s respect and understanding of the ocean’s power. Jasmine’s warnings fell on deaf ears as Sally, drive n by a mixture of youthful invincibility (不可战胜)and a deep-seated need to prove herself, decided to take on the northern waves alone.
The day Sally chose for her adventure began with a seemingly calm. The ocean looked welcoming, its surface broken only by the gentle roll of waves. Two safeguards were watching surfers riding waves in the sea nearby. Not a trace of danger or sharks could be found. Jasmine watched with a mixture of awe and anxiety as Sally paddled(划桨)out, her figure gradually becoming a small dot against the vastness of the sea.
As hours passed, the sky’s clear blue deepened to a dark grey, and the ocean began to reveal its true nature. Waves, once calm, grew in size and intensity, challenging Sally’s skill and determination. She rode them with grace, each successful return fueling her confidence. But nature cares little for human bravery.

8 . Problem-solving
Solving problems draws on two types of intelligence: crystal and fluid. Crystal intelligence involves using stored knowledge to answer questions of fact (e.g. what is the speed of light?), which relies on our ability to learn and remember information.
Fluid intelligence involves solving more creative problems, such as how to get a lion, a goat and a cabbage over a river in a single-passenger boat.
Complex problems, on the other hand, require a different approach, because the number of things you need to know and handle is greater than your consciousness brain can cope with.
The reason is that focusing attention on sequential computation, which is done by the brain’s left side, closes down areas of the right side that are concerned with taking a wider view.
A.A chess move, for example, can lead to billions of outcomes. |
B.Intense attention locks both sides of the brain into a particular pattern of activity. |
C.This kind of intelligence has proven more difficult to understand. |
D.Master players, by contrast, use their right side as well as their left. |
E.As well as looking at problem from multiple angles, brilliant problem-solving involves dismissing bad options quickly. |
F.We tend to work out simple problems—those involving just a few factors—methodically. |
Hudson had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. This was more than the usual excitement about end-of-year trips. It was the eighth grade class trip! And it was the best field trip that middle school had to offer.
They got to go to Six Flags Great America, home to more rollercoasters and games than anyplace north of Florida. They got to wander around the park by themselves, free to do as they pleased for an entire school day.
And now, finally, they were at Six Flags Great America. Hudson, with his best friend, Davion, and other classmates were waiting in line for the Twisted Twister. From the very beginning, the Twisted Twister lived up to its name. The black coaster tracks corkscrewed (螺旋式转动) almost immediately. Then, the riders in the yellow cars were given a moment to catch their breath as they were carried slowly to the top of a hill. But the relief didn’t last long. As soon as the rollercoaster cars were over the peak, the track twisted again. And again and again and again.
“I’ve heard that it turns so much that, by the time you get to the end, you’ve gone 1, 080 degrees around. That’s like four full circles!” Davion said with a smile. “It’s amazing! There’s a zero-G roll and a twelve-story drop!” he continued, excitedly sharing information about the coaster.
Hudson did not agree. He personally felt that the Twisted Twister was terrifyingly huge, and absolutely the scariest rollercoaster he had ever seen. But Hudson wasn’t about to mention his fear to his friend. This was the eighth grade trip!
At this moment, the group in front of them got off. Hudson could hear them screaming, but he couldn’t tell if the screams were because of delight or fear. Now, it was their turn! Their car pulled up and the barriers glided(滑过) smoothly up. Other classmates rushed in. Hudson, on the other hand, felt his legs lock up. And he knew, suddenly, that he could not do it. He was too afraid.

Sometimes you may feel like privacy, as a concept, has disappeared from the world.
They’re not—yet. But they are engaged in something called “datamining”. This is the process of collecting enormous amounts of unknown data from your every connected activity and then analyzing that data to fill your life with advertisements and other influences. Datamining gives away your privacy. You may find it quite impossible to avoid.
Check settings carefully.
When you install(安装) an app on your device, you probably click through a series of permissions, But an app may require many unnecessary permissions. You may doubt whether a game really needs access to your microphone, location, and camera.
Social media is very obviously a landfill when it comes to privacy. If your main goal on social media is to connect with friends or colleagues, restrict the reach of your posts to just those folks. And don’t expose your travel plans, spending habits, or product reviews out into the universe.
Remember to log out.
A.Be “boring” on social media. |
B.Mind your comments on social media. |
C.But you can minimize your exposure to it. |
D.Advertisers certainly seem to know everything about you. |
E.You should assume it is more of a data-mining app than anything else. |
F.Upon logging into platforms like Google, your activities are monitored. |
G.Online platforms have some hidden traps in which you will be cheated often. |
