The year 2013 marked a turning point in my life. In June, my husband was offered a new Job in Ghana. Feeling that I had hit a career bottleneck as a photographer and copywriter (广告文字撰写人), I, without any hesitation, made the decision to relocate with him.

While my husband engaged in work, my visa didn’t grant me the same privilege. But that’s okay. I didn’t know what to do anyway. I was left isolated, homesick and lacking purpose. Our new home was a bungalow near a river that cut across expansive grasslands. With few people around our home, I turned to nature, which had been a fondness of mine since childhood. Every day, I would take my camera and wander around, photographing aimlessly.

It wasn’t long before September arrived, bringing the full flow of the rainy season. After one particularly bad thunderstorm, I found a finch (雀) — a poor little thing barely a month old with one wing broken — on the ground. Evidently, he had been abandoned by his flock, his nest blown from a tree. The sight was heartbreaking. He was the size of my lite finger. His eyes were tightly shut and he was shuddering, too young to survive alone. I somehow felt a connection with it. Immediately I scooped him up and cautiously placed him in a cardboard box with towels, mimicking a nest, and stayed up all night researching how to care for him.

The next day, he seemed to regain some energy. He woke with his mouth open, though still too weak to let out a call. I fed him some food and chirped (叽喳) at him. To my amusement, he chirped back and even climbed into my hand. I affectionately gazed at this adorable creature, who was now boldly pecking (啄) my fingers now and then. A surge of warmth ran through me. Tenderly stroking his feathers, I chirped a lullaby, singing him to sleep. Gradually, his eyes drooped and he drifted off. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the scene — as far as he was concerned, I was his mother.

Para 1. “I will take care of you.” I murmured, making my promise to him.

Para 2. At that moment I realized that as I dedicated myself to the finch’s care, something within me changed.

One sunny day in summer, two girls named Gracy and Emma were walking to their homes after school. They were talking about the special celebration activities that were going to take place the next day at their school. They both needed something new to wear for the activity, but they had failed to save enough money to buy anything for that purpose. Both their parents had given them only little money to buy something nice for the celebration the next day. But it surely wasn’t enough for them.

Once again they came by that store near their school and looked at the dress they wanted to buy, and Gracy suddenly saw a wallet near her feet just outside the clothing store. She picked it up and found a bit of money inside it. She turned to Emma and shouted exitedly, “Look, I found a little money in this wallet and I will use it to buy the dress I want! What a lucky day!” Emma took the wallet, opened it and found a name and an address in it.

“It is not a good habit to keep whatever we find, Gracy. Put the money back. There is a name and an address in the wallet. I think it won’t be difficult for us to find its owner. We are going to return it,” said Emma.

Gracy was disappointed and said angrily, “No way! I am not putting it back. I just can’t find the owner anyway. I can buy the dress in the store with the money.”

Emma then forced Gracy to come with her to the address and they arrived at a house. Together, the two of them came up to the door and rang the doorbell.

4 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was one of those sunny mornings when merely breathing seemed to be an event worth celebrating. I was in a particularly good mood as my mother had just given me RM400(马来西亚币)for my daily expenses during the week that she would be away with my father in China to visit her sick grandaunt. I was wondering if I survived on bread and butter the whole week, I would have RM300 to buy the latest computer games! It was certainly a great way to begin the day.

As I neared the classroom, I heard a loud noise coming from it and quickly rushed in. My classmates were gathered around Tommy’s table as he searched through some personal items. Tommy had always been a popular boy in class. Not only was he bright and well-mannered, but he also came from a wealthy family that provided him with all he could ask for.

My classmates told me that Tommy had lost the money that he had brought as a donation to the welfare home that we were supposed to visit that afternoon. Understanding the situation, I suggested that we organize a search around the classroom and inform the class teacher as soon as possible. In no time, Miss Soh rushed to the classroom. She decided to run a search through everyone’s bag. We quickly stood by our tables and emptied the contents of our bags onto the table. When it came to my turn, I took out all my possessions. As Miss Soh took out the RM400 from my wallet, the class fell into a shock.

Up till then, I had no idea that the amount lost was exactly RM400. Everyone stared at me in horror. Miss Soh was pleased that her efforts had borne fruit. In a loud voice, she demanded to know where the money had come from. I told her the truth, but she appeared not to have heard anything that I had said. She claimed loudly that I was the thief, because my family was poor and could not possibly afford to give me RM400.

“Nadia, aji,”Muy called.

Come here, Nadia translated in her head. She followed the sound of her grandmother’s voice to the kitchen.

Muy fired off a set of instructions in Arabic. Nadia caught the words for oil and sugar. “Let me guess,” Nadia said. “You want me to buy groceries?”

Muy smiled. “Yes. Will you use your Arabic?” Nadia sighed. “You know I don’t speak Arabic.”

“Try.”

“I talk like a baby.”

Nadia had come to Morocco every year for as long as she could remember. Her father’s whole family lived here in a small seaside town. She could understand most of what her relatives said, but every time she opened her mouth, her tongue stuck on the words. “Try,” her father would say. “You won’t learn unless you try.” But Nadia didn’t want to try. It was too frustrating(令人沮丧的).

The old town wasn’t big, but it was confusing. The narrow streets twisted into each other like snakes. Nadia loved how kids could move freely here, playing outside or running merrily until dark. The adults watched out for all children, her father said, not just their own.

Nadia weaved past blue doorways, whitewashed walls, and tiny shops until she spotted one that looked familiar. She had been here before with her father, she remembered. Behind the counter stood a boy a few years older than Nadia.

Nadia’s palms started to sweat. She opened her mouth but failed to utter a word. Then she just pointed to the oil and sugar. The boy took the items down from the shelf.

As she paid, the boy asked in Arabic, “Are you Moroccan?”

“My father…,” she began.

He nodded and switched to English, “Half and half. How come you don’t speak Arabic?”

Here we go again. She shrugged(耸肩) and backed out of the shop, cheeks burning. She came to the end of a street where it connected with several others. She should be getting home. But which way to go? She turned right, but the street dead-ended in a courtyard.
